Riot, your game is in dire need of a specialized training mode.

I don't mean like the barebones starter training you have, I mean something more like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiLZ28RJe18

Customized, specialized training sessions for X aspect of the game, be it general training. (Complete X minion waves without missing a single CS, then up the difficulty by adding bots harrasing you and so on) or dedicated to X Champion (Successfully land a Rumble's Equalizer on the 3 enemy Champions running away), and so on.

I mean, even in your most recent Champion spotlights you can see that you can setup different scenarios when you are showcasing their abilities, you just need to actually put effort in it, because let's be real, the more time LoL has, the steeper the learning curve becomes, and while it isn't a big deal for old timers, newcomers might have a hard time adapting, also that kind of "training missions" would help every one of us to hone our abilities, and you can throw incentives for completing/grinding them and whatnot.

I suppose it'd be a good idea to put the sample list in the main post, so here it goes.

Generic training missions

  • Minion - Complete X minion waves without missing a single minion.

  • Minion - Freeze the minion wave.

  • Minion - Make your wave push the enemy one by killing off X number of enemy minions.

  • Turrets - Draw and drop turrest aggro, your allied bot will back off from the turret's range as soon as they receive a hit, the goal is that neither die.

  • Flash - learn to flash over walls.

  • Flash - learn to flash over X abilities.

  • Orbwalking - You cannot issue 2 AA's in a row without moving your Champion between commands.

  • Advanced orbwalking - Learn to kite a meele Champion.

Champion-specific training missions

  • Rumble - Launch an equalizer over the 3 enemy champions when they are aligned.

  • Zed - Use your Ultimate and abilities on the enemy ADC and burst it down, then return to safety before the enemy team kills you.

  • Nami - Land the godamn bubbles.

Team-oriented missions

  • Teamfighting - Wait for the allied bots to be in position and have their cooldowns recovered before engaging with Malphite Ult.

  • Splitpushing - Using the three available wards in your inventory, set up a vision field so you can splitpush while your allied team holds the enemy, make sure to know when to flee so you aren't caught.

  • Turret defense - Use your abilities and poking potential to thin down the enemy minions and weaken the enemy until they are forced to retreat before your tower falls.

  • Peeling - Use your stuns to save your carry from otherwise inevitable death from Zed's ult.

And so on.

Shameless bump since unless the thread is complaining about Riven or something, it won't get too many answers. To give it some susbtance, a quick overview of what it could contain.

proletarians1 votes

Why not complain about Riven, Vayne, Zed and Lee while promote this idea?

I don't see the harm in doing both in one thread.

I've been secretly begging for Riot to add a damn tutorial/training mode ever since I started playing. MOBA tutorials are like this: #1: Hit the minion until it dies. #2: Hide behind YOUR minions. #3: Hit the enemy laner when you aren't busy farming. #4: Kill them when they're low. #5: You're ready for PvP with absolutely fuck-all knowledge about what you're doing, building, or who you're playing! HAVE FUN AND DON'T FEED!

Here's how a MOBA tutorial SHOULD be: Lesson 1: Farming. Teaches you how to farm under different circumstances (getting harassed, under a turret, being ganked, etc). Lesson 2: Runes. Teaches you what runes do and what a standard Tier 3 page looks like. The game gives you the materials needed to make the rune pages immediately with no "Tier-Level Restriction" or IP cost. (AD: 3x AD Quints, 9x AD Reds, 9x Armor Seals, 9x MR Glyphs) (AP: 3x AP Quints, 9x Magic Pen Reds, 9x Armor Seals, 9x MR Glyphs) Lesson 3: Killing Enemies. Teaches you insight on different playstyles, champions that fit into those playstyles (Gnar fits into aggressive harass-into-kill, Garen fits into farm-a-lot, etc) turret-diving, being turret-dove, etc. Lesson 3.5: Using Summoner Spells. Teaches you how to use your Summoners correctly and when it can be considered a good time to use them (Flash-auto an enemy to finish them off, etc). Lesson 4: Map awareness. Teaches you to be actively aware of your laner (if you're laning), to be aware of placed wards, and to deal with getting ganked. Lesson 5: Counter-Jungling. Teaches you what to do in the cases that you DO get counter-jungled. (Say the enemy has a Shaco. He cleared his red, went to your blue and stole it. What you almost ALWAYS do is go to HIS blue and take it.)

