I can't lie, I hate Thresh

Salt Miner 49 Er··82 votes·8,651 views

His designer aside, there's nothing more annoying to fight on bottom lane than a Thresh support because of how much of an every-man he is. He's one of the most banned Supports at LCS for a reason, with his long range hook, that stupidly high 99% slow on his ultimate, the lantern, etc.

Let's not forget the fact that he can proc Face of the Mountain and its original item as a ranged because he has a dual attack animation.

Seriously, screw Thresh.

As much as I hate him. I'd rather verse him because I know I can dodge hooks and flay then some bullshit sona damage and any other support that heals.

Phife25 votes

sona can't teleport her enemies to safety / engage....My problem is Thresh's flay, why does it knock you up / back / forward and have a slow on it?

LegitBacon6624 votes

And flays range and width are massive

RoyaiChaos5 votes

Sona doesn't need to engage when she can kill you with a single combo.

Aeolian Melodies10 votes

Sona only wins vs Thresh if:

  1. She is played by someone definitely better than the Thresh player OR
  2. Her ADC is so much better than the other bot lane that she can literally AFK next to him and get carried
chipndip19 votes

Out of all the hooking characters Sona could fight, I think Thresh is the friendliest match-up. Leona's goes through minions, Nautilus is tankier and has a faster startup. Blitz has a faster startup and pulls you directly to him with no compromise, so you're WAY over your head if you get caught once...ever. Thresh's hook is far easier to dodge, and you can just poke him to submission while hiding behind minions. Definitely the one hook engage I can confidently use Sona against.

He can still bail out his adc and do his other #LCSBIGPLAYS, but to the very least, the vanilla laning phase isn't as bad since his hook is the slowest and doesn't pull you 5 miles out of position.

MetalGearTeemu1 votes

yeah, his hooks only a stun which pulls you halfway out of position, but thats ok, because he can come to you like a naut if he wants, and continue pulling you out of position, and he can bring the jungle along if he likes

chipndip11 votes

Thresh's hook doesn't pull you that far. It DOES stun the longest. Difference.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

Uh, all sona has to do is poke thresh down while dodging the hook.

It is that simple

Aeolian Melodies18 votes

With that logic everyone shits on Thresh.

The issue is that Sona herself is so fragile that one hook landed (which is bound to happen unless the Thresh is really committed to sucking balls) pretty much means death or at the very least blown flash, which then puts her at a big disadvantage.

Designwise he isn't too bad,I mean jack of all trades is a pretty shitty design, but the issue with thresh is that he has been fotm(not face of the mountain, flavor of the month),since release.

Oh jinx is in every game? Okay we will nerf jinx.

Thresh is in every game since the dawn of time? Nah that's fine,he has a low winrate because people who have no idea how to play him decide that when forced to support thresh is the only logical choice(I guess they do have a point actually...).

Not true, all kits are idiotic shit according to the boards, the logic here is basically: if the champion is meta, then his kit must be inherently flawed.

He's no more idiotic than the rest of them.

Except that he actually is,unlike most champions,in kassadins case even riot admitted him to be a problem, which was basically the "logic" behind his latest rework, but whereas poppy is trash tiered because her kit is cancer, kassadin keeps getting more and more work placed into him, when he is simply undeserving of so much focus, hence why I claim riot is in bed with him, there is just no logic behind him getting so much work aside from them playing favorites.

his long range hook

And blitz isnt a problem? Really? Really?

stupidly high 99% slow on his ultimate

Atleast its not a Veigar or an Annie or even an Ekko stun that lasts longer than a pregnancy. Thresh's ult only hits one person per wall. Then it breaks. Either dont chase after him so fast and let someone else take the slow, use some dashes/flash, or stay contained for 2 seconds. Instead of taking a 1.5 second slow (which you are still able to chase, shoot, use abilities, etc).

the lantern

Would be great, if people knew to TAKE THE LANTERN instead of staring at it. Other than the escape, its simply a shield. Atleast you arent as lost about where they are like some other teleports (Katarina Ekko TwistedFate summoner 12)

Let's not forget the fact that he can proc Face of the Mountain and its original item as a ranged because he has a dual attack animation.

You forgot something. The face of the mountain passive, execute, is only possible with MELEE champions. Thresh is RANGED.

Fairly certain he can proc FotM because he has a melee attack animation if he's close enough to the target.

