So, @Fearless qhat we gonna do with Sona?

Hey there, yes this is again another thread from a Sona main, who complains about her rework. Sona is right now in an umcomfortable spot, being extremly weak, very squishy, and relies way too much on her ultimate ability right now. Her heal is too weak, her poke doesn't scratch that much anymore, and get outscaled by Nami, who does everything what Sona can, just better. Fearless, I am really disappointed with ignoring her problems right now, because she is not need for buffs, but needs a better kit than the current one. I know you wanted to keep her personality as "aura" champion, she did change, but instead of supporting, she feels now way weaker, and still can't defend herself. Always when I play her, I need at least one team mate next to me, so I have at least someone, who can protect me, if I am placing wards or clearing wards. Because Sona is being a easy target to kill, enemies won't think again and try to kill you, because you are just a oversized minion who can't peel them away. Sonas only reliable cc is her ultimate and her e powerchord, but if you are getting chased, its pretty risky to put an powerchord on an enemy, and wasting your ult for an disengage is also pretty risky, since the enemy team would know, that it would be their chance to engage, since your team lost an big part of cc. Yeah you could also just try to run away, and die, giving the enemy more gold, and also some seconds for the enemy to engage, meaning, whatever you would do, Sona has to survive so she can be any useful.

I honestly was excited as Sona fan for the rework, to turn Sona into a more interactive champion, hoping that her auras would also debuff the enemy or something similar, yet jt was disappointing that Sona recieved those weird auras, and tuning her a bit down. Considering that her powerchord was the only source of damage, the q powercord nerf was probably the one that did hit her the most. her other chords remained unchanged, and that was very disappointing too.

With her most recent nerfs, she became even weaker, and feels more unpleasing to play, and has less impact on teamfights, except her ultimate ability, wich needs most the time a well timed flash, otherwise she can't go through the frontline or position herself right.

The most of us probably saw the real numbers of Sonas abilities, and most do really know that shes not as strong as the most (aram) players say, and people who like the rework and say its op, sadly i can't agree with, I play mostly kassadin and leblanc, and they have more burst than a Sona powerchord.. yeah it has not much counterplay as Zileans bombs, but it also doesn't has those incredible high scalings as his bombs.

tl;dr - Sona is weak, gets outscaled by nearly every support, and is still in need of a better kit.

Hey guys guess what? They reducing sona blue power cord from doing 50% bonus dmg to 40%! Ggwp! Sona gets nerfed again!

Personally, I'm disgusted by the fact Fearless removed Sona's auras, then replaced them with 1-off effects and blatantly lied to us calling them "auras." By that backwards logic, all AoE abilities are "auras." GG guys, Katarina's ult is an "aura," Akali's smoke cloud is an "aura," Fizz's shark is an "aura." Like hell they are, Riot. I'm not interested in buying a bridge.

Sona is still really strong (in my opinion), she's just not the monsterbeast bottom lane she was before. I think the rework was much better for Sona's lategame (the ms aura is better so better initiate, the slow/damage reduction for her W/E power chords is great, the mass shields on a low-ish cd...)

The main issue is that Sona's early game is no longer busted, and so her laning phase got hit. I think this is a small price to pay for being a more impactful support in general, but I see a lot of complaints about the kit. I'd like to point out that Sona is also one of the supports that outscales most of the other supports with item (she has 6 AP ratios, Nami has 7, and they're the two primary supports with the most/best AP ratios, iirc).

The only problem I see with Sona's kit right now is that it requires too many levels. For the shield on her W to be useful, it needs to be maxed - but for her poke you need to max Q. That's the primary issue I see with Sona right now - her kit doesn't really shine until her Q and W are both maxed.

i really like where sona is at, i am not a sona main but i've played her before and after the rework and i am still satisfied with how much she can carry.

She's not underpowered, but the most recent changes on the pbe have even more nerfs for her; and this time they're hitting her poke. The rework made her laning a lot harder (though her late game may be better post rework), which is a strength she's supposed to have.

To be honest, most of the comments about Sona remind me of the comments about Cass. It isn't that you think she isn't strong, it's that you don't like her new identity and play patterns. If you can explain why you think a different kit/identity/play pattern would be healthier, then you may be able to get some attention from Riot, but I think it's misleading to say that she needs buffs. This does not seem to be the experience of most players.