The list goes on until you know pretty much how to play the essential parts of the game and some strategies for the game.

The tutorial should be in-depth and teach you the basic and medium-depth mechanics while not overwhelming you. I had to discover pretty much everything besides pressing Q-W-E-R and right-clicking on my own, which is not good design.

Jungling needs its own lesson before counterjungling, given that it's probably the role with the highest skill floor.

Yeah, you can go from stomping co-op to getting raged at in Normals in no time flat. There isn't much in between. The only thing close to a middle ground is the fact that the rage in ARAM is a little more tame and infrequent.

Training would be a pretty labor-intensive project, but there's zero evidence that they're even working on it, not even the occasional, "hey, we're working on this and we hope you'll like it, but it's got a long way to go. Peace, guys." I think back in S3 or something and said, "hey, the game is evolving, what can you do? And we can't enforce the meta, that would be wrong." Then they threw up their hands and put working tutorials and training modes into The Pit of Forgetting along with scaling hybrid itemization and called it a day.

As someone who has spent just over 2 seasons failing to learn how to jungle this would be extremely helpful.

This is a great idea. Not a lot of people know how to play very well anymore. It is either only focus cs and get harrassed out of lane, or it is harrass the heck out of the opponent, but get no cs.

Also, I would love to have this, because I could work on my own skills. I think it is a wonderful idea.

Sorry I didn't catch this before I posted mine, Postal. I love it.

Murlainn1 votes

Completely agree. A friend of mine got me to try out HotS, and they have a few training missions that you do for gold when you first start. I just sat here thinking "why is there not something more in-depth like this on league?" It's not quite as detailed, but it was still more in-depth than the tutorial here.

I really like the idea of champion specific training missions. I think it would really help with understanding your new champion better rather than having to play it out over the course of a dozen games.

I'm commenting to make this show up higher. Also because it kinda reminds me of a lot of games that I grew up with.

I think that these should be modified somewhat, to make them more viable for everyone, not just beginners.

CSing and manipulating minions is a skill which you can never stop manipulating, so for that one what I'd like is to have it be kind of like a space shooter style thing, where minions keep on coming either in waves or individually and you try and last-hit them best you can and the game keeps making it harder by changing resistances or your attack damage or your own minion count.

With orbwalking, have an enemy melee champion follow you around a map without any allied or enemy units and gradually increase his speed, goal is to not get hit. You can give the starting speed and specify which abilities the bot can use.

That kind of thing. While making the game more beginner friendly is always good, I've also always wanted a gamemode where I can practice certain skills more efficiently than just entering a custom game.

Oh my god Ranked would be so much more competitive instead of the bullshit it is now

As an old timer I really want this so my friends can get a little more up to speed on things. My number one issue with recommending LoL to friends is that it's hard to get into.

As a Bronze newb who only started playing League of Legends this year, this would be immensely helpful and appreciated.

I can only support this. New play experience as it is now is horrible

I think poor play by new players has become a running joke at Riot. I generally like most of the humor, but poor warding is a huge determent to lower levels of this game that relies on good teamwork to win.

p.s. +5 to the OP. We can always hope even though Riot doesn't care.

Colgate Gator1 votes

Glad to see people agree! Now to hope that someone Riot-related posts here, at least to say if it is a viable idea or not!

I agree, there should be advanced training with a specific role and champion of your choice. Practicing with beginner bots with Ashe doesn't do me much good if I want to play another ADC, there is no training for jungle or supports outside of bot matches and those tend to be plowed through for first win bonus.
