State of Starting Mana Items

So a few people complain that item 3165 is an OP item right now. That may be true, but at the moment there really aren't many options for mages in terms of starting mana items. That means that it is easier to make morelonomicon a "one size fits all" item until we have some choices. The closest thing is item 3027 which a few close range mages may pick up.

I propose that there ought to be at least three mana items that mages could use as their first item.

> 1. Book of cool Down This item is aimed at utility mages, but mages with low cool downs will like it too. It gives high mana, a decent ammount of ability power, and alot of cool down reduction. It could have less mana, and instead have a mana regeneration effect since these mages are likely to be casting more often. 450-500 mana 80 ability power 20 cool down reduction

> 2. Rod of Health This item is for mid and melee range mages that have to get close to the opponent. The catalyst of aeons effect could be appropriate here. 400 Health 400 mana 70 ability power 10% cool down reduction

>3. Ring of Murder This item is for burst mages and assassins. It provides significantly more killing potential than the other items, but doesn't have as much mana or sustainability. By bonus damage effect, I mean something like ludens echo burst or hextech revolver's magic bolt: something that adds damage to the innitial burst. 300-350 mana 100 ability power 10 cool down reduction small bonus damage effect

Now of course these numbers are probably off, as I'm not a professional game designer nor have I tested them but the intention is to have three mana items, each of which can be chosen for utility, defense, or damage. Lastly, one could possibly build one of the other items instead of their normal mana item as a counter build against their opponent. (for example xerath buying rod of health against zed) I also could see an issue arrising if starting mana items are indipendantly powerful enough that you can start stacking them in your build, much like a item 3027 or item 3040 user may build a item 3165 at some point.

What kind of mana items do you think mages need? Is it better to just let Morelo be the default, or is it worth creating items for different classes of mages? Or perhaps the current items like item 3027 item 3070 and item 3174 need more love?

Honestly, the reason why I think Morello's is just so good, is that it meets the needs of like 90% of the mage base. That's simply because if offers already, a good amount of Mana and CDR. (Aside from the AP or the Grievous wounds)

But the part that interests me, is the other 10% of the mage base. A close range Battle mage (Or a Tank) would obviously benefit From RoA. And mages who don't need the CDR, will find success with Archangel Staff. And then their are a hand full of mages who will combined two or more. Ryze who scales with Mana, will get all 3, and anyone stacking mana can get a decent amount of AP from Staff.

But for balance sake, ask the question, "Is the Item balance affecting my champion choice?" if yes, then, maybe Morrello's is a bit too powerful. But I wouldn't call it OP just because it was popular. (Mana options are dictated by the champions needs)

The problem with archangel staff is that you don't build it based on what it does for the champion, but rather what the champion can do for it. A champion will build it largely based on their ability to successfully stack a tear and not put off their power spike too far. Ryze might be an exception due to have having scaling based on mana.

item 3165 and item 3174 are fine for the first category you mentioned. Although to be fair Morello's IS crowding out Athenes. But I think that might be more because Athene's has to be balanced as a support item as well, either way I think it could use a small buff.

As far as the 'health rod' thing goes, you have a fuckton of options ranging from: item 3027 - gives everything you named except cdr, which ROA doesn't need. item 3152 - Gives everything you named PLUS cdr, PLUS a fifth ability (A flash that deals damage) item 3030 - Gives everything you named except the cdr, also includes a fifth ability (Minus the flash element, but the slow is pretty nice) item 3116 - No longer gives mana, but gives a decent amount of health and one of the most obnoxious slows in the game. item 3151 - health, ap, magic pen, and a consistent burn effect that makes deathfire touch redundant (at least imo)

and for damage that also gives mana you have: item 3146 - Doesn't give mana no, but it fits the 'small bonus damage' effect that you're looking for item 3100 - gives you mana, spellblade, cdr, movespeed, and a decent amount of AP item 3003 - gives health, mana, decent mana regen, and a mini Ryze passive with Awe. Gives a godly shield in the late game when it becomes item 3040

If you actually step back and take a look right now, mages are actually more spoiled for choice than almost any other class right now in terms of itemization. The only thing that's really annoying is that DESPITE the huge item diversity they seemingly have, Morello's is edging everything else out because it fits BOTH the utility of giving 20% cdr and mana regen out the ass, AND damage. which is why pretty much anything with a mana bar can blindly build it and still be effective. But I don't think the problem is with Morello's.

