Make Champion price reductions on reworks as well as new releases.

ModCaptainMårvelous··76 votes·16,477 views

Originally, around Season 4 (or was it 5?) or so, Riot announced that champions will have price drops with every new release. Every third release would have a triple price drop. This worked because Riot was still making champs at a pretty decent/fast rate while reworks weren't coming out as soon.

Now in Season 8, new champs are very few/far between. We're lucky to get 4-5 a year and, while understandable, it still makes the process a snail's pace for reductions. You won't even see more than one triple-drop a season at this rate. So with that, I petition that Riot should also reduce prices when a rework comes out.

By doing this, you further drop the prices and allow for new players/vets to unlock what they need at a faster rate. Don't have much more to add to that.

No thats not fair. Since rework champions dont chage their original price, they shouldnt change the price of other champions. That would simply extremely discourage the rework of low BE champions like Nunu, and would actually cause loses in sales for Rito. They have already given us plenty of free stuff, lets not be greedy and ask for too much.

Completely misunderstand how it works it seems.

When a new champ is released, the champ several seasons back gets reduced. In this case, you'd just add it to the pool. It wouldn't mean Nunu goes down in price but rather the last champion released goes down in price. I think we're at Vi or something.

No, he actually does have a perfectly good point. Imagine adding up the BE cost of every champion together. When a new champion gets added there is a 6300 increase to that pool, with a smaller decrease on another champion, and a larger one every 3 new champions.

With a rework though that pool doesn't change at all; so if your idea was put in place there would be nothing but a net loss on BE, and the pressure of BE costs does generate RP purchases for Riot.

So while I do agree that it would feel better to see champion price drops more frequently, it doesn't actually make sense to do price drops for reworks for the same reason that there are price drops for new champions.

That doesn't mean there isn't an argument for price drops on reworks, but you can't use the same argument that is used for new champions because they have completely different impacts on the total champion pool BE cost.

The only way reducing BE prices on rework for the same reason as BE prices are reduced on new champion would be if reworks brought champion costs back up to 6300 BE.

I have wondered about this and what would actually happen if riot just made all champions free. Like would they make more money off of skins? Outside of smurfs I cant really see people buying champions except when they do new champ bundles.

When they're new players and don't know any better. When they don't know that they're spending money on something that may or may not be viable or may get extremely nerfed in the future in which then they will waste one of their only 3 refunds on it because once again, they don't know any better.

Happens all the time. Happened to me, happened to friends, happened to tons of both forum users and board users and still happens.

Hell, look at the highest 2 upvoted threads in all of gameplay.

Actually unless you play far more games than the average League player you will be earning more BE now than before the IP rework, it's just mostly condensed into first win and level up capsules.

FutureCreator1 votes

I agree with this, but it would be even more of a net loss since, unlike new champions, many people already own champions that get reworked, so a lot less people purchase them.

HaIlMonitor1 votes

The problem right now though is new players. My friend was saying that at least all 450 champs should just be free at this point so people would have a well rounded group of champs to play. I have every champion on my main, but when I started a alt to play with low level friends its annoying to have to wait 2-3 weeks to get a champ when the meta shifts so damn fast.

KravingRice

You guys are completely forgetting about the free champ rotation and the fact that the new tutorial gives new champs to new players in season 8. If all 450 be champs were free, the free champ rotation would be removed in order to compensate which also removes the opportunity of new players to play the more expensive champs without grinding.

yeah, I remember this! I actually had no idea they stopped this because by now I've gotten all but about 10 champions? I sorta miss the days where I would wait every 1-2 months for a champion to release so that I could buy a new 4800 champion instead of a 6300

fƒ151 votes

however I think they may have stopped because they knew they would implement a system that allowed people to collect champion shards and just reduce the price of every champion unowned that was collected on level ups at that point. But yeah... I remember starting league a few weeks before the release of elise and to see champions lower in price would make me feel like my child had moved on to the next stage of their lives.................. oof

Didn't Aatrox come before Vi? Why's he still 6300?