Aeolian Melodies14 votes

The execute won't take effect, he needs to actually last hit the creep. However, due to Flay's passive, he can do it more easily than other ranged supports.

KayVaugn26 votes

Fairly certain he can proc FotM because he has a melee attack animation if he's close enough to the target.

Actually ANYONE can use FotM melee champions are the ONLY ones who get the execute, no the execute does not mean gold share, it means getting to last hit it at half HP with one auto, thresh does NOT get this execute however, he has to actually last hit it as if he was CSing in a solo lane because he is ranged unless he is matched with kalista in which case last hitting is easy because of her W passive helping him. A veigar for instance can get FotM and last hit with his Q and still share gold, he just has to last hit it as if he was in a solo lane without the added execute damage. So it's actually much harder to utilized FotM (easy to miss CS because you attacked too soon) than a normal melee champion... Why do you think coin is recommended on thresh? Because he is a ranged champion and therefore doesn't get the execute, but ranged champions still get the gold share, they just have to last hit it like normal.

Das Coconut8 votes

I do want to point out that his flay passive makes getting that last hit easier than pretty much any other ranged champ, if you manage it correctly. Still not as nice as that half health execute though.

Phife9 votes

You're defending a champion that can do everything that these other champions do on a single kit.

Don't be another board bronzie.

doiminat0r36003 votes

So a single kit, can do what everyone else can do. On a single kit. Really? Lets look at all the champions i mentioned. Alright?

Blitz's pull is better. His knock up is better. He has a silence that does 250 / 375 / 500 (+ 100% AP) AOE Magic Damage.

Veigar has a stun. A huge stun. For up to 2.5 seconds. (actual stats are 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds) Vs. a 2 second SLOW

Annie also has a stun. Again, a huge stun. Considering all of her abilities are point and click and are instantly cast, do i need to point out how her stun is more BS than Thresh's massive cooldown SLOW?

Ekko is another example. He has an AOE stun that stuns if he is in the circle, which is extremely easy to land. (if you say it is hard then you havent seen how he can teleport to a champion that is in the circle). The stun is for 2.25 seconds on all levels. Enough time for him so single handedly burst you down like a rotten tomato.

The Lantern is another thing. You can clearly see where the champion is going after they take the lantern. Not only that, but they cant just grab it from a long distance away. They have to be within that little circle that gives a shield in order for it to even be a teleport/jump/whatever you wanna call it. All the other champions with a blink ability can go anywhere their little heart desires. Most of the time while they do massive damage or lower defenses of the thing they teleport to.

And lets not forget, Everyone else that i mentioned has a better version of Thresh's Kit that does more damage and takes less skill to land because they're either a press one button or they're point and click.

Snip means I removed the words from your prior post to cut down on the overall size of the reply to save space.

Thresh gains both free damage and armour as time goes on, thanks to his passive. He can single-handedly peel an entire team with a well placed flay/Box. He has poke from his Flay passive, (which, depending on how you build him, can be pretty damn lethal) He can engage insanely well, on account of a hook>lantern>pull>flay combo, and he is more than capable of boosting his own jungler's ganking power as well as save an allies life with his lantern. Thresh brings a buffet to the table whereas most other supports bring a regular dinner.

Thresh gains both free damage and armour as time goes on

Nasus gains free damage with his Q. Nobody complains about that. He is also naturally tanky as well. There is a limit to how many souls you get a minute as well. You have a set amount and if you are either above or below that amount, the drop rate either increases or decreases.

He can single-handedly peel an entire team with a well placed flay/Box.

Janna can do that as well. Ive done it with her. Thresh is significantly harder to peel with considering that his lantern only helps a single target. And you prefer to peel the lowest health person or the highest damage person. The flay isnt very much of anything tbh. You knock someone back 100 units. Not that much of a difference. All base movement speeds are in the 300s.

He has poke from his Flay passive

Every support champion has poke. Not just from ranged auto attacks but from abilities (Thresh's Flay passive). Here are a few Alistar has his head butt, Anivia has her q, Annie has all of her abilities, Bard has his passive (dont complain about passives because his does WAY more damage per second), Blitzcrank has his pull (used with ADC to get damage and poke), Braum has his q and passive stacks, and this is just the first row of champions in the icon list.

He can engage insanely well, on account of a hook>lantern>pull>flay combo

He can engage well based off his hook. He cant cast abilities or attack until he pulls.

he is more than capable of boosting his own jungler's ganking power as well as save an allies life with his lantern.

