This whole "Fill = Support" thing --- it's not true, half of the time

That is, the half of the time that you're playing unranked draft.

When I'm playing draft, I've:

  • Gotten mid as fill
  • Gotten top as fill
  • Gotten mid with support primary mid secondary

The second you go into ranked, it's 100% true. Not only is it true, but in the 3* ranked lobbies I've joined this season, I've waited for a combined 1 second in queue.

######*Yes, I know it's a tiny sample size. I would not feel comfortable drawing conclusions from my own experiences alone, but I've also seen experiences just like my own plastered all over Boards.

#What's the point?

People play draft to have fun or to practice. People play ranked to win. Why are people playing support in draft but not ranked? It's because people don't feel like they can carry from the support role. (or at least, they can't hard carry).

Does the support role need buffs? I'm not sure. Personally, I think supports can be impactful and indeed hard carry, but sometimes their power isn't quite as felt as other roles. Maybe QoL improvements, post game stats like damage shielded/healed. Maybe we as a community need to change our attitude towards supports, and just recognize their contributions. Supports don't suffer any worse than other roles for this, but because their impact is sometimes less visible, they might need it more.

The support role needs a complete overhaul.

People do not play supports as often in soloqueue ranked because the itemization is problematic, you have little income, everyone else is level 12+ and you just hit level 11. Supports in soloqueue are also known as ward slaves.

You can make a good team great, or an okay team good, but you can't redeem a bad team's performance like hard carry roles can. It's amazing when you sync up with a team, but that rarely happens in ranked. It's more likely to happen in normals.
