Current thoughts on Azir @Meddler ?

Now that Rylai have been nerfed, and Azir got some small buff, do you think he's in a relative better spot or it's too early for talking about it? The first days after that said patch (3 days) according to lolalytics he fell on 41% winrate

The Rylai's change hit a few champs hard, with Azir, Taliyah, Viktor, Malz and Vlad being the noteworthy ones. A number of other champs don't seem to have been significantly affected (e.g. Kennen, Morde, Zyra) or are doing at first glance doing better in the new environment (e.g. Swain, Zilean).

Azir and Taliyah specifically have both been hit hard enough we're working on buffs for them at present. There's a possibility we do those in a hotfix next week, rather than waiting until 7.1 in January. That's not a definite thing yet though, just a possibility. Viktor, Malz and Vlad we'll just be watching for now to see how they do. Malz and Viktor at least were both on the strong side to begin with, so some of that drop in power's appropriate.

Will Azir get his larger changes in 2017 or is he (along with Kalista) going to be a a ChampUP project and be left on the backburner

He does feel rather awful to play after these changes though, and his performance taking a dip when only mains play him is somewhat significant.

The main problem, which I've discussed with several Mordekaiser mains, is that he feels so very awful to play now since almost any champion can outrun you and get away from you.

The 40% slow did allow him to do his Job and stick but with a mere 325 MS and low base stats sticking to an enemy and actually killing them can be problematic at times.

MilamberZ1 votes

For him i always thought that, he need some base MS back, i mean the old morde was far more fast, without being overbearing...

Malicious Metal4 votes

He even had front up burst and superior range.

Victor is definitely on the strong side even without rylai's. Malz not only needed the slow but also heavily needed the damage. And How can you be saying that kennen looks to be significantly effected then go into gutting his ult to the same degree that you gutted akali's, or was it a lie that riot learned their lesson from the failed state akali was released in from the assassin rework.

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

Kennel has been a bit op lately which is pretty different from the akali situation. Akali was changed to deal now if her damage after a short delay like all assassins were. That's why her r deals less damage now

Victor is definitely on the strong side even without rylai's.

He's at 47.7% in plat+ across all regions for 6.24. That doesn't necessarily mean he does need buffs, he has a really large player base at the moment not all of which are experienced Viktor players so that could be dragging it down a bit, but even so he's gone down by about ~3.5% win rate from 6.23. His deathray aftershock should never hit anymore unless a target is CC'd and his ult is inherently less effective as a result of the Rylai's passive changes.

Judging by Meddler's post he's either going to be buffed or left alone. Early personal opinion is that he seems fairly balanced at the moment, and if riot ends up buffing him I'd hope its nothing more than a minor ult speed buff.

isn't mordekaiser at some 44% winrate even with his mains? i heard it dropped hard

how come you don't want to address his egregious design flaws overall? I think a Shyvana -tier passover would do good to hold over until he gets a VGU in the indeterminate future

Malicious Metal14 votes

This.

His overall win rate dropped and several mains even maintain sub 50% win rates. MAINS for crying out loud.

Investing some resources to fix him until his VGU would be a great move to keep him playable until he gets his due. Hell, why is he left to rot while other somewhat flawed designs are actually kept in somewhat good spots?

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I vote they add a slow to his e. Functionally it would be like having rylais baked into his kit on the main spell he uses to get a slow. It could increase the slow% by rank.

From what I've seen he isn't too bad once he has that slow, prenerf anyway. So I think it would be an effective fix until he eventually is reworked

Big Lincoln2 votes

i would rather he have better base stats. as it is now he doesn't even build like a juggernaut despite being lumped into the group because even with that high-HP pseudo-tank build he's absurdly squishy.

he's almost always better off building damage to kill people and that's kind of contrary to the class

Malicious Metal5 votes

And unlike most Juggernauts he has no late game scaling, despite Riot wanting to cement him in this niche, as noted in the last time he was in the patch notes.

he needs good MS and Defensive scalings to scale.

