You know, for all the shit the balance team gets

I dont see a lot of people actually using their brains and thinking of how balancing actually works. If they add, remove, or tweak something in a champs kit, dont expect it to be solved right away. That's absolutely and incredibly stupid to assume it'd be fixed. They need game data, they cant just sit at a computer, change a value, and sit there and say 'well this is fixed lol.' It needs to be properly tested by tons and tons of people so they have enough accrued data to decide if it's alright for now or if it still needs a change.

Add on to the fact that they need to gather thousands and thousands of different games with sometimes just the ONE aspect they want to change, and you've got some fuckin work ahead of you. People with all different skill levels, playing in different game modes, playing in different ranks with different play styles? Yeah, let them absolutely just fix it right away. I'm not advocating that they can't do no wrong or that they're absolutely always on top of things, but I'd like to see you sift through all that god damn data and then have to make an educated guess as to where to go next. Not to mention they're looking at probably a large pool of champs at any given moment.

tl;dr: Get off your little pedestal about the balance team, they have shit to do and they'll get to it when they can. They're not brainless idiots and they take what everyone says into consideration. They also have their own internal squabbles just like any other human beings. Stop being little god damn children about it.

(Edit: it also seems like an almost thankless job, so I'd like to say I appreciate your efforts, and dont think that there arent people who don't appreciate it either.)

Eh, the whiners are typically just a vocal minority. Those satisfied with the current state of the game don't typically spam-post the boards.

For all the shit they get, they deserve all of it.

While this may have applied in season 2, the fact that there are persistent problems 3 years later shows that the problem isn't the fact that the balance team does not have enough statistics. On top of that, dota was far more balanced at this point in its development despite having to juggle a much more dynamic meta and having a much smaller team. The problem stems from the balance team's unwillingness to allow certain champions (see morello on poppy) or multiple metas from being balanced.

It's not lack of statistics, it's lack of giving a shit.

I'm on the "I love the 95% of them time and irritated 5%.

Things like karma and viegar changes I actually really liked from the start and still do now. These are things that were very disliked by most. But there's the things that they straight up avoid discussing that bugs me. Examples: As much as I loved the Veigar rework, the lack of care for his W bugs me. Things like nerf beating so a to a pulp Random removal of revive without reason (even though I never used it) As much as I hate WW, they gave him a triple dose of a nerf beating in one go. This is contrary to them saying they try to nerf champs in steps as to not trash them. Yorick being long forgoten and never spoke about. Zac not getting a skin. They say it's difficult because of his stretching. They said Velkoz was difficult due to his fluid tenticle movement. They seemed to figure that one out and gave him 2 not pallet swap skins. Things like niche champs like Veigar support being stopped within weeks but Annie reigned terror as a support, zed, lb, lee, nid were despised by everyone that didn't play for a check or only played to win (not for fun) but we're allowed by riot to exist for months-years.

And there's plenty plenty more.

But again, I really do appreciate all they do. That's why I actually never bitch about their decisions.

95% of the time I'd say the balance team is fairly good and the nerfs that they do are at least in the right direction. It's the 5% of the time that pisses me the hell off.

The best example of this was the Sona nerfs at the start of the year. Pointless nerfs to an already weak champ with no good explanation of why they were doing it. It's shit like that that makes me lose faith in the balance team.

Then why make the champion pool larger than they can handle? That would be my devil's advocate argument.

yet champs like Zed (riot's favorite) go untouched from season 1. he can poke you safely without any risk of getting ganked and is guaranteed at least one kill in a team fight if the zed knows what they're doing

Zed wasnt in season one? and I'm not disagreeing with you, nor am I stating that Riot is incapable of making bad or misinformed decisions. Also, I would have to say that I think zed is in a very odd place right now.

Since there are Diamond mains for pretty much every champion I would say this game is pretty balanced.

I love most of what they do.

They just have obvious flaws in ignoring the "real problem". They can ignore the real solution for several changes in a row, then all of a sudden they get surprised when the champion becomes shit because they finally got rid of the OP part of their kit.

The community is really bad at determining the effects of a new concept on the balance landscape, and many refuse to accept the fact that statistics can show a champion's power.

Remember #RIPSona? She got nerfed continuously and still has an insane win-rate while many try to claim that she's the worst support in existence out of pure contempt for her.

Balance is an illusion. The tide rises, the tide falls, but the sea is changeless.
