Kinky Ninja's shower thoughts: Why I stopped playing Shen

When I first started playing this game in Season 2, my favorite champions were Talon and Shen. Talon is still one of my favorite champions. But Shen fell out of my favor.

Why?

I didn't know at first.

But the more experienced I became at the game throughout the last 3 and a half years, the more I understood.

His skill cap is just too low.

I'm an intelligent person and I've had a knack for videogames since a young age. I learn fast. Shen was very nice as an easy starter champion, and despite how much I love Shen, the more I played him, the less fun I had with the game.

There just aren't enough nuances in his kit.

Think about it. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to differentiate between a good Shen and a bad one?

Shen just does...Shen things. The most skill-showing part of his kit is his E. The way it interacts with Flash, when you use Flash while in the dash, etc. That's it. Timing of your ult as well as map and team awareness, and that's it. You're just a brick wall that moves and sustains.

His skill cap just isn't high enough for me.

That's why I play champions like Yasuo and Zed, and sometimes Talon. Because I don't like being limited. I don't want my potential to be brought down by the lack of skill that my champion requires. Look at Nunu. Look how binary his kit is. Not a single skillshot anywhere. The most creative thing you can do with him is ult in a fucking bush. That should say a lot about how low skill cap he is. And he's just one example.

So yeah. That's why I don't play a champion I like anymore very often. He's just not skillful enough.

I still play Shen, just not as often as I used to when I was starting out.

At the end of the day, I wish he was more than a starter crutch to me. I like him, but Zed will forever be my main Kinky Ninja.

Champions like Nunu and Shen are terribly outdated and need updates to be more engaging, more viable, and more menacing champions. Nunu suffers from being a tank mage, though he only has two skills that actually damage the enemy, one of those two being his ult, one is an attack that only affects minions and monsters , and the fourth is a meager buff to movement and attack speed, which doesn't benefit him at all unless he's building attack damage (HA!) or trying to proc up his passive for a free spell (HA!), or buffing the DPS guy [HA!)].

Shen's problem is he's a tank but is incentivized to build as a bruiser while specializing in neither category. His "heal" does too little too slowly to be of any real benefit or threat to enemies and allies alike, his W outside of the shield requires attack speed to take advantage of his passive, and his E is his only source of crowd control (which is bad for being a tank, whose whole shtick is to be a bad enough menace with his crowd control that the enemy is incentivized to focus him). His ult is fine.
