PSA: To those whining about placing lower in Season 6

Happy Jack··4 votes·610 views

Consider the NBA.

After the season is over, every team is reset. No one retains seeding from previous season.

Literally every pro-sport is like this.

According to your complaining logic, if a player was Plat in Season 2, they should never fall below that... ever.

What 'you' are really advocating for is removing Ranked Seasons all together.

The grind is the fun. Stop expecting to have things handed to you and get better.

Another person missing the problem entirely

The problem isn't people are being placed lower than what they ended the season at. The problem is people with winning records are being placed lower than what a soft reset or hard reset would take them to.

Sure, placement matches should be more transparent so players see the cause / effect of a win or loss.

But don't joke. Overwhelming players are complaining about being placed lower... they are not complaining about transparency.

Edit: Also, MMR is hidden... they don't know what the soft reset put them at because they don't truly know where they were.

Yes, lower than they should be placed, not lower than they were.

Someone who was silver or gold and goes 9-1 should not be placed in bronze 5. I have seen myriad cases where this happened, and I can't even imagine how many more times it happened that I didn't see.

You assume too much.

How does the player know where they "should" be placed when a ranking does not coincide with MMR?

A player in any Tier can have an MMR several divisions lower than what thier Rank represents.

Example: Player ends season at Gold 4. Really though, their MMR is Silver 1/2 and the reset puts them in Bronze 1/2. Completely fair.

Placements are not based on Rank, it's MMR. Placement matches don't move the needle that much after the reset.

It doesn't go along with it perfectly, but it does follow it. It's certainly possible for a bronze player to have a higher MMR than a plat player, but it's extremely unlikely.

For your example, the starting point is silver 4, not bronze 5. Going down to bronze from silver 1/2 is fine enough if the player goes fairly negative in placement matches. It's not OK if the player goes slightly negative, even, or positive.

MMR might be hidden but if you are earning and losing about the same amount of LP while being in Gold+ and then all of a sudden you get placed in bronze even though you won most of your placement matches (if not every single one) then what is the point of placement matches in the first place? just give us our rank immediately instead of making us believe that placement matches matter in the slightest. What is the point of going 8-2 if you are going to end up bronze 5 anyways? what is the point of being in Plat and then all of a sudden being dropped to Silver? and not only that now you are facing other Silver placed people who are either true silvers that were ranked for the very first time or gold players who were also put in Silver (if they miraculously avoided being placed on bronze). You aren't playing against opponents of similar strength, it's a gamble on whether you get a lucky streak of having previously high ranked players in your team and having poor bastards that weren't ranked as high (or are the first being ranked at all) or vice-versa.

resets do nothing but screw up matchmaking (which isn't the greatest to begin with). That is the main reason they are mad. Now you have gold players playing with or against bronze/silver players and just stomping them or you can have silver players playing against plats that were dropped to silver because of the reset. Let's not forget about how plat is now pretty everything that were in diamond+ all in one. It doesn't make for good competition at all

Not true. Everyone was soft reset. You're playing against the same players who were in your MMR before... Because they were reset too.

Exception: Players waiting weeks / months to play ranked will not be playing against their previous MMR opponents as the ranked ladder has shifted.

players who just got ranked for the first time did not get soft reset. Also your MMR is much closer to people below or above your rank. The difference isn't that great. If you are placed in Silver you are going to play against others who were also placed in Silver or have managed to climb to Silver. Soft reset doesn't help anyone since not everyone has the same playing time so now you have those who are able to play multiple games a day climbing relatively fast since they are playing against similar opponents then you have those who play maybe a game or two a day (if not less) and they will start playing against lower ranked opponents (and higher if they also don't play as much) and then you have those who just take a break for a little while who are just pretty much guaranteed to face easier opponents.

I will say it again, resets do nothing but screw up matchmaking. Not everyone will climb back to where they were at the same speeds due to how much they are able to play, the teams they get into and many other things. You can be a plat player but since you decided to take a small break guess what? now you are playing against Silver players and possibly other plat/gold players that also took a break. So now Silver true players are essentially screwed and can do nothing but hope that their team has more "better" players than the enemies. The same can be said about every single other division. You play instantly and quite often? great, enjoy your decent matchmaking! you can't play often or are planning to take a break of the game for a little while? well too bad! i hope you enjoy facing terrible matchmaking since now it's a gamble about which team has more "better players"

The difference is that sports teams are more than just one single person.

There's no real reason placements should drop you more than twice the amount you could lose from losing 10 games in a row.

That difference is meaningless. Even in individual sports people are reset at the end of a season (wrestling, swimming, track/field etc...)

Sure there's a reason for a soft reset. Same reason there is a hard reset in EVERY other sport.

I don't know anything about sports, so I don't know what you're saying at all. Do other sports even have global rankings? What does a reset or a rank even mean in that context?

I will that the difference between a team's rank and an individual's rank is not meaningless. It's silly to even suggest that. Sports teams are a combination of tens of the individual players and their staff, both of which receive major changes at the end of every season. One single person isn't going to see a major change in their competitive level in one week like that. You don't suddenly lose your mechanics and go from the top 10% in the game to the 40th percentile.