To be honest, I think Sona suffers from the fact that her kit is pretty simple. This doesn't mean that she's easy to play or anything, but it just means that an average player can leverage a large portion of her power, whereas with some other champions an average player is going to have a harder time using the champion to his or her full potential. I saw that someone on this thread was comparing Sona to Nami. Nami has a skill shot that is notoriously tough to hit. Sona doesn't have anything like that in her kit. When her abilities are all easy to consistently hit, they can't be as strong or else the champion will significantly outperform less consistent champions.

ushe needs one, because she lacks of defense power. her previous w ahra gave her much stronger sustain, and helped her surviving chases and etc. now she has her powerchords left, being her only way of escape/survive mechanism, since her e is on a incredible long cooldown. I probably wish for a kit that would interact with allies and enemies at the same time, like lulus w and e. from her lore, shes described as wonderchild who plays melodies, and can manipulate the enotions of those, who listen to her music, wich would make a kit with multiple interactions better than her current one.

tldr; sona has no escapes or spells that allow her to survive except her ultimate.

So far the only people I see crying about nerfs are sona mains. Even leblanc players cried less when she got nerfed at 45% winrate. This is almost on par with the Lee sin QQ when they finally decided to attempt to nerf him. It's a good thing riot doesnt care about forum circlejerking and blatant lies or else sona would be getting buffs after she hit her 60% winrate as the sona mains would still complain she is too weak. Is 53% winrate not enough?

Why do people keep thinking winrates are concrete information about a champions strength? Leona has almost 3 times Sona's pickrate, while having only .08% less of a winrate, better nerf her too, right?

Yes, Leblanc was nerfed even though she had a low winrate, and she deserved it, too. Getting bursted while being unable to retaliate wasn't exactly healthy for midlane.

It has nothing to do with winrate; Sona could have a 40% winrate, but if I felt she was as impactful as Nami then I wouldn't care.

So leblanc deserved her nerfs because you dont play her but sona doesnt because you play her. Yeah thats pretty much what ive gotten from every sona thread on the boards so I didnt expect much difference here. Sona is actually more impactful than nami considering all levels of play. Nami is only more effective in the higher levels of skill and she should be since she has to do more work than sona does.

Winrate is a lot better to use since its actual data. Sona players claiming she is weak have their only basis being great nami players beat her when statistics show sona wins more. There is a reason the easier champ that is overall stronger is getting nerfed. If sona was = to nami with her simplistic playstyle she would be broken. Your sona vision is gonna prevent you from seeing this but luckily riot doesnt balance based on defense squads. TY riot.

My personal stance (as someone who likes Sona but prefers several supports to her) is that ban rate is the best data. Win rate is definitely worth using - after all, while it's easy to say "ignore" it you don't really want to see a Sona with 60% win rate. But it's also worth noting that Sona is banned in less than 1% of games. People clearly don't have a problem facing her even if she wins a lot of games, so why should Riot make it easier to face her and harder to play her? She's also ignored completely in competitive games. That sort of stuff is worth taking into account, you can't rely solely on win rate.

Some mains will say that only Sona mains play her and that's why her win rate is strong. I don't really agree on that, her play rate isn't "everyone thinks she's freelo" high like Lee Sin but 9% is above average. A support whose win rate I think is inflated by a low play rate would be Zyra. But I think her win rate is primarily because her skill floor is quite low, which makes her forgiving in lower elo. Also, people just don't know how to counter poke in lower elo. Everyone gets hit by a Sona Q and then retreats when that is the exact time she becomes least threatening.

Sona's a bit weird because the worse the players are the better she is. The difference between an average Sona and a good Sona is quite small, because her skill floor is low. On the other hand, the difference between a good Sona and great Sona is actually quite high because of small mechanics like positioning which are now so important to her. But a great Sona will do better with another support.

I think she needs to be re-reworked. Make it so her skill floor is a tad higher, and in exchange give her a bit more power. But I'm not sure how they'd to that.

win rates should have some bearing on a champions strength. I don't see how win rate should just be excluded from debating whether a champion is strong or not. yes it's not all of the evidence to need to classify the champion as op or up but it should have some bearing on whether a champion is where is it supposed to be.

Yes, I understand that, but a lot of people look at Sona's and automatically want nerfs. I'm saying they gloss over the winrates and pickrates of other support champions.

Sightless661 votes

They should be included, but there needs to be context. For example, a champion like Yasuo should have a somewhat low win rate because he is very unforgiving if you are bad with him, and a lot of people will fail with him if they just pick him up every once in a while. That lowers the winrate On the other hand Sona is a very easy champion to play with some competence. It's very easy to have some impact on her even if you only play her once a year. We should expect this to inflate her winrate.

