It just occurred to me that Galio healed himself off the pain of others.
Didn't even really negate it either. Kinda weird how someone who was supposed to be a guardian got sustain from the pain of those he was guarding.

Their pain emboldens him. It revitalizes him so that he can continue to live to protect them. Small minds think small thoughts.
Well thank you for the insult. I guess I should respond by saying something derogatory about your mother.
But she's a kind lady to spend time with, so I won't.
he is powered by righteous fury
flawed logic.
he gave his target an armor/mr steroid. it wasn't mean to heal them, but to PROTECT THEM FROM INCOMING DAMAGE
because % amps on already existing tanks would have been broken.

An actual shield would have been better. Flat resistances on squishies aren't that great.

flat resists on squishies are great, the chances are they don't have any prior resists and armor / mr work better on low armor / mr people due to diminishing returns

However, shields could be better because of the same reason health is better early game than resists. Once the squishy gets GA or Abyssal/Zhonyas, the resist boost wont be nearly as effective, so flat health (shield) could be better because it synergizes with the resists they already have better (although if they have RoA/Liandry's/Rylai's/Cleaver resists would synergize with that health better.)
technically a shield just absorbs flat 1 to 1 damage.
but steroids can do more or less pending already existing resistances and health pool.
when a squishy is given armor/mr its a more significant boost than a shield.

Wouldn't it be less effective on a squishy? I honestly don't know.
squishies already take 1:1 damage or near true damage thanks to sorc boots/void.
it depends on the size of the shield vs the size of the steroid.
but commonly mages have (30 + runes) 42mr, and no other mr items, they routinely get put down to 4.5MR after sorc/runes/void.
4.5MR offers (very close to 4% damage reduction)
galios W at rank 1 gave 30, or 90 at rank 5.
assuming late game.
instead of taking 96% damage from 1 ability.... well say syndras R with no orbs. you're trying to keep your carry alive afterall.
540base + 60% ap. (idk dont play syndra, well assume shes got 700ap with a rab cap build) so syndra would deal 960 true, or reduced after MR 921.6damage.
now lets add in galios + 90 MR
42 + 90 = 132, x.65 (void) = 85.8, -7.8 (runes) = 78 - 15 (sorc boots) = 63 MR left. which just so happens to offer 40% damage reduction.

now lets recalculate.
960 x .60 = 576 damage.
960 - 576 = 384 total damage reduction thanks to galio.
do you know any 384 shields?
janna shields for 160 (+35%) karma shields for 210 + (60%) (empowered)
BUT WAIT! its not a shield, its straight reduction, so that person could also use heal, other shields, some regen, lifesteal increasing their survivability even further.
sooooo...........
yeah it was better than a flat shield.
there is a balance between health total and resistances. but flat stats are better on squishies.
but being realistic here, syndra combos you with her full kit in 2seconds while galios steroid is on you for 4. so its really going to offer a ton more than 384 damage reduction.
but shields will still be on cooldown and will find themselves shredded through as if it were nothing.
(and ofc this calc didn't include things like buffs, drakes, masteries, potions, etc, its just a theory example)
It was a tradeoff. He gave THEM Mr/armour and got the heal. he could also just self cast it.
He healed off the magic absorbed by his bulwark.
An actual shield would have made more sense imo. Like healing off a %of damage the shield absorbs.
I always saw it as a way he is empowered to protect those he's defending.
He powered himself off of absorbing magi-kinetic energy. Duh
