Honestly: Wtf is the point in Juggernauts?

chipndip1··6 votes·1,610 views

Somewhere between the realms of "moderately mobile, melee ranged champs that are a lil bulky do damage" and "not too mobile, super tanky melee champions that have cc" are Juggernauts: Not too mobile, pretty tanky melee (or practically melee) champions that do damage and have fairly little in the way of cc.

Seeing how these posts of mine are meant to cut the filler and really just jump right into the problem, once again, I'm doing that here. That said...literally what is the point in the Juggernaut class?

Why would I want a jug when they don't peel and don't engage? Jugs rely on their team to get them in top form. However, their primary lane is top...which is where we send our tanks and divers...basically champs that are designed to do the engaging or peeling. It's similar to asking yourself "Why would I waste my support slot on Teemo when he doesn't bring cc, healing, shielding, or buffs in the slot dedicated for that type of champion?" In the same line of thought, why use the lane we send team engage/disengage on a champ that needs help engaging or disengaging?

Why would I want a jug when damage dealers are already very easy to come by? Your mid lane and your bot lane are normally two solid places to get damage output from. If not them, you can put a hyper carry in the bot lane and build your strategy around protecting that one person for about half an hour. Where's the need in having my front line be a mid-game spiking damage source when it'd be a safer investment if he was a tank protecting or enabling my back line damage sources? It's not like jugs serve as late game powerhouses since they fall off by mid game as they start to get kited in team fights harder and harder. So we just use the top lane slot, where we would have some form of tanky engage or protection for others, on a champion that accomplishes neither of these primary objectives, but also doesn't serve as a strong carry option like a skirmisher possibly could. Why would I do this, again?

Malicious posters aside, no one REALLY wants meta jugs. Most of them just..."run at you." Yeah, that's kind of the point of the fantasy, but that's also the source of the problem. When jugs are strong, they just run down your team and force ults and sums while not dying to the crap they burn and posing as a major damage threat. So now we got this dilemma here, because most people hate the shit out of tanky champions that hurt too much and won't die, yet this is the foundation of this class of champions as a whole. Now, we don't remember that we hate this because it's been 2 years since this was a huge issue, but trust me, we hate it when someone's super tanky, yet hurts super bad, and is shoving us five miles down the lane out of pure fear of eventually getting hit confirmed by something.

However, when Jugs are weak, we have walking wastes of space that can't peel, can't engage, can't deal satisfactory damage, and pretty much Sona succeed through the failures of others Kayle. Not exactly the most appealing champs in my book. There's no real balanced state that's "just right" for a class that either feels literally insurmountable or useless and redundant in its purpose in the game.

Jugs kit designs tend to be worse than the fantasy, honestly. Way too many jug champs have DrMundo too little counter-play and Olaf just have a guy Shyvana running at Volibear 5 like a Garen barbarian. The occasional one Illaoi Urgot may come out with WAY too much counter-play. Riot doesn't really have a solid idea of what a jug kit should...well...accomplish, save for the occasional one like Olaf (and even that's just "running into the enemy team the best"). Not "thematic" wise, but rather "strategy" wise. What's the game plan of half these jug champs? Shyvanna had her mini-rework, but all Riot did was say "Go kill drag a few times"...but you can kill drag on any jungler...even Morde has a dragon-slaying gimmick which centers ANOTHER jug around that niche. Outside of that she has her now unstoppable ult, but Olaf has continuous immunity to cc while ulting. What the hell's Shyvanna even doing here!?

How about Mundo? All he does is run around throwing cleavers. He's strong when he's blatantly broken or Riot removes GW from the game, and generally lack-luster otherwise since literally most of his game play is "running around". Speaking of that, the HELL is Udyr still doing without a VGU? In terms of lacking direction in his design and lacking a general strategic niche, he's the worst offender out of all the jugs. He's just doing shit on the map. When Udyr's strong, the whole community loses its cool because he's tanky, has hard cc, has damage, runs fast as hell, and just outpaces nearly anyone while being super hard to kill. It's like "Melee Singed" going wild on the map, except he tunnels on pve even harder. Dude's whole kit is a catastrophe. And, once again, if we sit back and just remember the last time Udyr was relevant, you'd remember why we don't want him relevant again. There's no real objective to the guy...he just does shit. Riot wants to help the guy out, but avoiding what he used to be makes it hard to make him something at all in today's time.

