Is vel'koz's ult confusing for anyone else?

To me, especially with the Arclight skin, it seems like the ult's range is shorter than it really is. So it looks like I'm out of range and then 3/4 of my hp is gone because I was actually in range. Anyone else notice this or do I need to get my eyes checked?

You just assume you are out because you are far away. The particles aren't the problem.
