Tahm has an issue with his gameplay that needs to be addressed.

I'm someone that's really loved Tahm since his reveal came out from a thematic sense and also enjoyed his gameplay since he was released. I've been playing him a lot since he hit live and loved being able to save allies with his w (Mostly I've played him as a support).

However, as other people have started understanding how he works, he's gotten harder and harder to actually use effectively, and the reason for this is the same reason Skarner was no good after his first rework. He has no sticking power.

Tahm's current problem is that he can only provide something for his carry in lane by Devouring them when they get cc'd or might die. outside of that, all he can do is poke the enemy sometimes with his Q. He doesn't have the tools to be a poke support and his peel comes from his q, which is just a slow and has a long cast time, or his w, which while powerful, also makes his carry unable to fight.

Janna is considered the queen of peel but Janna has her slow, her shield, her tornado, and her ult which can all be used for this purpose, and they are also good for offensive use, Tahm has only two ways to effect things in a fight, his q and w.

Now Tahm has the tools to be a fantastic all in support, he could bring a jungler in for a gank with his ult, he can slow someone down and then get stacks to stun them or just gobble them up and them he and his carry can turn their attention to another target for a while, he can draw agro to himself and then use his shield to survive long enough to kill the enemy and he gets damage for being tanky so its easier to do this. But the issue with this is that he has no way to stay on a target.

Too many times I've tried to go in on the enemy bot lane and q'd one of them, then walked about and gotten an auto off and then... they use a gapcloser or cc me and then get out of my range or keep me from q'ing them again by getting behind minions. And while the stun on q with a fully stacked passive is great, you often times can't actually get it because you need to use your q just to catch up to someone and then need to devour them to keep them from running off, thereby consuming your passive so you can't stun them. What he needs is some way to either catch up with people or keep them from getting away from him.

So take another support, Braum, despite him being intended to be a defensive support, he's still pretty good at going all in on someone when he needs to, if he get his passive on an enemy then he's not completely dependent on them staying in melee range for him to get three autos off, then other people on his team can apply the rest of the stacks. He also has a repositioning tool to catch people off guard or catch up with them and his ult provides a knock up and slow to keep people close to him. Skarner as he is now, has a move speed boost on w, a slow on his e, a mini stun from his passive and his displacement ult. They have plenty of tools to get to someone and stay on them long enough to do their job.

Maybe he could gain increased movement speed towards enemies with stacks of his passive and get more depending on how many stacks they have, or maybe put a speed boost on his E, it could increase with how big the shield is or maybe it could just be a decision of whether to use it to catch up with someone or to use it to tank damage a little longer. Or maybe reduce the range of his Q but make him a ranged champion so he can dish out auto harass or apply stacks without eating a ton of damage. He just needs some way to not just be a waddling tub of lard that can't actually get close enough to do anything.

Sorry, but him not being able to chase people down as a support is intended design. His E's already incredibly powerful in a support capacity, making him strong in lane without using it would just be too fucking ridiculous.

I find him pretty hard to get away from actually :/. Not only that, he does the most damage out of all supports even if he builds full tank because of that insane Devour damage. lategame

The issue is that people are learning how to deal with him. He's not tanky enough early game to be able to get to anyone with half a brain. It used to be that it wasn't too hard to keep up with them but people know what he does now and just poke him to death.

Uh..so you are complaining that people understand how to counter a new champion now? Not sure how much I can sympathize with you on this...

i agree with this. another thing i noticed that the thread title brought to mind was that his 'e' seems to de-aggro him. he stands there and takes longer than it should for him to begin his next attack, like he forgot he was in combat until he was attacked first. kinda reminds me how fiddle used to not attack after using drain.