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

Nope. Vi was early season 3. Aatrox was mid-season 4 but I can understand how his design would make you think he was a very early league one.

They gave US plenty of free stuff, sure.

The problem however, are the new players, or lack of them to be precise. Someone joins the game, only to find out he can't get a decent champions pool in two years, and all of them in five or more. They then get discouraged and leave.

League can't survive without new players, and giving them 5-10% faster champ acquisition is more of a long term investment.

Ok sure but why1 votes

Not fair? We as the player-base get things cheaper faster! What's not to love?

I mean, I saw one at the beginning of this season. Zed was 4.8k, but in s7 he was 6300 be

It is because when a new champion is added the oldest 6,300 champion becomes 4,800 BE

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

The drop per new champ is to keep the pull of 6300 champions the exact same number at all times. Could they drop 4800s to 3150s more often? Sure, but there is a reason it is locked to new champions. Also, as stated by someone else, it wouldn't make sense to do it for reworks outside of putting a spot on a calendar that may or may not exist (there isn't going to be another rework after Nunu this year since Kayle/Morgana are next year and are next for VGUs). Every 4 patches (2 months) or some other definite time would have been a better thing to ask.

Iirc not a VGU. They are just changing his W and Passive and whatever visuals are involved with doing that. He isn't getting new splashes or reworked skins or whatever. Could be wrong on this, but I believe that is what was stated.

dome0251 votes

His visuals are getting reworked from ground up, also his w gets reworked from ground up.

i mean i love free shit as much as the next guy but riot ain't gonna do this

Z3Sleeper4 votes

I love free shit as much as you and the next guy but I agree, bad business decision for Riot's profits.

But holy hell it's been 2 years of me spending BE on literally nothing but champions and I'm still ~50 off from complete.

That's about a 3 year barrier and I definitely play way more than your average player.

??? They reduce prices when new champions are released because the new champion adds an extra 6300 BE cost to the roster. But reworks don't cost the players anything. If they already own the old champion, then they basically get a new champion for free. Even if they don't own it already, reworked champions are usually cheaper than 6300, and they still don't impact the cost of the full roster.

I feel like this post only got so many upvotes because it means free discounts, and how can people disagree with free stuff. I hate to tell you, but the limited BE economy is important. People feel just as bad when they have 99999 extra BE and nothing to spend it on, as they do when they are at 0 BE and can't afford the new champion (yet).

ModCaptainMårvelous1 votes

I mean this is true but at the same time it still doesn't account for the 140+ roster with a large portion being 6300 or higher. If Riot really wants to attract new players, loosening this grind will do wonders. Plus it means that you'll be on a faster path to unlocking all the champs, which in turn puts you on a faster path to the BE cosmetic store, which = free cosmetics for players and overall a happier playerbase.

Leonerdo1 votes

That's fair enough. But I'm not convinced that unlocking every champion is all that much harder to than it was 2 or 3 years ago. You get a discount if you have a corresponding champion shard, and there's events and missions that give bonuses.

All in all, because of the new champion releases (as slow as they are) it does get a bit harder every year to unlock EVERY champion. But it's easier to get ENOUGH champions to play with, and to be able to pick up a new champion every week or two.

And if people have complaints about needing all the champions in order to be able to trade, well I think that's better tackled with a change to champion select.

... That being said, one of my points stemmed from the problem of running out of things to buy. And I just admitted that unlocking the full roster has probably gotten harder. So while I don't think it's necessary to reduce any more champion costs, I have to admit that there is less of a reason to avoid it.

I'm still not sure it makes sense to do discounts during champion reworks though. It already seems like we get a lot of value out of them. (Nunu is going to be a "new" champion that only costs 450!)

Technically they do when the champ comes out completely different. If I spent 6300 on old aatrox because I'm good at right-clicking champs and riot comes in and changes him to riven's evil twin I've now lost 6300 because I can't play new aatrox well enough to warrant using him.