Still, I'm seeing Riot making moves. They added tenacity to Sterak's and they're gonna add more sources of tenacity in the preseason. I'm thinking maybe Juggernauts will be set up as the class that breaks through massive cc chains and THEN runs teams down. It'd mean that you could pick a tank to up your team's overall cc, or you could pick a Juggernaut and be more resilient to cc with your front-liner that tears through tanks rather well. That...actually sounds decent, and playing this out in this manner isn't the worst...assuming they're doing that. However, right now, as far as I see, I can't see the strategic reasoning behind Juggernauts being in the game. I think Riot's gotta do way better in fleshing that out in season 8, otherwise that's quite a few useless champs we're gonna have sitting around for a minute.

Because as much as League is a strategy game at its core, it's a fighting game at its outer levels. Having champions that fill strategic niches such as range, waveclear, and zone control have equally as much say as combat classes. I actually agree with you to a certain level, where my issue is Assassins as a combat class. The fact of the matter is as long as champions need to fight each other in this game, niches tailored specifically for combat such as Juggernauts or Assassins will exist.

Why would I want a jug when they don't peel and don't engage?

To fight.

It's like asking why Fiora is a primary Top Laner despite the fact that she can't start teamfights and she can't really defend allies any better than Darius can (hell, at least Darius has a pull). Besides that, your assertion that Top Lane is where we send our tanks is (at least statistically atm) wrong, that's the Jungle's niche right now. If anything, ignoring SInged due to how odd and unique he is, the first actual Tank you'll find according to this tier list is Sion in Diamond tier, sitting next to 8 carry type Top Laners.

This is just a bad question to ask quite frankly. Supports don't always need to be healbots, mid laners don't always need to be artillery mages. Jungle doesn't always need to be Lee Sin. Top doesn't always have to be tanks. Hell, ADC doesn't always has to be a Marksman sometimes. You're asserting something for no reason other than your preloaded misconceptions about how roles work.

Why would I want a jug when damage dealers are already very easy to come by?

Because maybe instead of a hyper carry bot, I wanted Sivir or Ashe for their amazing waveclear or permaslows respectively, or either of their potentially game changing ultimates.

Because maybe instead of Azir or Cassiopeia powering through Mid Lane, I want TF or or Galio for huge map plays and opening new options for my team.

Because maybe the Jungle's current flavor of the month are Tanks

This is like asking why the fuck Vel'Koz exists when we already have artillery/combo mage hybrids or why Braum exists when we can send Tanks Top Jungle. This is a bad question to ask.

Malicious posters aside, no one REALLY wants meta jugs.

When Juggernauts are meta...they're not that overwhelming.

The whole design of a Juggernaut puts flaws into them. The only way a Juggernaut is really overbearing is if they have no flaws, which would be like making any class unflawed and isn't a Juggernaut problem, or you're stupid enough to play into their strengths. There's a reason why the amount of Illaoi pentakill videos dropped off like a rock about a month after her release. Or you know, the magical word known as CoUnTeRpLaY. Except for like, Garen, every Juggernaut has huge and glaring ways for anybody to combat them. And in Garen's case it's the inverse issue of his niche being strong but his general strength being weaker, which is an easy balance case.

Once again you're just asserting without actual substance.

Jugs kit designs tend to be worse than the fantasy, honestly

And you chose Olaf, Shyvana, Mundo, and Volibear because they're outdated and prove your point the most right? I've already mentioned Garen but come on, at least pretend you're not biased for just a moment here.

