Death of Diversity

League of Legends is becoming less of a skill game and more of a which team has more op champions game. I can understand everyone wants to play the flavor of the month, but when it is that way EVERY SINGLE GAME its so tiresome. Darius has nearly a 100% pick ban rate, Fiora isn't that far behind him, then you have Vayne which is almost a guarantee every game, because of how much stronger she is over the majority of the rest of the Marksmen. Then for support its a toss up between Thresh or Blitzcrank most of the time. The only place of any decent diversity is Mid Lane, and even that is questionable. The jungle is just different champions all using the devourer-BotRK build. I am beginning to wonder if I am the only person who is wishing for each game to be different from each other and not have to deal with the same game seeming to last an entire day.

Post below your thoughts on the Death of Diversity within League of Legends. But no flaming due to someone dissing your favorite champion or whatever. You can take that whining elsewhere. State your case and keep calm if you must say something.

I am tired of seeing yasuo. I'm also disappointed that I cannot select champions such as Ryze and not insta-lose. Too many champions are completely outclassed and require 2 if not 3x as much mechanical ability than push Q win game.

I personally find that Yasuo takes quite a bit of skill to play. But he is overly played despite being in a rather weakened position at this point in time.

i dont agree that any champ is much stronger than any other. theres certainly situations where some champs are very strong depending on team comp/skill level/how late game you are. i certainly dont agree with your selection of the champs you think are op...and your idea of the jungle is totally false. Ive never seen elise build botrk or devourer for example. vayne is not better than other marksmen. darius is nothing close to 100% pick ban rate, neither is fiora. thresh and blitz are not the only supports you see, nor are they superior. In fact the only champ i can think of that might be a bit op is soraka.

I personally don't think any of the above mentioned champions are actually OP but Darius cuts it rather close with that ridiculous 200 bonus ad. And there are champions that are stronger than others. Vayne is the most played ADC right now cause she is stronger than her marksmen counterparts for the most part, as even stated by riot. Yes, Vayne is better right now due to the Meta being juggernauts and tanks which is her specialty, but still, its annoying. I rarely see Elise in the jungle, even though she was buffed rather hard, she isn't that useful unless the opposing team has more than one squishy target. Even then, just because you don't Elise, one champion, build BotRK and Devourer doesn't change the fact that the other 90% of junglers are going that build.

Maybe it's because I'm silver, but I just play the champions I'm most comfortable with in the role I end up: TK, Soraka, or Bard Support, TK jungle, Vel'Koz or TF or Anivia or Malz mid, Varus or Cait ADC, and Quinn or Cho'gath top.

None of my picks are really "meta" at the moment, and we seem to do fine most games (I have a small sample size, but I've won 2/3 of my rankeds). At low-mid elos, it really feels like objective control, CS, and vision are the most important things, followed by your skill/comfort with your chosen champion, and then followed by the champions themselves.

Im silver as well, and I am about to force myself to get to gold despite how much I despise solo q. I played my placements and about 2 others before just ditching ranked for normals fun.

But still, a friend of mine refuses to play ranked until the juggernauts are fixed because they dominate ranked solo q.

Someone should post their thoughts...

I think the game would be much more diverse, if people cared less about what is "meta" and what isn't.

Personally, I've had an absolute Riot playing 3 man lanes and wrecking people who have no idea on how to deal with it. And imho, Jungle and the lanes are actually quite diverse in viability at the moment. A lot of extremely strong champions are being entirely overlooked because they're not popular.

As it currently is, a lot of the "Loss of Diversity because of X champion" is mostly based around a good number of players not wanting to learn new ways to play. I know I've played lanes that made for a oppressive hell for Vaynes and countless other "Meta" champions.

What I think is that it's less a Loss of Diversity in the game itself, though I agree that Diversity is changed up by the reworks, but more of a Mindset that you can't play outside of the meta.

I personally think its not the mindset of not playing outside meta, I believe its just because with specific champions, such as Darius, Vayne, etc.. They can do well their first time around without much effort due to their massive strengths and so then they will play that champion till its weak cause "its whats op" at that point in time. I do think meta mindset has a little to do about that, but its definitely not the biggest factor.

For me, I've been threatened by my team to be reported when I told my team often when I break the meta. One memorable time was when I was going Yorick support. I had to tell them over and over that I know what I'm doing and it'll be fine. Once we finally got into the match, our botlane was super oppressive for the enemy team.

