Galio and the Athene's Unholy Grail Nerf

Galio and Athene's go very well together. Coupled with his passive and his fairly high mana costs, Athene's is pretty much a staple item. I forget which patch it was but Athene's was nerfed in regards to both magic resist and mana regen per 5 a while back. Just curious, did Galio get any compensation for this?

He was hardly ever used before and now probably even less so. The nerfs for Athene's weren't unwarranted; almost every popular AP mid laner bought it and that didn't really promote item build diversity. But I believe Galio is extremely reliant on Athene's and nerfing it was a direct (but probably not intentional) nerf to Galio. Much like how Riot tweaked ratios on certain champs that were dependant on Lich Bane (Fizz & Twisted Fate) after the Lich Bane rework (nerf), I wanted to bring awareness for the same issue with Galio and Athene's.

Thanks for reading I would like to read your feedback (like maybe I missed the patch notes with Galio getting tweaked or something).

TL;DR Athene's got nerfed a while back and Galio, who's already struggling in the meta, was indirectly nerfed substantially. Love for the guardian?

Athene's is still an amazing core item for him, and it hasn't impacted his performance in his niche enough to be concerned about. Lich bane was a major item change, Athene's was very small.

He doesn't see huge amounts of play because he's a very niche pick. He's fantastic against primarily AP/caster teams, and groups people up very well in AoE comps. Other than that, his lack of initiation and hard CC makes him a subpar choice to other tanks. It's not a bad thing, it just means he has a limited place. It wouldn't be good to homogenize him to make him more popular.

Why does Holy grail need to be nerfed again? Oh, because "it goes well with Galio"? Who ever said that was a problem?