Big Lincoln2 votes

i think that's also due to the fact he can't really afford to opt into penetration items like void staff (leaves him too squishy) and there's no AP equivalent of black cleaver for him to take in its stead (2014's abyssal scepter rework would have solved this)

That all kinda compounds onto his lack of mobility or ability to actually stick to anybody, on top of awful base stats, and he ends up being a carry that can't actually carry. He's just sort of a weight that needs his team to hold someone down long enough for him to be relevant. At the same time I think just adding a slow anywhere on his kit would just be a cop out.

Malicious Metal2 votes

I found decent success with Liandries. Liandries, Pen boots and Runes/Masteries put me at a disgusting 46 FLAT Pen.

The burn also helps with tanks. The build would in THEORY scale really well into later stages because of the burn component and me actually investing into some heavy hitters and defense afterwards.

But sadly abysmal base stats keeps Morde from scaling well into later stages-

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

His base stats are low because of the extra tankiness he gets from w. When he had higher base stats he was absurdly op if you guys remember. I think adding a slow to his e is more or less leaning into what works about his design. Making him absurdly powerful in melee tame with no way to get there is super unhealthy

RiotMeddler7 votes

Stats aren't everything, but last I checked (yesterday) Morde was still sitting slightly above 50% on average in top and around 49% in mid after the Rylai's change. Win rate for experienced Morde players was substantially higher.

Morde does need a full VGU. We don't believe doing partial update, like Shyv's, on champs in that state's a good approach. That scale of update still takes a noticeable amount of developer time that could be making permanent improvements (hopefully) to a champ who's close to a good state, rather than doing more temporary work on a champ who'll still have a lot of problems. Small scope updates in those contexts also have a risk of introducing a range of new problems even if they address some old ones (Morde's update last year for example).

That's not to say we won't do anything for Morde until a VGU of course. In particular if something actually puts him in a really bad spot performance wise we'd want to help him out. So far though we're not seeing any evidence the Rylai's change has done that however. As above it has hit some champs hard enough we'll potentially hotfix them rather than waiting for a normal patch. Morde doesn't seem to have been affected much overall though, possibly in part because few people with Rylai's and a weaker Rylai's slow's a more favourable environment for him.

Big Lincoln9 votes

can you at least bump him up to high priority? I feel like the plain outdated-ness of his kit should warrant him being an immediate concern after Galio and (presumably?) Urgot.

Evelynn at least functions pretty nicely as a champion right now; Mordekaiser's playrate dived so hard his average winrate is kept up by the people who are diehard dedicated to him

i've hated playing him ever since the juggernaut update and I'm very impatient for an update that makes him more palatable

Decrit4 votes

i honestly think that eve is far, far worse. she barely exists thematically as a champion and has even more putdated mechanics, with her thing ( camou%%%e ) being taken by others. I like Morde, but without doubt eve needs much much more.

VexingRaven2 votes

Serious question, why do you guys tie visual updates with gameplay updates?

SkyblazeHydraX32 votes

Not a Rioter, but someone who's seen the question answered before:

Efficiency. It lets them put out more satisfying work at a more efficient pace if they put the visual updates together with gameplay updates. Otherwise it just ends up... odd, and you have cases like Kassadin or Alistar, who have modern models and effects but relatively outdated (and arguably problematic) kits and very old and limited voice overs.

If you buff Azir, spike the Q slow a tiny bit. All he needs.

JayyDubb691 votes

Honestly I think a health raise so he can actually use his E. Q slow is still plenty effective, though i guess if we are talking about the nerf of item 3116 the q slow would be most appropriate.

Whatever you decide to do with a Morde VGU, i beg you, PLEASE keep intact the sound effect on the 3rd Q. That thing is the most satisfying SFX I've ever experienced in a videogame.

Reverting his rework so he's actually fun to play again, rather than a Darius clone with no burst and passive laning

I don't see any mention of Rumble. Since he always rushes a Rylai first, did the changes buff or nerf him?

Xonra6 votes

Riot are under the (delusional) opinion that it is perfectly fine now since they are lowering the cost ofitem 3151 by like 100 gold and now that item 3116 is cheaper, it will not only NOT be bad but it should make him spike faster lol

I would say it by no means in any land buffed him, but I wouldn't call it a huge nerf either. As someone who plays a lot of Rumble, I would say at the worst it frees up a slot to put into something else, but it does hurt (And you feel it) having this crappy version of item 3116.