But until then, the chat was extremely toxic about my breaking the meta. It got a lot better once we actually got into the lane, but the sheer amount of toxicity that was directed at doing something new was mindboggling. And this was in normals. It'd be somewhat understandable in a ranked match, as it could be frustrating if someone broke the meta and made you lose.

Yet the current state of the overall community is toxic towards new or rarely used ideas.

Agreed there, I have a similar story about how I recently went Nasus support, I took relic shield as I could get my q stacks with it, my ADC continually took the canon minions before I could proc my relic, so I just decided that I would use my relic shield as I got the procs, and get 3 extra cs everytime he kept me from doing my job and then said something toxic. At 15 minutes, I had twice the farm he did and he quit. I wasn't being toxic back nor was I making it hard on him as I had the same amount of gold I should have had at that point, then 60 gold for every hostile comment he made(I kept track and he called me useless, a piece of shit, douchebag, pedo, etc. and the count was at around 14). The community as a whole is very hateful towards new ideas and out of meta picks, you are actually convincing me of the Meta Mindset. XD
Though I still find most people will play the Flavor of the Month just cause its stronger than most other picks.

I feel the same way. I mostly play blind pick. This last month has been boring as Fuck. Zed.yas.fi.yi.vayne.blitz.Dar.garen. Every game. It's not just the skins. They are picked so much it's ducking sad. 120 champs. 10 get played.I played syndra 4 blind pick games last wk. Mid lane. Every game was vs a yasuo. Only 1 beat me in lane. Pick a diff champ plz. Womping on yas and zed is getting old.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Exactly, I try to play Draft so I can ban those champions and have the best opportunity to play a DIFFERENT match than the previous one.

Lugg1 votes

I completely agree. There is zero reason to play ranked anymore unless you main one of the FotM picks. When you are obviously more skilled than your opponent and still can't beat them because of the champion they are playing, something is seriously wrong. For example, I was like 50 CS and 4 kills up on a Darius who teleported in. He just runs up to me and kills me. No counterplay or fancy mechanics at all, just straight up kills me even though I played the fight about as well as humanly possible.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Yeah, Darius can do that. And it seems like only the most toxic of players are really playing Darius right now, just yesterday, I was carrying a game as Irelia Jungle and a Darius top who was 4/2 repeatedly called me useless when I would be down by blue buff or gromp, he would ping for assistance then INSTANTLY go towerdive the enemy wukong and get outplayed by clones. Then when enemy Yasuo went bot lane and got a double, he started flaming the mid laner for feeding Yasuo, even though he went 3/0 against him. After I said to stop being an idiot and a jerk to everyone, and to chill out a little bit, he reported me for Verbal Abuse.... I now have chat restrictions where he doesn't. Gotta love the system.

I feel as though they should just do something along the lines of a gamemode where Tanks and Juggernauts weren't so strong. I'd be satisfied with a game mode that put a limiter on health, armor and magic resist. That would be a breath of fresh air. Not a single tank allowed... it'd be beautiful.

Decrit1 votes

There are not many champions that can be defined as utter OP: probably morde bot, if he is still that powerful.

Point is: the skill difference that ther eis around can be so much big that the little power swings do not matter that much. We only became more aware ( and more pissed ) about certain champions power, that' s it.

The diversiti has never been so high since a lot of time.

SymbolicFear1 votes

I beg to differ. I don't ever see any differentiation of item builds or champion selection. Maybe its different in EUW, but here its the same thing every time.

Decrit1 votes

Beyond the juggernauts and Fiora, that received updates and understabily were more picked for that ( and not too much aniway ) probably the only stale pick i saw was Riven top, and is notthat big power pick in the end ( mostly in normals, where people still did not know how to play her properly and were training for rankeds ), and probably rengar.

Still i am not sure about that, checking my match hystory now and i don' t see too many picks repeating.

It used to be diverse when the tank meta emerged, right after the first cinderhulk nerf that made itself balanced.

Then came 5.16.

The "season 5 tank meta golden age" was the most recent time where the game was diverse, and I already miss it...

SymbolicFear1 votes

Yeah, I suppose tanks aren't the real issue, its the juggernauts, that almost always get banned in every draft game. Right now, its just Juggernauts, Beefy mid laners, and Devourers

Juicyman1 votes

The problem with the game is that it has forced diversity.

Diversity is a harmony between champions when they can co-exist with each other. What League does however is create something new while nerfing the old. The only reason we see different picks every so often is because Riots forces the game around new items. Diversity is when everything works off of each other, not making the new hotness too hot.
