She doesn't desperately need a buff simply because she's not throwing out Leblanc levels of burst into a team fight. It's not her identity, it's never been her identity and frankly its toxic for it to be her identity. She's still extremely good because no matter the situation, she will be relevant to the very late game.

Kayle is a walking AOE ranged black cleaver/Abyss sceptre who can shut down all-in comps and catch comps, while making her team a catch comp in itself. Her burst is mitigated but building her with damage is not a bad idea, since her ultimate if properly timed can ensure trades in her favour regardless of whatever burst she's fighting against.

She also has exceptionally good wave clear and can push lanes nicely throughout the game. Unfortunately this leaves her vulnerable to ganks early, but like I said, even giving your opponent a kill or two won't matter as long as you keep up in farm and switch your roll to a utility support.

Her team fights are uncompromised which more than makes up for her removal of being an assassin archetype.

Nah she's only good with teammates around. She used to be good in solo lanes (top/mid) but now Kayle will have a hard time vs either AD or AP (not just Juggernauts, but long range mages and the bruisers with gap-closers are enough to make her life miserable. Even assasins who she used to be counters can deal with her now: Talon, Zed, Fizz, Katarina, ...) .

Kayle was overnerfed. Her AD and AS are both smaller than supports like Nami, Sona or Karma, and even scale worse. At lv18 her base AD is only 99 (thanks to the recent nerf -5AD), whilst Darius has 145 base AD and Garen has 136 base AD. That's quite funny for her primary tag "Fighter" (i.e. bruiser) .

And her ult is nice but think about new champions like Ekko, Kindred their ult is even better. Tahm Kench shield (E) can last more than 3 seconds and can absorb more damage; and he can still save some ally with his Devour (W), even when that ally is in CC. Soon the ult of Kayle will be outclassed and she'll be like a poorman's Karma - occasionally support/jungle/top/mid ?

In a very rough correllation, as a champion's playrate decreases, their winrate increases; (VERY rough, since power is related to playrate). Basically, because if you're confident enough in your Kayle play to bring it into ranked, you're probably really good at Kayle. The 'games played' graph is good, but it's not super useful when compared to winrate, since they're on very different timescales (all time vs. by patch).

She's still incredibly strong, but mostly it's just a matter of small sample sizes.

I'll give you a hint. What do you think of "Karthus's win-rate" at Riot Worlds Championship 2015?

  • It's 100%

But only 1 game play. (so it's 1 pick over 70 or so, basically < 2%)

If you are curious and open Champion.gg to lookup for Karthus, you'll find him "the top laner that dealt the most damage to champions" !

But only Plat+ players (and from Riot servers, which misses some data from other regions, like China servers are belong to Tencent and SEA servers are of Garena).

So, is Karthus a "sleeper OP" champion? Should I buy Karthus and sweep the top/mid lane?

Nah, his win-rate is high because simply the pick/play rate is too low, the sample size is too small to be accurate for statistics. On top of that the sample size is collected from a minority of players (Plat+ players are lower than 20% the number of players on known servers), and it's even less if you count many unknown players from China & South East Asia.

So, it's the same principle with Kayle. She has very low damage compared to the past, just a shadow of what she was. She still can help win games, by using her abilities on the carries of the team (now with low dmg she is not a carry, regardless of AD or AP builds).

The spike you see in win-rate is from hard-core Kayle "mains", who have at least 500+ games with her (and even 1000+ games). They are seasoned players who had used Kayle in multiple roles against a lot of match-ups, so they managed to get 46%-49% win-rate eve when Kayle was nerfed to the ground (I'm a Kayle main too).

Now that Kayle was absent from competitive for more than 2 years, ppl seems to forget about how to play against her so when the "main" players bring her back she can get 52%-60% win-rate for those players. (Similarly, you'll see on champion.gg the top-laners with high win-rates includes Heimerdinger, Karthus, Wukong, Swain or even Quinn, ... with low pick-rate and high player-base-games)

But I would like to repeat - as a Kayle main - that her damage is quite low now and she will NOT carry you. She desperately needs buff to be a carry. Other than that, you needs some experience and positioning to buff R the carries late game to win teamfight (but the pre-requisite is that your team are not very behind until late game).

Statistics can be lies, believe it or not. You may argue that Zac has 100% win-rate and his pick rate > 2% (2/70) at Worlds 2015. But if you buy Zac and bring him to ranked games, you may see that his damage is low and it's hard to win game with him unless you have quite some experience.
