Stop judging people on what champion they select

Mira Arya Enthe··37 votes·1,965 views

Really really tired of seeing posts like "Who do you hate playing with?"

Tired of people seeing I highlighted Riven in Champion Select and immediately flaming my or even banning my pick because they assume I am toxic.

I'll admit. I've met more rude players playing Vayne or Yasuo than nice ones. But I am not going to punish the nice or even capable players immediately when they choose that champion.

Maybe that is just what they enjoy in this game? Maybe they like their lore, dialogue or the fun things they can do? Maybe they are practicing a hard champion because they like a challenge?

Same goes for "easy" champions. I get flamed for picking Garen, Ashe or Malzahar. Look, I just like those characters and have fun playing them. If you picked Azir and lost to Malzahar, that does not make me an inferior human being. I play some hard champions like Riven and Vayne. Some moderate ones like Poppy and Shyvana. And some "easy"(mechanically) ones like Ashe and Soraka. Because I just like these characters.

And posts like "Who do you hate playing with" are just spreading prejudgement and toxicity. That would be like judging all people who have brown hair based on how one acts. Just stop. Give people a chance. And have the guts to be kind.

Quite often blaming and flaming are a defense mechanism. When people play mechanically challenging champions their mistakes stand out. They get flamed a lot. And so I personally feel a lot of Vayne and Riven and Yasuo and Azir players get so toxic because the community hammers them so much.

While mechanically easy champions your achievements don't stand out much. As such people flame you for "playing an easy champion" to relieve themselves of blame for their tower diving a full HP Malzahar with all cooldowns. Which means players who play "easy" champions get defensive... and flame.

It's a vicious cycle. Just stop. We are all here to have fun and do our best.

Mentally preparing and flaming are two different matters. I don't trust Teemo Junglers. Still going to be polite and try to help them where I should. I had a Teemo jungle carry me once. And giving him a shot was worth the times I have lost with them. Because he was just a nice guy.

The reason people hate playing with Rivens or Yasuos or other champs that require you to carry a game isn't the champion. It's the people who play them. Being in charge of winning the game by getting kills and snowballing often leads to a mentality of "These people are beneath me, I'm just carrying them" We hate playing with THOSE PEOPLE. And THOSE PEOPLE usually play those champions

I've met some real jerks playing Soraka who ended up intentionally feellding because their very polite Vayne didn't tower dive with them. I've met some very Toxic Garens who yelled at their jungler for not feeding them. And some polite Yasuo's who gave two kills, said "Sorry. I'm just awful" and then came back as a team player.

I play Riven. If you don't win your lane you group and build defensive items after cleaver. I never flame unless my jungler straight up dives Malzahar, alone, at full HP, with all summoner spells up. And then gets mad at me for not following through, while I was in fountain. Otherwise I'm fine.

More like the flaming tends to make players of that champion toxic. Just earlier, got out of a game as Riven. I was very polite, even to our lvl24 0/7/2 Zed who DC'd for several minutes AND apologized for the loss. Even though we lost, our Vayne was very polite. Why? We all were just decent and make no assumptions about one another.

Meanwhile somebody on the enemy team automatically assumed I was some sort of jerk for playing Riven...

Just because there CAN be some trust in some stereotypes. Does not mean you can treat other human beings like trash for their champion choice, skin color, brand of T-Shirt, voice, etc.

Oh I don't, I go into every game with a Yasuo or Riven in it silently assuming that they will be toxic at some point. If they aren't, I count it as a pleasant surprise and move on

I agree with this and I think everyone should take that as a pretty good example. Stereotypes do exist because they usually evolve from commonly observed trends. The issue arises when someone takes their assumption, and then does something about it before it has been observed to be true in this case. It's fine to make an assumption about someone, just don't base all of your things around that assumption before confirming it.

Why would anyone ban Riven if they think the player's going to be toxic? If you ban Riven they're just going to be more toxic if they're already toxic.

It's not even just in champ select either. Sometimes it's in game due to the person having bad experiences with that champion before. I accidentally killed the enemy support as Sona and my adc gave up saying I was taking all the kills. I was 1/1/3.. The toxic attitude is something that isn't going to go away anymore, but we can at least try to make things better. I go into some games skeptical of my teams champion choices, but at the end of the day, if your Riven top feeds.. was it because they are bad, or because they were struggling? People assume much more often than they give credit for.summoner 4

If anything, these posts/threads asking who people hate playing with is more of a questionnaire and that it's just a good ol' "what's your opinion" thread. You're overreacting.

Fine, we get it that people shouldn't flame or troll because someone else picks something else they don't like, but that doesn't mean we're not allowed to have opinions either.