Look, there are points to make about the niches Juggernauts cover. You are not covering any of those points. All you're doing right now is ranting and asserting.

Because as much as League is a strategy game at its core, it's a fighting game at its outer levels.

Stop right there.

League's 3 parts: Strategy, team-based objectives, and combat. If you're trying to look at this game through the lens of a 1v1 fighter, depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you're gonna have a bad time.

That's fine, but if there's no strategic reason to pick an assassin or a jug, then they're objectively inferior choices as a class of champions.

To fight.

Anyone fights. Why pick Charizard when the enemy has a Blastoise? "To use attacks"? No, you just don't pick Charizard.

Honestly, I was gonna make one of these posts for skirmishers later, but I'm focusing on jugs now so that's why we aren't discussing Fiora.

However, with that said, you can pick a skirmisher like GP or Fiora to scale into strong side lane pressure while your other teammates push down other objectives, forcing the hand of the enemy team when it comes to dealing with you. Jugs can objectively try this, too, but they fall off after mid game, so skirmishers are better at doing this, so why use a jug for it?

This is just a bad question to ask quite frankly. Supports don't always need to be healbots, mid laners don't always need to be artillery mages. Jungle doesn't always need to be Lee Sin. Top doesn't always have to be tanks. Hell, ADC doesn't always has to be a Marksman sometimes. You're asserting something for no reason other than your preloaded misconceptions about how roles work.

  • Supports don't need to be shield bots. I said they need cc, heals, shields, or buffs. If a support could get by without ANY of these, support Kayle would still be viable...and even she brings a heal and two types of buffs...one being blatant invincibility.

  • Artillery mages are quite rare. Game only has like 4 or so, and two of them are Lux and Xerath...so yeah...you're right I guess...

  • Lee Sin still fills in the main point of the jungler in a well-made team comp, which is usually a strong engage option that's good (or "good enough") through the early and mid game. Especially true when your top laner wants to play a carry top laner.

  • ADC is gonna be a marksman unless you're goofing off in a norm or it's Morde bot lane, but I don't play in EUNE so I'm fine.

I'm asserting what I am because there's the objective freedom to pick a champ...and then there's the strategic reasoning as to why I'd pick a champ. I can't make someone not pick Darius, but I can say before I'm in a match "Why WOULD I want a Darius on my team?". Regardless of your reasoning when you pick a jug champ while your team quietly plays along and sees if they win, I can still critique the reasoning as to why that's a strategically viable move in your draft phase.

Also, all those .9% play rates in your link can get on out of here.

Because maybe instead of a hyper carry bot, I wanted Sivir or Ashe for their amazing waveclear or permaslows respectively, or either of their potentially game changing ultimates.

Sivir also has really high damage? Hell, any marksman is gonna have high damage as they build up items, and even if you have Ashe, you can just have a mage in the mid lane like you usually will.

Because maybe instead of Azir or Cassiopeia powering through Mid Lane, I want TF or or Galio for huge map plays and opening new options for my team.

TF can also deal good damage in a game. Galio's being tooled...to deal more damage. Like I don't get it...

Because maybe the Jungle's current flavor of the month are Tanks

And?

This is like asking why the fuck Vel'Koz exists when we already have artillery/combo mage hybrids or why Braum exists when we can send Tanks Top Jungle. This is a bad question to ask.

Vel is like the best artillery mage you can pick for team fighting and game scaling since he can melt whole teams with his passive. Pretty bad analogy.

When Juggernauts are meta...they're not that overwhelming.

Yes they are and I'll never forget 2015. Jugs have generally been kept down because they're oppressive when they get good.

And you chose Olaf, Shyvana, Mundo, and Volibear because they're outdated and prove your point the most right? I've already mentioned Garen but come on, at least pretend you're not biased for just a moment here.

I referenced them for the "They run at you" part because they run at you. I referenced Illaoi and Urgot for the "too much counter-play against themselves" part because...well, they have (or had) too much counter-play against themselves.

