Maokai's ultimate just feels awful to use.

Not really here to talk about balance at all actually (although as far as I know Maokai is underperforming in every role except for Support with a cheeky Zyra build...SIGH).

I have always been extremely torn when it comes to updates, because while some pay off, others....Don't. Galio is an example about a rework that paid off, because you took the core concept and pretty much reworked it into a new Champion. Maokai in the other hand, proved to be a tad of a strong pick so you kind of tried to rework him but it didn't really come out as well as expected.

Maokai's Ultimate is just...So slow and weird, I remember going all "Let's engage with my R", cast it and begin running alongside it...Waiting for the roots' speed to ramp up, I actually am not sure if the speed ramps up, because it really should. Compare that, again, to Galio's ultimate, it's slow, it gives enemies' time to react but it still feels impactul, you get a bang for your Ultimate as feedback.

I don't know, it's just weird, and I'm not thrilled about the ol' tree being shoehorned into a cheeky AP build in bot lane, hopefully the rumors about the secondary rework to fix him up go through.

His R is not an engage tool. It is a flanking and anti engage tool.

Let's engage with my R

that's exactly what his Ult isn't supposed to be

I think his ult is actually great. It just takes some practice to get used to since it's very different than anything else in the game. It's absolutely amazing for zoning, disengage, and running down the enemy team.