He cant do both at the same time now can he? He has the ability to do all of these things but Jungler's already have decent ganks and he cant make an ally take the lantern. He has the capabilities, but nobody does it. And most of the time, the ally isnt able to reach the lantern.

Thresh brings a buffet to the table whereas most other supports bring a regular dinner.

He is a big man, goul, thing. On a more serious note, He does bring alot, but so do other supports. Just Lux has a root (for 2 enemies), a massive damage dealer, an execute, and a slow. And she is considered the worst support with Zilean coming in at a close second. Even Zilean has a stun, damage dealer, can REVIVE HIS CARRY, and can speed them up for escapes and engages as well. You can't say that Thresh is stronger than Someone that can bring their carry back from the dead and speed them up, and stun the enemies. You get the point.

Phife4 votes

You dont get it do you?

You've given multiple examples from DIFFERENT CHAMPIONS KITS and brought them together to try and neglect how retarded thresh really is.

Thresh has everything on a kit you could possibly ask for, a stun + pull +knock back / forward + 2 slows + an escape and engage mechanism + increased damage on autos + passive armor and AP over time just for standing next to minions.

You're telling me thats not overloaded to shit?

doiminat0r36004 votes

I am telling you that every champion has other abilities that are more practical for most situations. The stun isnt a very good stun because you cant do anything either. The pull requires your team to follow or atleast sacrificing yourself. The knock back is weak. The slow is easily avoidable and can simply be avoided by not running into the thing (the other one is a knockback that has minimal slow (40% at max rank)). The escape isnt for him. It's for his team mates. Because he is a SUPPORT. Increased damage on autos can go for Lux or Orianna (yeah she is a support). Passive Armor and AP dont mean very much except in the late game. You also have to take a risk to go get the souls.

You're telling me that it is? Although other supports can do what he does but better?

kile1475 votes

Thresh is constantly picked simply because his kit can work with any team comp, but the reality is that anything Thresh can do, someone else can do a lot better.

Nautilus has a hook, an unavoidable knockup on ult, a root for his passive, a damaging AoE slow, and a shield which not only gives him innate tankiness (something I'd argue thresh lacks even with his passive) but also gives him a lot of extra damage on his AA. Reading it off like that Naut's kit is even more OP than thresh's, yet we know his isn't op and he was actually considered sub-par for awhile until he got buffs somewhat recently.

You are complaining about this because you see a lot of thresh, but really almost all the viable supports have stuff inherent in their kits that make them "OP", because in order to support you need a strong kit to make up for your inherent lack of gold.

Zilean's stun is a great many times less reliable then Thresh's hook, Lux is, once again, not designed around supporting and is a mage so you really can't mention her, same with Nasus. This is a thread about what Thresh brings to the table compared to other supports (and not mages that can happen to fulfill the support role.)

Thresh brings free, semi-sustained poke through Flay passive something that only ranged supports have (and their poke is weaker, as they don't have bonus Magic damage on their autoattacks..I am referring to poke that has no mana costs), he has a fair distance stun/gapclose through Death Sentence. He is the ONLY support capable of dragging an ally to him coupled with a fairly decent shield. He has an AoE displacer that hits both in front of and behind him and slows as well, in a forwards or backwards direction. He has the strongest slow in the game, tied with Zilean's max rank W, and once again, infinitely scaling Armor and AP meaning unlike most other supports, he gets both tanky and remains a threat throughout most of the game.

doiminat0r36002 votes

Do me a favor and DONT QUOTE THE PREVIOUS POST PLEASE. YOU DONT HIT QUOTE, YOU HIT REPLY. Thank you.

Now, Zilean's stun isnt less reliable because it has a lower cooldown + WAY more damage. Lux is considered a support by Riot. So I can bring her up. Nasus isnt a support. I never said he was. I was just bringing up that nobody complains that he is able to get 3 extra damage on his Q when he kills a minion because of it. Thresh can do alot. But so can other champions. Janna can stop people from dashing. She can also engage and disengage.

