We need to talk about mobility and their trade-offs

WARNING: This is a QQ post about Kalista .

When you give an ADC champion high sustain damage, high mobility, and utility/cc, I don't think you get to say that their trade off should be a lack of burst damage. Isn't that how ADCs are defined? When you decide to give someone burst, such as Lucian , you take something away; such as his sustain, range, and giving him a mana-hungry E until you max it. Riot was doing a good job in curbing mobile ADCs. Corki has a more expensive W, and Tristana has a long cooldown on her W.

Looking at RekSai , she's labeled as a pure fighter. She has high sustained, decent mobility and knock-up, should her only weakness be that she can't burst? Isn't that what fighters are supposed to lack? To be fair, she's also very vulnerable, even when building tank, so I suppose she's in a better spot.

Then we get to mobile mages. You have Ahri, the mage/assassin who trades mage burst and safety for mobility and an assassin-like playstyle. Azir on the other hand, trades mage burst for sustained and mobility.

These playstyles break the mold for their roles, without "entirely" ruining things for others. I'm not entirely saying Kalista ruins ADC viability, but Riot needs to think more carefully the next time they make a mobile champion. Even when you tack on a weakness, there is such a thing as too much strength.

Well other than ahri no longer having that playstyle, I agree. Kalista is basically kassadin 2.0, except AD, and not hyper mana gated. (comparing her to Kass for her high mobility, and good burst. Kass is actually somewhat balanced, just every single other assassin was nerfed, a la Zed.)

Kalista doesn't just trade off burst, she also trades off overall DPS. Her DPS is right at the level of utility-based adcs. For all her mobility, she basically does a bit more damage than Ashe or Sivir. A lack of a steroid mean she doesn't scale that well into late game, and she's overly reliant on her Soulbound for help. If something happens to that Soulbound, a good chunk of her damage is gone.

For Rek'sai, her weakness is her scalings. She has pretty decent bases, but unless she invests fully in AD, she won't be a threat late game. And if she goes full damage, she won't be a threat anyway because she'll die in a heartbeat.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. Kalista does have some burst, but it's only burst you can really use at the end of a fight, rather than the start. Because of it, she has to stick to her opponent no matter what happens, which is why she has her perma-dash in the first place (she really needs to kite her targets, otherwise she either misses a lot of damage or dies). RekSai does scale pretty well into the late game even when building tanky, and has a ton of mobility on top of a lot of other tools (great DPS, sustain, utility and poke), but a lot of her power, including her mobility, is locked out to her when she's trying to fight, during which she's fairly kiteable. She can't deal a lot of damage when mobile, or move very fast when fighting.

I think the main balancing point of mobility is that champions with gapclosers need to use them if they want to function at their best, and not simply have them around as an extra thing to use if things get hairy. Lucian needs his mobility because he's a close-ranged marksman who needs to get up close and lock onto his targets for decent periods of time, and Tristana needs a gapcloser for similar reasons (her new E forces her to land as many consecutive autoattacks as possible on her target, no matter where they travel). Corki isn't quite there yet, but his gapcloser does help him stay in range for his E (it's also on a long enough cooldown and a high enough cost to not be that abusive). LeeSin , however, can go entire fights without using Safeguard's dash (he can even cancel the dash to just use the shield), and has no real deficiency in his kit that forces him to use his gapclosers, which is why his mobility often feels irritating to deal with. If he had a serious, exploitable weakness that required him to use both his Q and W dashes, then he'd be fine.

Going back to Kalista , while I agree that her kiting is often very... intense, I think it's just evidence of a larger problem, rather than the main issue itself. As frustrating as she can be, melee champions like Maokai , Sion and even Pantheon can handle her (plus really recent champions like Rek'Sai and Mega Gnar), because their kit still allows them to do useful stuff even when they get kited super-hard, with or without mobility. On the other hand, champions like XinZhao or Darius get hard-countered because they're built in such a way that they're either too good if they can reach their target, or literally useless if they get kited (pre-rework Sion would also suffer from the same problem if he were still around). Ranged champions can already deal with kiting thanks to their range and overall reach, but a lot of melee champions just don't have the proper tools to deal with kite champions at all, which is why a lot of them do really poorly against the absolute best kiter in the game.

Just to jump in on the Darius issue as a side note.

Immobile melee champions are literally the hardest champions in the game to balance. You have to give them high strengths to make up for being as mobile as a rock (Malphite say what?), but it also means they tend to shred anything in their range. Darius is a PERFECT example of this. If you can kite him, you're solid. If you're caught, you're probably screwed.
