So... Why are defensive ADC items (Guardian Angel and MoM in particular) getting buffed exactly?

Warlord Rhinark··7 votes·3,102 views

Hey guys, DownwiththeADCtriarchy69 here back at it again with more posts about how much I hate ADCS.

Today I want to talk about two small items called "Guardian Angel" and "Maw of Malmortius".

I'll be talking about Guardian Angel first.

Now before I go into the upcoming changes, let's take a look at what it currently is.

item 3026 :

Cost: 2400 gold.

Attack Damage: 40

Armor: 30

UNIQUE PASSIVE: Upon taking lethal damage, restores 50% of base health and 30% of maximum mana after 4 seconds of stasis (300 seconds cooldown).

Builds of out: item 1038 item 1029 item 2420

Now already this should sound like a pretty good item. It's cheap, grants a semi good amount of damage, great amount of armor, it builds out of a stopwatch which is basically a 600 gold one-time Zhonyas AND IT ALLOWS YOU TO CHEAT DEATH EVERY 5 MINUTES.

And not only that, but if you pick up "Perfect timing" in the Inspiration tree, you don't even have to pay for the Stopwatch AND Guardian Angel's cooldown is reduced by 15% (45 seconds). So now its cooldown is only 255 seconds. That's a free revive every 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

(The drawback is that Guardian Angel now costs 550 gold to complete instead of the usual 200).

It's literally what turns an ADC from squishy glass cannon to "Who the fuck do I focus now."

And if you get this bad boy on an Assassin?

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boooooooooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

That (Insert really OP meta assassin right here) just turned from being a break your keyboard in frustration into break your entire fucking computer in unending rage and madness.

...

And yet, almost nobody buys it.

People think (from my experience) that it's a "Late game item" and that just building damage and crit and more damage and lifesteal and even more damage first, without building any defensive whatsoever, is the best thing to do.

So what does Riot do to up it's purchase rate?

They just fucking buff it.

They just- they just fucking buff it.

For no reason (as far as I know).

They've not given very specific details about it yet, but they have mentioned 3 things:

  1. More attack damage.

  2. More armor.

  3. Builds out of a item 1031 now.

Information from here: https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/patch-811-early-look?utm_source=LeagueClient&utm_medium=OverviewTier2Pos3

Now there isn't mentioned a price increase, but I'm dearly hoping that it gets one, IF these changes go through. Currently it builds out of item 1038 item 1029 item 2420 which is 1300 gold, 300 gold, and 600 gold respectively, which makes Guardian Angel only cost 200 gold to complete (550 gold if you picked up "Perfect Timing").

Now with item 1038 item 1031 item 2420 , which is 1300 gold, 800 gold and 600 gold respectively, we're already up at about 2700 gold. If the extra 200 gold (550 if you take Perfect Timing) still carry over, we're looking at 2900 gold, which is a 500 gold price increase.

This is just theorycrafting, but this is how I think the new item 3026 will look:

Cost: 2900 gold

Attack Damage: 50

Armor: 40

UNIQUE PASSIVE: Upon taking lethal damage, restores 50% of base health and 30% of maximum mana after 4 seconds of stasis (300 seconds cooldown).

Builds out of: item 1038 item 1031 item 2420

Next up we have item 3156 .

This is how it currently looks:

item 3156

Cost: 3250 gold

Attack Damage: 50

Magic Resistance: 45

Cooldown Reduction: 10%

UNIQUE PASSIVE - LIfeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs magic damage equal to 300 + 1 per bonus magic resistance for 5 seconds (90 seconds cooldown.)

UNIQUE PASSIVE: Lifegrip: When Lifeline triggers, gain 20 Attack Damage, +10% Spell Vamp and +10% lifesteal until out of combat.

Builds out of: item 3155 item 3133

Now already this sounds like a pretty good, if expensive item, right? It isn't as flexible as Guardian Angel which can be used in pretty much any situation regardless of enemy team comp, but it helps really nicely against enemy magic damage team comps.

It grants a helluva lot of stats.

It grants a free Morgana shield.

And it even builds out of a Hexdrinker which allows you to get the Passive EVEN before you have completed the item.

Now, for some ODD reason this item is getting buffed as well.

  1. More Attack Damage

  2. More Magic Resistance.

  3. Shield no longer scales with Magic Resistance.

Again, information taken from here: https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/patch-811-early-look?utm_source=LeagueClient&utm_medium=OverviewTier2Pos3

They haven't mentioned any specific stats, upgraded build paths or price increases so it's fairly hard for me to guess how the new MoM is going to look like.

Now as for you people thinking "Oh, the "No longer scales with Magic Resistance" is a nerf you doofus stop calling it a buff" out there, please consider this.

  1. It already gives a flat 300 shield.

  2. Champions that actually buy MoM (ADCS, Assassins, SOME fighters) generally buy it as their ONLY Magic Resistance item anyways, often buying straight damage for the rest of their build so the magic resistance scaling is kinda useless.