The problem is with the speed of the game right now. The game is so fast that in order to keep up with everyone, mages NEED to hit 40-45% cdr ASAP in order to have their abilities up often enough to be able to contribute dick to a fight. But once they HAVE it, they actually need to have the damage to back it up so they are doing more than just performing a laser light show for his team that does little more than tickle people.

item 3165 Fits both needs, mages don't HAVE to make a choice between damage and CDR with this thing, they can have both instantly. By its numbers it actually isn't a lot of flat damage, but the cdr lets them spam more to make up for that. While it brings JUST enough damage to the table for their hits to be noticeable.

Compound this with the fact that MR items for non tanks ( item 3001 item 3174 ) Kind of suck right now so an opposing mid laner that isn't AD scaling (and thus can't just build item 3156 ) can't even hope to itemize against it. And mid lane becomes a place where a fight between two mages is not decided by skill or strategy, but by who checked out their library book faster.

Note that my last sentence in this paragraph was a joke, I know just how much thought can actually go into a battle between two high damage mages, but sometimes it feels like that entire lane is decided by who finished morello's first. It isn't a great feeling when its not you, and it isn't very satisfying when it IS you, at least in my experience.

So why did I say things are fine? Well to be honest, despite what I just said, we need an item like morellos, something that lets people quickly get their setup at the cost of specializing for either damage or utility. I know I just spent the past couple paragraphs making it sound like Morello's is OP but you can do that with any item by only describing its pro's, which I did when describing all of the options mages have. It is a very cookie cutter, generalist 'master of none' approach, the spamming is easily outplayed by someone who focused on pure damage and built something like item 3285 , item 3146 , or item 3003 early to match it and just knowing how to manage their cooldowns more effectively than the spambot. From there they just use the fact that their damage per hit is higher to exert lane pressure and eventually wear the other guy down. Or go the other route and avoid all ins while performing brief trades, while you wait for item 3027 to finish stacking. Using the survivability you have that the other guy doesn't to your advantage to stay in lane longer.

Basically, It's not very hard to outplay a Morello rush. It is very possible, it may be a dominant strategy that is crowding out other options at present, but I don't think it's inherently unhealthy to the game, and there are enough itemization paths for mages that you can pretty easily find something among their armory that works for your current situation to deal with it. It all depends on who you are facing that is rushing it.

I definetly agree that mage itemization diversity is at an all time high right now in terms of build diversity. When I play Orianna, after I get my Morello I can sit back and say: item 3135 Do I want damage? item 3157 Am I in danger? item 3116 Does me team need utility? and after that even more possibilities open up since I can alter my damage patterns by going for either item 3285 item 3100 or item 3089 . Some mage's builds are more linear than others, but overall there are a lot of interesting and meaningful choices to make.

I believe that starting item diversity could be just as interesting of a question if mages could decide whether to focus one aspect of their kit or another with their first item, rather than picking the default item that solves all of their needs. There are a few champions like Lissandra who can start either item 3165 or item 3027 due to liking cdr, ap, and defense, though some players will rush item 3152 on her as she can put off mana for a bit if you maximize her passive and engage smartly. This is a good example of the sort of choice I'd like to see a mage making on their first item.

In my experience the only class that has this much diversity in their item choice is tanks. You can choose the exact perfect armor item depending on your lane match up and the composition of the enemy team.

Mana items aren't a problem when this build exists item 3003item 3165 item 3027 item 3089 item 3135 item 3020

And item 1082 stacking is a great way to start the match off.
