Viable Smite Support?

Elite4Runner··2 votes·794 views

Obviously it is acceptable for Ivern to take Smite as a support, or in any lane for that matter.

My question is, are there any other champions that would make particularly good use of taking Smite while laning in the position of a support?

And of course this almost invites the whole Singed Support controversy to show it's ugly face.

I suppose my question has more to do with wanting to know the specific benefits and potentially gold value that could come from taking Smite on specific champions and being played as a support.

If any...

My thoughts actually are around things like, when might it be better to take item 3711 as opposed to item 2049?

Could someone like Bard make better use of this because he does have a tenancy to roam for chimes?

So could roaming supports potentially pick this instead, or is Sightstone and it's upgrades still better than Tracker's Knife and it's upgrades in any situation?

And of course there are things like taking Skirmisher's or Stalker's for their respective Smite variations.

The additional Smite on the team could help to secure/contest neutral monster objectives.

Smite can be used on minions (although I'm not sure if this would really be helpful on a support)

...

And once again, I am willing to accept that it may simply be widely accepted that Smite simply isn't good on any other support.

I am actually fairly confident that Riot would actually prefer it that way.

I am not necessarily trying to make this a 'new meta strategy' but I wanted to open a discussion about it to see what the community thinks.

thresh and blitz have been known to take smite so you can smite a minion and then hook straight after to land an easy kill / play.

I've heard of that before but forgot about it until you mentioned it.

There are several common supports who could potentially make good use of that then.

Or really anyone with a linear (non-pass-through) skill shot that applies cc.

Thank you for your comment.

I don't see why not. You do have to choose which over summoner to replace though. Ivern would be useful for the counter jungling prospect, and the mana regen applies in river I believe too, so you could just be barely sitting in River for increase mana while ad farms. It is just a rick and balance system of how well can I use this? Smite in other lanes would be okay depending on style and plan. Last season I occasionally took it top and not flash for champions like Mundo, Sion, and Malphite. Ones who are hard enough to kill without them burning a flash. (Although Malph it was usually better to just get Sunfire as opposed to Cinderhaulk.)

If you lane without Flash you'll feed.

Not having Exhaust mid-late game also means you'll lose most fights.

Nasus is a wild pick smite support, because he has summoner 3 build in, with his W. His ult also works great with item 1409.

Honestly, I would ditch flash and rely on proper positioning to stay safe. As a support with lower income, I shouldn't be in a vulnerable position in the first place (and anyone who can jump on me fast enough, flash might not be enough to save my life anyway).

It's plausible, but I recommend practice ESPECIALLY if you ditch flash instead of exhaust.

I don't know about the smite part.. Ivern is very special because he can double the buff.

But about the sightstone part, 2 wards from the jg item is clearly not as good as the 4 wards from fully upgraded sightstone.

I usually rush sightstone upgrade as support just for the wards, they are just too good to skip.

Well, if you are taking MF support anyways, why not go for the bloodrazor?
