Support Discussion

Hello summoners, I have a few questions about the madlife ways. First off, what supports should I play low elo? I ruled out sona and other healers because I want to roam/have fun, I narrowed it to Blitzcrank grab pro Leona cc chain queen Thresh and the infamous madlife god. I've also considered Pantheon support for the great roaming, but I'm not sure how viable it is. Which is the best/your favorite roam support? How do support mains feel about taking smite or should I stick to taking summoner 4 summoner 3 most of the time? When are appropriate times to go for deep wards and clear out wards? I would also appreciate any other general info on supporting since I am relatively new to it.

No baker guy.

Thresh has the highest skill ceiling, so could probably take you furthest as you master him.

Leona was my support of choice when I was silver. If the adc follows up it can pretty reliably result in kills. Frustrating when adc does not follow up.

Blitz is a filthy zoning monster. Entirely reliant on landing grabs. Perhaps the strongest of the options if you can land grabs. (I find blitzcrank one of the most frustrating champs in the game, and is currently my prefered ban. As an ally they feel useless if they're not landing grabs, as an enemy theres not much a team can do if a squishy is grabbed.)

Very little good reason to take smite when playing support role in a conventional manner. Exhaust or ignite, usually exhaust.

Deep ward when lane is pushed and you know where the enemy jg is (e.g. ganking top), and you have enough immediately useful wards placed. Clear wards if you have a reason to (e.g. ally jg looking to gank or trying to force them to facecheck, or if you're looking to roam and don't want to be spotted leaving). Make sure you/your team is actually using wards you place, I probably wouldn't bother placing wards between first and second tier towers for fancy tp plays in an uncoordinated team for example.

Don't forget to place and replace control wards.

Thanks, really helpful stuff! I'm kind of concerned about picking up thresh since I've heard he is not very low elo friendly. Assuming I took thresh out of the picture, would you recommend leona or blitz? Or do you think I should just bite the bullet and dedicate myself to learning thresh?

I am a fan of praising the sun.

In low elo people are crazy and constantly all in teamfighting, and that's what leona does well.

Cool, what do you think about off meta supports like riven? I know she has some big cons as support but casuals don't really abuse that. Reasons it could be good 1: strong roam/mobility 2:can invade and fight the jungler for wards 3: snowballing

I like off-meta supports in normals, and often have a weekly S-rank chest related adventure with them. Do not consider riven support to be a good idea unless you happen to be a riven main, and even then. Remember, as the support you have very little gold and are underleveled, so the only person you may be able to 1v1 after laning phase is over is the enemy support, and probably shouldn't be even trying to do that since it's more likely that help will come and kill you, or your carries are in trouble and you need to be there to help peel them. The only support-y things riven has is a short melee range stun and a telegraphed knockup, so as off-meta supports picks go shes pretty far down the list imo.

I do not like off-meta supports in ranked, even if they turned out to be super successful in normals. Many people will be tilted simply by the pick, and then because they're tilted, even if you personally do well, you might have unintentionally tilted other teammates. Don't do it unless you're in a 5 man premade.

Shen Pai support works wonders. max e and just w all aa that head your way. you can also roam/gank really easily as a ninja. also nauty naut is a easier form of thresh if you feel like it.