Look, there are points to make about the niches Juggernauts cover. You are not covering any of those points. All you're doing right now is ranting and asserting.

My last paragraph jumped off a cliff I guess.

Look, we can keep arguing, or you can notice you still haven't actually provided good reasons to question the point of Juggernauts past "well look at these now unrelated examples! Therefore Juggernauts are bad".

"Why would I want a jug when they don't peel and don't engage?" is a bad question compared to, say "What strategic niche does Juggernaut fill?" The latter question both provides you a reason to justify whatever niche Juggernauts have while also prepping a real counterargument to that niche. That's a faaaaaar more targeted and better way than the current "Well look at these Juggernauts doing the job Tanks are supposed to do, Juggs must be worthless"

"Why would I want a jug when damage dealers are already very easy to come by?" vs "What do Juggernauts offer that other damage dealers don't". The latter would allow you to do a case by case comparion between the strengths and weaknesses of a Juggernaut vs the strengths and weaknesses of a Marksman, which you can then turn into a discussion about how the strengths and weaknesses of a Juggernaut are not worth considering to replace a Marksman (or carry type Mage or Assassin or Skirmisher)

"Malicious posters aside, no one REALLY wants meta jugs" is once again, just an assertion with no backing. You could have started with an open ended question like "What game philosophy are Juggernauts designed around" and use that to talk about any issues between the game philosophy and the game design and why Juggernauts while okay on paper aren't great in execution. Hell, the funny thing is your next point almost goes down this route. "Jugs kit designs tend to be worse than the fantasy, honestly", but you waste this point on piss poor examples and more assertions.

I am not telling you you are wrong at a fundamental level. I AGREE WITH YOU, to at least some level. Your post however is, to put it in League terms, garbage, and you really need to reevaluate both your post and yourself. I am giving you criticism and you return with an argument. Do not fall into literally the exact same pitfall of arguing every point I make in this point too.

Also in regards to Charizard, because either of his mega evolutions are strong pokemon to have on your team in general on top of being equipped to fight Water types like Blastoise to at least some level. Seriously though this is a terrible argument if you knew anything about competitive pokemon.

I don't see where an unrelated example is in this post...

"Why would I want a jug when they don't peel and don't engage?" is a bad question compared to, say "What strategic niche does Juggernaut fill?"

I'm not obligated to mind your feelings when making a point. THE WHOLE POST is asking what strategic niche does a juggernaut currently fill in the first place, especially given that they take a composition slot that's better used by aggressive divers like Camille and J4 that threaten back liners easily or heavy tanks that protect your own team members or start off team fights without going 3 feet into a 6 foot grave.

The latter question both provides you a reason to justify whatever niche Juggernauts have while also prepping a real counterargument to that niche. That's a faaaaaar more targeted and better way than the current "Well look at these Juggernauts doing the job Tanks are supposed to do, Juggs must be worthless"

The point of this post is to point out that juggernauts are bloody redundant in the game as a general sub-class. WHAT niche?

"Why would I want a jug when damage dealers are already very easy to come by?" vs "What do Juggernauts offer that other damage dealers don't". The latter would allow you to do a case by case comparion between the strengths and weaknesses of a Juggernaut vs the strengths and weaknesses of a Marksman, which you can then turn into a discussion about how the strengths and weaknesses of a Juggernaut are not worth considering to replace a Marksman (or carry type Mage or Assassin or Skirmisher)

If the only issue you have with the post is tact, you need thicker skin. The exact same case was made either way except you want it worded in a way you won't get triggered by.

Based on the crying I regularly witness on these boards, the general notion of a tanky, high damage target running at you while you're running out of options is something most people despise. Urgot's win rate in Diamond elo on LeagueofGraphs went up to like 51% on a 4% play rate and Riot's already working on nerfing the guy. He's a bronzie stomper, but that doesn't mean most of the community digs how he wins, assuming he does. Same shit with the other jugs when they get out of hand. Hell, even I'D hate that shit...save Olaf. Olaf's aight with me, but he's an outlier case.

