was he that problematic to you? he was at a 2% play rate in his prime. that is 2 games out of 100. if you're bothered by that I don't want to ask what else you're bothered with

Um you need glasses because his play rate was 34% in his prime, just like Lucian when he was skilless and Jhin when he was skilless and Ashe when she was skilless.

As you can see from the popularity graph, Kog'Maw's play rate has never been above 34% for the last 2 years. There was a brief resurgence in popularity in February when people truly understood his power, but as you can see it plummeted to 5%. If you average the pick rate between February and September remained at 5%. I don't know where you got our data from, but I'd love to look at it.

All of those graphs are averages over long periods of time, so when the average spikes up to 8 or 12%, that means there was a week where his play rate was like 35% in that interval of time. That's not to mention when his win rate was even above 55%.

It makes no sense to average the play rate of one week, because one week for a champion is negligible. It could be the result of Kog'maw being free that week causing skew in data. Also, it is illogical to say that for one week his play rate was 34% when the highest peak in the graph is about 3 times smaller than your given value. If a champion is exploited it is exploited for more than a week. Why would someone play an OP champion for one week and go back to a balanced champion the next. You still haven't provided original source for where you got your 34% which only leads me to think that you've randomly created this number.

additionally, when you associate win rate and play rate, this assumption can be made. if a champion has a 55% win rate, but a 5% play rate out of 100 games the champion will win 3/5 of those games. If a champion has a 25% play rate with a 52% win rate, the champion going to win 14/25 of those games. But because the latter has a greater play rate, the chances of winning increases. The former is so small in data that the 55% is inaccurate. What I'm getting at is if a champion has a 20%+ play rate, and is close to 50% or higher, then the champion is unbalanced.

It make sense when you consider that's what happens whith every adc when they spike in popularity. I saw it personally and looked it up at the time, I only wish there was a site that didn't only focus on the most current statistics. There were times where people picked him every chance they could when he still had that double attack speed cap and Witt's End was good on him along with Ginsuo's, and that was enough for people to complain about him, so it's definitely not negligible as it lead to his nerf. And your math is wrong, a 55% chance is a 55% chance. Just like if you flip a coin and you get two tails in a row or a lot of times, you're not at any point more likely to get heads on the next throw because each toss is independently 50/50, also called the Gambler's Fallacy.

Kog'Maw was pick or ban for the 2 week period at the peak of his power. It wasn't exactly pick or ban, but the chances of Kog'Maw showing up in my games were 20% if I wasn't the one playing him. It was only for 2 weeks though. After they removed the AS passive on his Q, his popularity dropped because people felt the loss of power in the early-mid game. This was the same time when Korean Lucian rose in popularity and people preferred to play him over Kog'Maw (http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/lucian) Compare the play rate of Lucian vs Kog'Maw. Do you see how your numbers are evidently incorrect? As much as people complained about Kog'Maw, it was x10 about Lucian and the new, effective armor pen/shred build. I don't think comparing the flip of a coin to win rate in League is the correct way to approach % chance of winning. What you're assuming is that every game is 50/50 which isn't the case. the % chance of winning pertains to the number of people who play the champion, the skill cap of the champion, and the strength of the champion. The strength of Kog'Maw was immense, I do agree. However, his skill cap is extremely high because of how squishy he is, how terrible his early game is/was , and he has no safe guards (no hard cc, no evasive abilities, no move speed buff etc.). Lucian was substantially more fun to play because of his strength and skill cap ( his ability to go in and out of combat utilizing his passive and W). So few games of Kog'Maw were played, compared to Lucian, that the 55% was higher than its actual value. Had people played more games it would have surely been 52% until you get to 150+ games like I did where I had a 60% win rate but I had to put in those 150+ games and the knowledge of my champion to produce such a number. Once again, it is not a coin toss. A game isn't decided before the game actually begins.