  3. The Attack Damage and Magic Resistance is getting buffed to compensate.

And with BotrK and Bloodthirster having their prices decreased, we can expect unkillable Drain-tank ADCS with high resistances, a free Morgana shield AND a free revive to become the next big thing.

Not to mention all the peel they get from their team.

Basically, this is forcing Grievous Wounds to become a must buy from now on. Especially with the "Insane Mundo healing" everyone is talking about.

Now here's my question for the day. WHY are these items getting buffed exactly? As far as I know, these items are already in a pretty good spot and I don't see why the should become even stronger. Feel free to put a vote in the poll and leave a comment down below sharing why YOU think these items are getting buffed.

Maw because it needs it. Hextrinker is strong, but no one ever upgrades it to maw till he's at fullbuilt cause maw is rather weak for the cost Upgradeing hextrinker to Maw costs 1950g and brings 1500g worth off stst without the passive.

For Ga, i'm not sure it's a straight buff. At fullgear, sure, but you buy it for the revive and not the stats, and haveing to invest more gold to get that is a nerf, especially for melecarries like camille that get it ~3ed item. Though i still think that GA should not have any off-stats at all, that was a horrible decsion from riot...

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

Well.

Building B.F Sword and Cloth Armor only to have the stats you just purchased gone isn't that satisfying.

I'm more disappointed in Riot swapping out Guardian Angel's Magic Resistance with Attack Damage.

I'm practically not allowed to build it on a mage anymore without being called a troll.

Häxel4 votes

well same you can say about banshees as building it now on an adc would resolve to also be called as a troll.

Warlord Rhinark2 votes

I miss building Banshee's on my Tank.

Häxel1 votes

honestly it sucked. beside maybe a rammus who wanted to roll in and not get stopped everytime by a lux or morgana q it jsut droped at the begin and was useless. Adaptive helm and abyssal mask far more effective as i can reduce the damage from battlemages realy good or increase my own engage damage realy good.

I also prefer far more tanks building gargoyels to get tanky over a fight instead of building ga to get revived after a fight as you can try to ignore a tank when he uses gargoyels or still fight him but if he gets revived you can't focus him and have then to kill him again while he has far more time to get cds back.

Sire Hippington1 votes

depends, the guinsoo's carries actually can use banshie's/zhonya's for defense if needed.

Häxel1 votes

it is faaaaaar more viabel to play a katarina with a ga as before you play a kog'maw with zhonyas or a varus with banshees. also guinso carries already go wits end for high mr values, so banshees not realy needed. if you start to go banshees at the end you gonna loose the game as crit already starts to outscale in the lategame onhit.

well we can easily fix that by nerfing how strong the item 3155 proc is, or lowering its mr.. or something... maybe make it on par with

item 3191

i mean u get a absurdly strong passive MORE mr which is worth WAY more than armor anyways.

Sire Hippington3 votes

simply nerfing hextrinker would just result in both not getting used. Seekers gets bought despite beeing rather weak cause the final item, zhionya's, is damn strong. If hextrinker was pn pair with seekers, Maw would need to be on-pair with zhonya's.

However, i think there are other ways of buffing maw than a raw stat increase. First off, it should once again stack with steraks. With steraks beeing melee only for a while now, there is no need to prevent stacking, and it would greatly increase itemisation options for fighters. Assasins wouldn't abuse it cause they can't use the base ad from steraks well, and adc can't abuse it cause it's melee only. Other than that, i'd like to see boost to the lifegrip passive rather than raw stats, putting more focuse on the 'figthing back at low health' part of the item. Change the 10% spellvamp+lifesteal to 15% omnivamp, add the old 20%as to it and maybe a melee only 8% ms boost and maw really changes thngs once it triggers. In exchange for such buff, i'd happiely accept some nerfs to hextrinker.

Mcsquzzy1 votes

I think letting the steraks and maw stack again would remove AP teemo from toplane. So go ahead

see, only benefits!

to be fair item 3026 is more of a bruiser item as an adc item. It bothers me that it still gets build out of a item 1038 isntead of a item 1037 while item 3812 it is the direct opposite. makes not much sense to me cause dd is like the brother to item 3072 withe ven equal costs in 8.11.

Ga jsut sucked as an defensive adc item, now it is a little bit better.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

I really don't know why you think it's a bruiser item.

Besides every single ADC in the game, all these people benefit extremely from Guardian Angel:

Kayn MasterYi Rengar Talon MonkeyKing Zed

Häxel2 votes

well these are not adcs. Wukong you can see as a bruiser, same as red kayn.

Current ga gives far to less ad and no attackspeed or crit (the 3 stats an adc needs) to be good on adc. Nothign with "every single adc", only adcs would be Vayne and Kai'sa and thats just cause they go full in and get other bonus stats like vayne gets 40 ad on ult and kai'sa has her evolutions. Graves you could say if you wanna count him as adc.