I do that to make sure people know what I'm responding to as I respond to a person, and I give most people the courtesy of a response (or two...or a few). If I honestly refuse to respond to someone, it's usually because I don't think they're worth responding to. A sheer lack of respect, if anything.

Also in regards to Charizard, because either of his mega evolutions are strong pokemon to have on your team in general on top of being equipped to fight Water types like Blastoise to at least some level. Seriously though this is a terrible argument if you knew anything about competitive pokemon.

I used a very baseline argument because Theory-Mon gets overly complicated when I'm making a simple example. Point is that at a baseline, simplistic level of understanding, you don't just do a thing in a strategic game to just "do a thing". There needs to be a point to it. A REAL point, not just something you carve out of nothing...that's a gimmick. Jugs are basically a class full of gimmick champs. They cheese low elo and stomp average players, but they generally don't hold up as you climb because they don't fit into functional team comps like at all. They're even worse fits than assassins are in most cases. They need people to work off of, it's hard to work off of them, the two things they "kinda" do are already done in full by champs you can easily draft, and they aren't even late game savvy picks. "Why would one bother putting up with this" is what the post is asking. Regardless of how you feel about the "wording", that doesn't change the point.

Not every Marksman is a hyper carry. Ones like Sivir and Varus and Ashe are made to deal less damage than others in exchange for bringing more utility.

If a Juggernaut is on the team, they can be the main carry, if enabled, just like an ADC can. A peeling Tank can come out of the Jungle or Support roles (Or Mid if you're Galio). A Mage can come in Mid or Support (Or 'ADC' Bot if you're Ziggs).

And a Juggernaut isn't relegated to Top lane. Some are primarily Junglers - Skarner Udyr Volibear Shyvana Olaf, so you can still put a Tank in Top.

The reason the Jungle is bias towards Tanks at the moment is gold generation; a Jungler makes less gold than his laning counterparts, and Tank items are generally cheaper than Damage items, especially pseudo-Support items like Knight's Vow.

Not every Marksman is a hyper carry. Ones like Sivir and Varus and Ashe are made to deal less damage than others in exchange for bringing more utility.

Marksmen generally do a good deal of damage, regardless of who. If you aren't a hyper carry to justify using four tanky/defensive champs and one marksman, you'd obviously have a mage in the mid lane instead of full tank Galio...and that'd thus fix that problem. Also, Sivir and Varus are strong damage dealers, even if they aren't straight up hyper-carries.

If a Juggernaut is on the team, they can be the main carry, if enabled, just like an ADC can.

Correction: They can in the same sense that Teemo can...which is the "solo queue" way, not the smart way. Sure, you can shout your catch phrase, fly into the rift, and hope you do well, but in a strategic sense, there's no reason to want to pick a Juggernaut. They get kited, they're needy, and they're selfish. What's the point?

A peeling Tank can come out of the Jungle or Support roles (Or Mid if you're Galio). A Mage can come in Mid or Support (Or 'ADC' Bot if you're Ziggs).

A peeling tank can come out of top, jg, or support. Shen still exists.

And a Juggernaut isn't relegated to Top lane. Some are primarily Junglers - Skarner Udyr Volibear Shyvana Olaf, so you can still put a Tank in Top.

Skarner isn't a jug from what I remember. Now he's classified as a diver (confusing me too, man...).

Volibear is garbage.

Udyr is either garbage or he should be garbage.

Shyvanna's a mess, too.

If I have to be honest I'm aight with Olaf in general, even if he does a lot of "running right at you".

The reason the Jungle is bias towards Tanks at the moment is gold generation; a Jungler makes less gold than his laning counterparts, and Tank items are generally cheaper than Damage items, especially pseudo-Support items like Knight's Vow.

And when it isn't it'll go back to Lee and Elise. I don't think Shyv's gonna be super "meta" anytime soon.