True stuff. I have never assumed anything about anyone when I play, and I often start friendly conversations, some of them are nice, others not so much. But you're right about the bias. The mains feel it. I was in champ select once, playing Brand mid. The top laner locks in Riven.

Me: Nice, we have a Riven top. (I meant this to start a conversation, as I don't get those often.) Riven: It's okay, I'm not a toxic Riven :) Me: Never thought you were mate :)

I always say nice or cool, we have somebody newish in a role. But the Riven player automatically assumed I was being negative about them. Riven even curbstomped her lane and was still nice and agreeable to all of us, even the enemy. No BMing. No salt from a bad teamfight later on in the game. We won with nice feelings all around and honors for everyone. It was nice.

Prejudice has existed LONG before video games had characters that carry stigma, and League is no different. Generally speaking, most champions have something to say about the people who play them, and as impartial as you're trying to be, you have your own as well; everyone does, even if it's not a prominent feeling. If you want to main Yasuo and claim you're a decent person, I won't believe you because I hate his fanbase more than the character, but you actually might be one of the nicest people in the world. I have no way of knowing that, and will automatically profile you when you autolock him based on my experience with people who enjoy playing him.

Note that it doesn't mean I instantly flame in champion select, only if/when they cry that the team isn't building around them (because I've seen it enough to expect it.) I'm also not saying it's an excuse, but this is just me admitting my thought process. Everyone profiles, everyone stereotypes, some are more honest than others, but regardless of how nice you try to be with predetermined "toxic" picks, your type as a whole will still be discriminated and there's nothing you can do to change people's minds. I should know - I main Vayne.

Enough of toxic picks, how about "cheery" picks like Nami? Nami players are generally the most positive players I've ever encountered, and when I see a toxic one, I just think "wow that guy was a prick" and remember that her fanbase as a whole is the exact opposite. Same situation, just the other side of the road - profiling still occurs.

Recently I have seen more toxic supports than anything. And I mained support for 2.5 seasons. Doesn't mean I consider all supports to be bad or profile them. Don't impose your ideological standards on me. I enter a game with a fresh slate of players and view them as that. The thing that does sometime set me off is crude, rude, sexual or trollish usernames at most. Especially if explicit. I don't view a Vayne player any different than if they had locked Ashe.

Keevalroy3 votes

Oh but you imposing ideological beliefs on people with a different vision than you is fine? Hmm. And as I said, everyone profiles. It's what we do. The only thing that sets people apart in that sense is how much they do it, and how outward they are about it. Every single person discriminates in some way, and it doesn't need to be noticeable for you to identify that you're doing it. It just happens.

Confirmation bias. People are told these players are toxic, so when they are it stands out. But they forget all the ones who joke that they are bad, apologize for taking kills or try to help their teams. Or just don't use chat.

Your Soraka example kinda made me laugh. Even when FoTM abusers are playing her, I never see them cast the first stone because of the nature of her kit. It's designed around helping your teammates. You need your teammates or you can't do anything. Support in general is about helping your teams do well so you can do well, love it or hate it. Sometimes I'm not crazy about it, but I bite my tongue because I know I'm going to get hit 10x harder by the enemy team if I get in a fight with some absolute jerk who alleges I didn't heal them in time in the most verbally abusive way possible.

Funny enough this happened with a Riven yesterday, even when we were winning. I really wanted to clap back, you have no idea how badly I had to resist that urge, but instead I decided to save her from a 1v3 situation in which she was able to get a double kill because of the clutch heal I saved for her. I had to show her up that way. If I was playing a laner I would have probably had a comeback, but it's hard healing/supporting people you are arguing with. I learned that early on. You shouldn't in general of course, but it goes double for a support.

Champions that are feast or famine like Riven and Yasuo can cause a player to tilt and become toxic because of the nature of there kit. Therefor you're going to see way more of those players with inflated egos or hurt feelings when that doesn't work out. When you pick those types of champions you bank on being able to get that edge early that pushes you into your oppressive mode, when it doesn't happen it is the most underwhelming feeling you can experience in this game.

I know this because I used to play the queen of feast or famine champions, old Fiora. I know what it was liking messing up early, and getting punished for it the rest of the game. It puts you on edge, it's not fun and the future of the game looks bleak, especially with how isolated top lane is. I understand why we see more toxic Yasuo and Riven mains, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we do see them being more toxic.

I don't think anyone should comment on your pick in champion select if it doesn't sacrifice team composition, even if it is Nunu . It brings the team down, and hurts your chances at winning significantly. However you can't control people's experiences, or how they feel about certain champions privately.
