Nearly a decade Later - can we fix this now?

Goju··57 votes·15,606 views

League of Legends came out in 2009 - it is almost 10 years later, Riot is no longer a small company that is just doing what it can for its fans. In 2009 they sought to create a company that continuously improves on an already released game, instead of commencing development on a new one. And they have delivered in champions, Items, (on both sides of enjoyment and WTF riot) however, I am here to talk about something that has been IN the game since 2009, gotten NO love, and is still as buggy and broken as it was nearly a decade ago..** Death Recap **- I mean I cannot be the only player that when he dies and sees "Death Recap" in a game - checks it to see who is doing what type of damage so if i need to build mitigation against that type - Be it Armor, Magic Resist, both..

However Either True dmg is being given away in the mail with free samples of Tide by Noxus, or Riot needs to actually sit down and fix this death recap - or remove it completely and when you die just the words "Guess who killed you, we're not tellin" can come up on the screen.

Because too often , much too often for a 10 year old game, you see things like - _(These images were taken from Google - and not my own personal experience, however i have seen much the same in my own death recaps.) _ http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1432542711/LeagueWhatKillSelf3.jpg

or Warwick really decides to go to pound town

http://apollo-pbe-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1417483423314/Screen02.png

But its not just the champions as we all know. the Creeps tend to get upset now and then too, and call out the Hero of the Hour "Purple Melee Minon" http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1438823810/MinionDamage.jpg

Ok but seriously - no joke - the death recap is meant to be useful information on how you died, so if you desire to adjust a build accordingly you can - in its current stand the death recap is good for at best a laugh and at worst and string of curses. Because if these death recaps are "correct" someone needs to take a serious look at Warwirk and Rammus (haha)

Its time for you to actually give us a death recap - and not just a odd mix of numbers done to you in .09 seconds.

Thank you for your time

The issue is that this game is held together with twine and superglue and the death recap is so deeply embedded that fixing it would cause so many more issues then it's worth. Notice how they have that early league aesthetic because, even after multiple UI and map changes, Riot is too afraid of breaking the whole game to make it look nicer or actually work.

Mokuto Bunshi2 votes

Yes it would probably break everything if they didn't have a dedicated team and months to work on it. HOWEVER. Stats are very important (we even got a new stats tab for that in-client) EVEN MORE SO in-combat. Knowing your enemy DURING the fight, damage distribution and effects. Afraid or not it NEEDS to be done.

Shädäm1 votes

I dont think it would break anything. If they can work on reworking champions, and putting them into the game, they could just put a team of engineers to work on this.

Maybe if they stopped releasing a nem champ every second month, and reworking one every third month, they could actually work on glitches and elements like this one.

kagepaladin2 votes

I mean It probably would break alot of shit, hell Mordekaiser alone has a bug list over 300 book pages, that's a whole books worth, and they've known about them for YEARS and I do mean YEARS every year the mordemains get together and make a bug mega thread last year with was around 220 bugs with release of new runes/masteries it jumped upto 290...

with the "spaghetti code" as they called it, anything can happen

there have been numerous occasions where a patch changes something completely unrelated to a sudden new bug that happens on the live server

for instance, in whatever patch it was so long ago, suddenly every ability or attack launched from the brush was INVISIBLE

they banned players for using this exploit when they publicly announced it because they would have to shut down the game for extended periods of time in order to fix it

other instances include the store, game modes, champion bugs, etc, such as the xerath exploit which allowed xerath to damage everyone on the map at the same time

it's a whole web of crazy for no real reason

SugeMinPikk1 votes

That has nothing to do with whether or not it'd cause a domino effect of broken code. That's not how it works. Death recap is from a time when the devs were just doing it as a hobby.

Wtf are you talking? The game looks nice and the old aesthetic is intentional.

Meddler talked about that recently. Here's the quote.

"We could skip skins for a year and it wouldn't help us work on death recap - the issue there's what expertise is needed for each job. Skins are mainly artist dependent. Death Recap by contrast primarily needs engineer time. That means the trade offs we'd need to make for Death Recap work are things like working on client bugs, FPS optimization, enabling new features for game modes etc. Completely with you that Death Recap isn't in a good state, our conclusion's been that other work like that's going to improve people's experiences more (on average, certainly not for every given person) though."

It's almost like they can hire more people or something if they lack the manpower of a certain expertise to do everything in a timely fashion. shrug

EDIT: Downvotes? Come on... Are you telling me that it's not reasonable to expect they add more manpower if, for 10 years the team that could fix this was too busy with other stuff? Clearly if that's the case there's plenty of work to be done for additional employees.

Leetri2 votes

9 women doesn't give birth to a baby in 1 month. Riot has stated several times that "just hiring more people" doesn't necessarily make things go faster. First of all they'd have to find engineers that accepts the job, then they have to spend half/an entire year to teach them before they're ready to work for real. And during that time they have to pull engineers from other projects to teach them, meaning things would go even slower for potentially an entire year. More engineers might need more managers, so you gotta hire and teach those as well. And if you've ever worked for a bigger company you know they're really slow to do anything because changes have to go through a lot of people (too many chefs spoil the broth, if you will). On top of all that, we don't know if it's even possible for them to expand, they could be out of office spaces in their current office.