On high range adcs who prefer to have high ad, crit and as current ga sucks. It is the lowest ad item and has just 30 armor as wella s a passive that would them revive but normaly high range adcs die as the alst champ on a team so not realy useful as a passive unless your positioning sucks and an adc kills you at the start fo a fight. But Bruisers or Assassins don't need Crit and mostly neither as. Assassins need ad and pen. bruisers ad and defensive stats. You see Ga far more builded on Assassins and Bruisers as on Adcs as like i told only Vayne and Kai'sa are currently decent with that item.

D357R0Y3R3 votes

Do you see adcs buying defense?

No, because it's shit they go full glass canon and make the meta fucking aids where there is so much damage and everyone gets burst by crit

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Yeah but that's based on what crit currently is.

With the upcoming changes making crit less, well, "critty" (it's a term now), defensive items becoming more powerful and lifesteal items becoming cheaper, I fear ADCS will waver more towards defensive drain-tank builds (item 3153 item 3072 item 3156 item 3026) rather than just building full crit.

That's way healthier than crit GW exists and the damage is less bursty and less impactful on squishy targets

Blade of the ruined king meta is healthier than crit meta, Because adcs do not burst squishies and don't assassinate assassins fasters than assassins themselves

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

I will have to agree, it is healthier.

But just because it is healthier, does it make it an excuse to buff it?

well yea cuz as the others said, maw is terrible, and GA isn't really getting buffed The BT buff is the only one really questionable i don't know why they did it

ADC Items

Guardian Angel and MoM

[sg-lux-2]

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Okay let's address this.

If Guardian Angel and MoM WASN'T considered ADC items, then why are they getting changed in the upcoming "ADC/Marksman patch"?

Wînter Fox3 votes

They're options for some scenarios for ADCs, but calling them ADC items is a stretch. An ADC with both Maw and GA is one of the below: A. feeding so horribly that he has no choice but to go defensive B. new to the game and building wrong C. Graves

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Do you still think it'd be "building wrong" with the upcoming buffs to the items?

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Depends. MOST of the time Merc Scimi is better for ADCs against magic damage than Maw since it offers lifesteal and a cleanse to break CC before something else hits you. The only time an ADC will buy Maw over Scimitar is if literally the entire enemy team is magic damage (in which case they MAY get both) or if their pea brain can't comprehend hitting a button will arguably "shield" you for more than the maw shield would since you won't get hit to begin with.

Also, with the item changes it is DEBATEABLE if you'd ever see both. The only time both would be viable is if BOTH the enemy mid laner and the enemy AD is a threat AND you are building the BoRK+Black Cleaver value build which only like 3 ADCs can actually do. None of the on-hit ADCs are going to build it (which are going to still be the best ones in 8.11 since they are already at the top and crit is getting knocked down further) and none of the crit ones are going to build it either. Their builds take too much inventory space and are too synergistic to break with other items. I'm not getting 3rd item GA on Kaisa when Hurricane vastly outperforms it. If you are in a position that you need 3rd item GA something went wrong beforehand or your positioning is wood 12 tier.

Daddy Ants3 votes

Because it's a mediocre item that's rarely built on ADC's.

Maw is only really built by Bruisers.

So now it's cooldown is only 255 seconds.

Translation: So now it is cooldown is only 255 seconds.

I swear there were more examples in here though, ya musta fixed em cuz that's the only one now.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Thank you for pointing this out. I'll fix it immediately.

While I'm at it, do you have any opinion on why defensive items are getting buffed that you would like you share?

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

I just want to point out 2 things.

  1. Taking perfect timing does not give you a stopwatch. It gives you a fake stopwatch which only takes 250g off the pricetag and not 600g.

  2. No one building GA is taking perfect timing to begin with. ADCs almost EXCLUSIVELY go Precision+Sorcery because if the enemy ADC takes Gathering Storm and you don't. You lose the game on the spot almost if the game goes past 30 minutes. The only other option taken is Precision+Resolve if you are going to get smashed in lane by a lane bully and you are playing something like Sivir/Twitch.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes
  1. I already said that the Fake Stopwatch only takes 250 g (Hence, why I said it cost 550 to complete a GA with Perfect Timing).

  2. You're probably right. I just felt I needed to include the "This rune has an effect on the item" in the post.

CrestfallenNight1 votes

Not gonna bother reading half of this because ADCs are like paper. I couldn't save my vayne today (even though we won ;) ) from rengar in 2 seconds. This is stupid, doesn't make sense. ADC players are blessed with their chance and spotlight, but also cursed for being prioritized target in fights. A tank, a mage, an assassin or other adc doesn't even need to use their full kit to kill an adc, so pls. ADCs need less damage and MORE armor.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Did your Vayne even buy Guardian Angel at all?

Did your Vayne even buy Guardian Angel at all?

She didn't, but it usually doesn't really help.

Warlord Rhinark1 votes

Idk man.

Besides a Zhonya's / a Janna ultimate, I'm pretty sure Guardian Angel is the #1 best Rengar counter in the game.