Thresh doesnt bring free poke. His poke is an auto attack. And it has a charge up as well. If he hasnt auto attacked in a while, you might wanna avoid him. Orianna has magic damage per auto attack, and yes, she is a support deemed by Riot. His gapcloser doesnt apply to his entire team, just him. He isnt the only support capable of shielding his carry. His shield is also WEAK. Really really weak. 220 damage is the shield's worth. Most other supports give a much stronger shield and offer a better peel potential that doesnt require a meat wall. Yes he has a displacer, but it's not that strong of a displacer. It doesnt move you very much. The only issue is if youre chasing him. Then "OH NO! YOU GET SLOWED, BIG DEAL!" He might have the strongest slow in the game but you shouldnt be complaining about a 2 second slow ultimate. It's an ultimate, meaning it has a high cooldown. Not to mention that it has to be cast on top of thresh. And it covers only a small area. Youre acting like he blocks off an entire lane or something when in fact the best he can do is block off an area the entrance to dragon or baron with it. You can say its infinite scaling but the fact is that most games are over by the time he naturally reaches around 150 armor and 75 AD (without runes/masteries/items/etc.). He is a tank, of course he is gonna be tanky and a threat. Thats like complaining about singed or tryndamere because theyre constantly a threat although they are only farming and keeping their minions pushed to your tower.

Vesper1172 votes

The 'free armour' used to be a thing, now he more or less just ends up with base levels of armour since it doesn't scale per level unless the game drags on long enough, that aspect of his passive was nerfed a good while ago.

Ratbert6 votes

Blitz pull isn't better, it's a longer distance displace, but doesn't come with a stun, a cd reduction on hit, a tiny mana cost in comparison, a shorter cd, and a free engage too. His knockup is worse by virtue of not slowing and being single target, and not giving him a random passive that makes your autos do extra damage. His silence is 0.5 seconds, and is one of the shortest ccs in the game. He is rarely, if ever built ap and does not have the stats souls give thresh. Don't forget blitz is literally a useless meatbag if you can dodge q's.

Veigar's stun has a massive delay and provides a wider area to maneuvre in. He also can't displace you into it with his other skills. It's also his only cc and is almost absolutely necessary for his w.

Annie has a funny range and only one stun, but is otherwise strong. Do i need to point out how thresh having a stun and a knockup essentially provides a huge stun on one person?

Ekko is Ekko.

Lantern gives everyone free mobility and get out of jail free if thresh knows how to actually aim.

Lets not forget, none of the people you mentioned are tanks or have sustain, so it's not exactly a surprise they hurt more. Blitz and veigar stuns are just as hard if not harder than thresh's combo.

chipndip13 votes

All pulls stun while the enemy is being pulled, and Blitz's pull can literally pull anyone right into his team for the mobbing. I'm more afraid of Blitz's faster, safer, longer hook than Thresh's slower hook. The reason why Thresh is better is because he's too well rounded, not because he's better at any one job than anyone else.

Phife1 votes

you can jump out of a blitz hook due to poor coding with ezreal E / trist W....etc. different champion mechanic jumps.

But thresh's hook stuns on hit.

doiminat0r36001 votes

Doesnt help that his E also stuns you and knocks you up. Then when you land you have a silence + damage to deal with and survive. Then you get pulled again because its been on cooldown for 4-6 seconds.

Phife4 votes
  • First things first, blitzcrank hook his a 20-16 second cd at max rank. Thresh's hook is a 20-12s CD at max rank and gets lowered by 3 seconds if you land it on anything.

  • Next, you're comparing blitz's 1 man knock up to threshs HUGE aoe knock up / knock back + slow...

  • And last but not least, Blitz does have a silence but it only lasts .5 seconds! How is this even an argument point?

Sassmast3r6 votes

As frustrating as it can be for Thresh to land both his hook and flay and literally not be able to click anything whatsoever while you're being flayed, I have to say that the only thing that genuinely pisses me off about this champion is the method in which many people play him. I'm so sick of this stupid-ass strategy that I see numerous Thresh' using, where they will sit in a bush, wait until you walk close enough, hit you with their ridiculous damage E passive, and then walk back into the bush, knowing you can't do anything about catching them off guard because they can just Hook and Flay you. Seriously, the most frustrating strategy I've ever seen in a champion comes from Thresh. Sitting in a bush like a little bitch and throwing an E at you, then walking back in and waiting, all while his ADC can farm and not worry about me OR my support getting anywhere near his ADC is an absolute nightmare. Otherwise Thresh doesn't anger me as much, it's just when I see these few Thresh' supports that do this I want to scream.