But it's been 10 years. Surely that's enough time to hire people and train them in? The solution to not having enough manpower is to get more manpower. That's really all there is to it. Yeah, training people takes manpower away from other stuff for a while, but not hiring more people will not magically fix the issue. This is what every business deals with, I don't know why game developers seem to get a pass on this from their fans.

Yeah, it's pretty absurd that it went this long with minimal attempts at fixing it, but as explained by Riot in their devblog tech-debt really makes it hard to go back and fix problems like this. Nobody really knows except the people actually paid to solve these kinds of problems in Riot, but say there's around five years of various changes stacked on top of the death recap (every single new champion, ability, updates to minions, etc), then it becomes harder and harder to go back and solve the root problem.

It's not like League is the only game with this problem. If you've ever played WoW you would find a plethora of bugs that have existed for many years which will likely never get fixed until they decide to make a WoW 2 or something along those lines.

Leetri1 votes

Exactly. People forget that this game was made by modders and amateurs over 10 years ago. It's a lasagna of spaghetti code, for all we know removing the current death recap will make Azir able to spawn turrets wherever he pleases again without cooldown whenever there's an Ashe on your team.

You don't fix tech debt by ignoring it though.

but they're a mult billion dollar company, I know just bringing in new coders isn't easy since they have to get used to the code but it's been 10 years, by now they could have hired like 10 people to have them be familiar with the code and try and fix it for a year so other shit doesn't have to suffer for it.

this all just seems like an excuse to me, the players shouldn't have to suffer just because riot coded the game in a horrible way apparently

My 10 cent on Tencent:

client bugs

They could have thought about that before even changing the client - the old one was for the most part stable.

FPS optimization

Again, the majority of optimization issues have arisen post-client change. And top-end rigs are still ignored in this.

enabling new features for game modes

I for one could be easily agreeing with NOT making stuff like Nexus Siege, Dark Star Singularity and Substructure 43 (PROJECT: Overcharge) if that meant getting a proper death recap.

Would be nice to have 5 "who killed you" slots so us tanks can see exactly what needs to be built.

Except the sources would be blue caster red buff, purple fighter duskblade, raptor baby's Infinity Edge, dragon's statikk shiv and Soraka's wish.

Soraka's so OP. Wish deals true damage and doesn't even have a cast time like Requiem!

Riot is no longer a small company that is just doing what it can for its fans.

They got big, slow, stupid and greedy. But they still try to use as tiniest teams when it comes to develop the game.

Stróc Dúnmharú2 votes

Imagine an in-game replay that you can watch, let's you turn the camera angle and put the game in slow motion, disable number pop ups from specific champions so you can isolate where the damage came from. AND... imagine being able to do it for longer than just "until you respawn". Don't tell me the technology doesn't exist, because it most certainly does.

Riot, come on, give us picture-in-picture player unique death replays so we can see what killed use and how.

it counts towards ardent censer btw, got hit with sona/soraka w's too many times and found out adc's ardent censer autos count as the healers damage in death recap

Terozu1 votes

What? No. A minion definetly killed me with Soraka's ult for 1000 true damage despite Soraka not being in that game.

What are you talking about.

And are you implying Nidalee is unable to passively deal damage that consists of 1's trailing off the screen with no source?

They were about to fix it, but then they determined resources for it were at odds with Nexus Blitz, and they refused to delay that. So now it's back to probably never.

I mean tbh I agree, I don't even look at death recap anymore, haven't in a long time and with the death timers as they are I just browse reddit on my phone or play around with my music instead of looking at recap.

1008 damage in 11,52 seconds

I see what you did there.

[slayer-jinx-wink]

On a serious note: Yes, I also want details on what happened. Not just some numbers for the sake of giving me numbers - I want the how (exact ability details and combos), when (timestamps), and a short text telling me what I can do to improve based on the various amounts of damage i took.

Goju1 votes

First - wow, in a way I am happy to know its not just me - but in a way I am saddened at the state of it ..

And I agree that yes with the huge availability of tools out there now, (like that one i saw on youtube that lets you see who on the other team has a low W/L % with the champ they are playing (this is just cheating in my view) - death recap is not high on the "to do list"

And yes, maybe the game is held together with string and duct-tape and McGyver skill - but I mean put some of it toward a load-out that tells you how you died - for the the love of god someone get on the True dmg (unrelated note) -

I thank you all for posting and agreeing that for tanks, or support, which is what i normally play knowing how you died -(by what damage type, who was dealing X damage of what type) is actually what your supposed to do (at least i thought) to build accordingly and mitigate for your team-mates -

Granted its less so now with the influx of Crit / True Dmg / %Max HP dmg, / %Max HP True dmg - since really your only hope against Velkoz Vayne Fiora MasterYi --(wow this list gets long fast) is hope for a bad player, or run like hell, because mitigation is no longer a factor - they are dealling 100% of whatever they want to you, (hope you got a warmogs)

Still , a man can dream - and again thank you all for responding.

Whatever they do to it, I really hope they keep the visuals the same. It is the only last remnant of the game reminding me of the good old times of yesteryear and looks runic and archaic.