Unlike Morde however, Rumble can still do just fine without it.

Erdamon1 votes

No, I'm sorry but there's no other way of saying it than "You're pretty freaking clueless about Rumble"

Ever since Liandry's was introduced into the game there was no point to rush Rylai's, but it was still a viable option because of the +500 hp and +80 ap. Later on as more changes have come, more items were introduced (especially in 6.9 with the Protobelt), Rumble was given more options and simply didn't need Rylai to work, but again, it was an option. Now with the stats reduced across the board it's just worthless on him, but it's not like he needed it in the first place.

ACENOX6 votes

Morde is literally unplayable right now no joke

at least as a main that started to play him since 1 month it's really hard to play without rylai

if you were to look at him just a base ms+hp/lvl buff would be fine to make him working

AlienPrimate1 votes

I have said this a few times but haven't gotten anyone else's opinion on it. Just make his W targetable on enemies and slow them from moving away from Morde while it is active like Shen's Q.

ACENOX2 votes

that doesn't help him

harvest of sorrow is a very strong spell to morde mostly because he can heal someone else and himself for 400 hp play morde some times and you will see how it's extremely important.

and then you're going to tell me "meh you have to choose between a slow or a heal on ally" No, i don't want to choose between a slow and a heal i want in general 340 ms to not lose time going back to lane, i want a good base hp because having 1700 hp is the worst thing riot ever did to morde for no reasons

he lost 300 hp with sota, 100 hp with rylai, and he has a bad base hp, why?

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I think it would make more sense for his e to slow enemies plus it would be easier to change without making a lot of new balance issues

HazyCloud73 votes

Surprising that was so much talk of Mordekaiser no longer being viable if riot were to hit Rylai's slow hard & mages only being abusers that don't need Rylai's as an option for them at all, and as it turns out the champions that were actually hit hard happen to be 5 mages.

Still think it would be reasonable to give him the frequently requested base ms buff though, 325 ms as a melee champion with no mobility seems rather slow now that Rylai's only applies a 20% slow.

MilamberZ1 votes

Thank you for the fast and clear answer! As already suggested in this board (or even us azir mains on reddit), do you think it would be healthier to move the Q poke damage and shift it in the W ? (whatever the form, a debuff activated by hit with Q followed to W, or pure damage access) and make the Q more like a tool for reposition our soldiers?

Jinzo Torrance1 votes

Please don't touch Viktor and Malzahar, they are fine as it is. Just revert Malzahar 50 attack range nerf or Viktor removal of his ult moving at maximum speed if he was returning to him, if you feel they need some tweaks.

Don't overbuff them.

I played him twice in my promos and won both of them but by god was it a hassle. Patch 6.23 was a lot easier and actually made me feel impactful.

Now I have to rely on Ghost, Flash, Srs, Rylais AND Protobelt at times to even have the slightest chance at sticking to my opponents.

Can we actually get a good buff to Taliyah? Her Q is fine. Maybe look at her E and W and put some further thought and work into making those abilities more relevant. Afterall, those were the abilities that you needed the slow for.

Mordekaiser just dropped even further to a 43.4% winrate with a 0.4% pickrate. This is Abysmal Mordekaiser had a 1.5% pickrate and a 49% winrate before the nerf. Seeing it stated that morde has not been significatly affected by the change just makes me depressed.

Also, if you go to charts in Lolking and look at lowest playrate and at lowest winrate champions mordekaiser will show up on both.

What about Karma then? Is she getting a partial update or a VGU? You cannot seem to do anything but a numbers buff for 4 years now, that you nerf just a few months later. Her kit needs work and Karma suffers more from a terrible visual update and bad work. It's about time you guys seriously start working on her, Morde, and Shen. Of the three Morde is the worst . . . . but Karma has been waiting forever for ANY positive work to be done on her to make her more unique and fix problems with her kit. Please address it in 2017 in a partial update like Shyvanna's at least. Even if you do not tackle all of her problems and think the visual update was a success, work on making her kit more original and less reliant on a numbers buff and buying items to increase her shields. Why does she go from being an oppressive mage the beginning of the game, to a champion that spams E+R to be useful in a match? It's not fun and it is poor champion design to say she is not a shield bot.

TY.