Aspynn3 votes

Sounds like you need to find a support duo buddy. If your supports can't do anything to a thresh or his ADC for walking forward to attack you or them then they're doing something wrong. It's annoying and it's bullshit, but really other than that thresh has no poke. I don't really think he should, because no other all in supports do, but whatever, his kit is overloaded as fuck.

Sassmast3r2 votes

I'm actually a support main myself lol. I tend to use Nami/Karma. Any advice you could give me against Thresh? With you saying that, now I believe it may be my fault that I haven't been able to fight him properly, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! :D

ZylotheWolfbane6 votes

I don't play support too much, but judging on your champion choices that you play, you're actually fairly well off against Thresh. If all he does is sit in the bush, then as Karma or Nami you can throw stuff into the bush. Karma can Q him all day and drain his health fairly quick, since you out range his autos. Nami, if you catch him in a bubble you can actually get some good damage on him, and depending on your ADC might even get a kill from a single lucky bubble.

The other thing would be to play closer to the river, to force him into either waiting till you push up to try and harass (In which case you have a better chance of catching him if he stays in the bush) or he has to leave the bush to try and harass. Advise your ADC to do the same, and as long as you keep river well-warded to avoid junglers, you should be able to avoid most of the harass. Ward a bit deeper into river/enemy blue territory when doing this to get a better early warning about enemy junglers, or roaming mids. Also, the other option is to just stay close to the bushes in lane, and just keep them warded constantly so you can just harass/catch him anytime he tries to pull that. If he keeps it up enough you can probably snag a few kills when he things there's no ward.

Also, if you have a Vayne ADC, Thresh is basically dead. The bushes are so close to the wall, if she can see him, she could easily get a tumble and pin him against the wall for a ton of free damage.

Sassmast3r2 votes

Thank you so much for this advice!!! As Karma, I do exactly what you said; I spam Q in the bush until he's forced out of it. Sometimes it doesn't work since my Q doesn't do enough damage, but I will try focusing on my Q versus my E next time I fight one. As Nami it's much harder due to how squishy she is, and since her Q is a little bit expensive, so sometimes I will miss the Q and then get grabbed, but I will definitely do my best to practice this. Once again, thank you!!! And I will most definitely try fighting closer towards the river; this sounds like it would help alot.

ZylotheWolfbane4 votes

I definately wouldn't say to spam Nami bubbles into the bush, that gets way too mana costly and will leave you oom when you need it most, but every now and then tossing one in if you think you know he's there can turn what he thought would be good harass, into him taking a bunch of damage. Keep an eye on him when you can, and if you have a decent amount of mana, and think he's in the bush, you can try to catch him as long as your ADC is near to help out. It's definitely a risk vs. reward thing. More advice for Nami would be, don't be as afraid of trading here and there, keep in mind that Nami does have the ability to heal, which makes it much easier to come out on top of close trades if you and your ADC know how to trade decently. Even if you go even in a trade, that means you win, because Nami can help her and her ADC heal up, while Thresh can only hit Targon stacks for heals, which isn't nearly as much as Nami can do.

Anyway, hope it helps.

Shrek Luigi1 votes

item 3165 item 3504 Both of these give AP, CDR and mana regeneration. I almost always pick these 2 items early on because Karma has a ton of synergy with them. You may find them useful too if you find your damage is too low.

Another thing to consider is your pages, you need magic pen and scaling AP to do the insane damage you see support karma's doing midgame. A lot of people might say to run AP flats but her scaling really isn't all that great and the base damage is already pretty decent, so there's really no need.

Sassmast3r1 votes

I'm always hesitant to get Ardent Censer nowadays, primarily due to the lack of AP it provides for ME. Call me selfish, but as Karma I would much rather be able to spam and do lots of damage with my Q, versus having less damage on that but being able to assist my ADC with it's amazing ass passive. But yes, I will definitely try it regardless, hope it helps my ADC out enough. When it comes to Morello I've always built that on Karma myself, but you see, the way I play her is that I ALWAYS go for Liandry's Torment as the first item for her when I support, so that I still have enough AP to inflict massive damage with my Q, but lets say my ADC doesn't realize I'm engaging with my W, I have enough health to at least make it out alive when it's a failed engagement. Would you recommend me choosing those two items above Liandry's? Even with the upcoming AP itemization changes?

OH, and when it comes to my rune pages, this is what I currently have for all of my supports (works best on Nami though :P). Should I really shift to more offensive runes for support? I've always been hesitant to do that, but maybe it would work out better in the long run?