I honestly feel sona is in a really good spot. Really good ult for late game. Strong poke and sustain for the early game. Don't understand why people are crying about her. If she ever needs a buff they could bump the shield by a couple of points.

Lelefski3 votes

Her ult is actually not that great late game when people start building QSS/Banshees.

Pika3101 votes

Nothing is more disheartening for a Sona player than to see 5+ QSS/Banshee on the enemy team. The R-bot is downgraded to a ward bot.

I agree that the rework didn't help that much really. Not sure what they can do really though, auras are at Sona's core and they don't like the hidden power that those give. Also auras can be really underwhelming if it's only 1 ally around, or brokenly powerful if there are 4 allies nearby. So I think they're just gonna have to fix her identity before they can fix her problems. Then on top of the aura problem, throw on her ult, which is really strong, and it's just a nearly impossible to balance kit.

Sona has always been yoyo-ing between really underpowered and overpowered, just by the nature of her kit. They'll give her needed buffs, then tear her down soon after when they realize that they gave her too much.

It Is I Emoto6 votes

yeah, her auras are right now harder to balance than her previous stances. fearless had the chance to improve it, but he just gave her a kit thats way too hard to balance right now for riots eyes.. we had alot of suggestions here, though no rioted was respondkng t9 it. the cass rework was also quite unpleasing for cass mains, yet stashe kept having track of them, what is actually nice from them, yet fearless doesnt do anything for those who are unpleased with Sonas current kit. I know that fearless is reworking right now the jungle, but Sona really needs a change for now.

Leaf of the lake1 votes

I love her current kit, but she just doesn't feel impactful enough lategame without a ton of AP, and she can't go mid due to lack of waveclear. To me, her identity is that of an AP carry "support" whose purpose is to burst down squishy champs while providing some utility. If you get ahead in lane and get to build some AP, she does this job just fine, and can often end up doing more damage than the midlaner. Problem is, it's very snowball reliant, and if you don't snowball, you don't provide the same utility as other supports. Hell, orianna can burst squishies and provide nearly the same utility, but she can actually go mid due to having true waveclear.

It Is I Emoto2 votes

yeah, her prework allowed her to go with some ap, and still doing enough damage as annie or other burst mages, maybe even less, but she was not being abused in mid lane, and had of course horrible wave clear. I really wish that she would be actually viable as mage, since its her seccond role.. yet wifhbmost of her nerfs, they are pushing sona out of viability, and she gets overshadowed by other supports. the biggest problem right now is, thatbshs can't defend herself, without having at least one ally around. Warding becomes as a Sona player really risky, because you are just a oversized mage minion.. yeah ap sona can hurt, but if you have a lich bane, you can probably just do 50 ~ 75% damage, and against bruisers/tanks even less.

sadly, i got quite often get caught as sona in the jungle, as i was warding importantbobjecives like drag or baron. If you as Sona has nobody to follow up, then you are less impactful than a minion. So it usually goes "Sona go ward" "k" wards blue as enemy jungler was counter jungling "an ally has been slain"

like.. always. yeah i can flash, but then you are loosing an important engage spell and if you die, fjen the enemy team knows that its their chance to engage. same if you will use your ult :/

Sona is still overbearing in duo lane... In many matchups.

The only engaging thing about playing Sona is landing a good ult and making correct use of your powerchords. Otherwise, you're either budgeting your mana early game or just spamming qwe, qwe, qwe late game. You don't even need to target anyone or anything (The AoE effects are always coming from the same place)!

Aura's are terribly hard to balance around, I'm sure. Taric was nerfed for the same reason, though he's not gotten any sort of update to compensate. QQ

She can be very irrelevant and seem very weak on her own, but that's just not the case. She's generally buff as hell at what she does, and that's being a ranged support with tons of sustain and poke/trade power. If anything, she's a great support to start with before playing anyone else with more mechanics. She's replaced soraka in that aspect, as soraka now takes much more skill to be most effective imho.

So, basically.... Consider a new main.

Me? I main everything.

appearantly, sona exceels at supporting, except herself. thats what im understanding by what you are saying. Yeah, Janna and Nami might have less supporting power, but they have abilities to defend themselfs, but Sona not. and you see sona being as "practice" support, what is probably the worst rhing on her right now, because she was before her rework a decent to great pick for a balanced team, if they lacked of certain stats, what was really great. being around as Sona was as important as her ult, now her ult is the only reason to be picked, because its still the greatest thing the game (thanks fearless didnt touched it).

Sona seems overbearing because things that are popular right now are Janna, Thresh, and Morg. Pick Leona against a Sona and watch her cry the second your Zenith Blade lands.
