League is becoming kinda.... Anti-fun...

SymbolicFear··39 votes·4,146 views

This past season, Riot has done a great many things as far as changing the way the game is played. Massive changes to the jungle, the release of champions that encourage toxic gameplay (trolling) and most recently, the reworks for Fiora, Darius, Garen, Mordekaiser, and Skarner. As a result, League of Legends is becoming more and more frustrating to play and the hardcore fans are sticking through it and wishing for Riot to come to their senses.

First I will say something about the champions released this season, particularly Bard and Tahm Kench. Now then, I bet most of us here have dealt with the Bard ults meant to kill his own team mates, or the Tahm Kench eating your team mates and spitting them out to their deaths for their own personal enjoyment. These things should have been obvious to Riot, yet it went un-noticed of course... The other big issue I want to talk about is the Juggernaut Update and the Fiora's rework. Darius, Garen, Mordekaiser, and Skarner were all changed and make into massive powerhouse champions, while Fiora became one of the biggest causes for "BULLSHIT" to be screamed in chat.

Darius received a massive % heal on his Q, and his passive gave him 40-200 bonus AD, and his Ult is now reset every time he gets a kill with it, unlike before where you had to get a kill within a set amount of time for it to become refreshed.

Mordekaiser was another huge issue, as he became an ADC who was not only still really tanky, but could still generate his passive shield and deal immense amounts of damage. So he outclassed all the opponents that would be in his lane.

Fiora, as everyone knows, is now immensely overpowered. She now has true damage, a possible team wide heal, and most importantly, her W. Her W counters any and all crowd control effects, slowing or stunning the caster of the ability, while it also blocks counter attacks. This ability can even counter Ashe and Jinx ults.

Riot seems to be attempting to correct their mistake, slowly but surely. However, up to this point, their attempts to fix the situations have only led to even more issues to arise.

So what do you think about this whole situation, do you think League is going downhill? Do you think Riot will be able to clean up their mess? Leave a comment below and don't forget to vote.

Thank you for pointing out that us bronzies are perpetually doomed to play with/against trolls/afk's/smurfs/ragers, etc. There is no escape, while the upper tiers think back on long ago when they went thru bronze..... they have ZERO CLUE that their old bronze is NOT the new bronze. A festering cesspool of the filthiest scum and villainy this side of Mos Eisley. Gnar

SymbolicFear1 votes

I never said Bronze, I said new players, as in NEW PLAYERS just starting. Most of the time the toxic players that get banned often get perma-banned before even reaching level 30.

ModAttysu The Poro1 votes

Once trolls/douches hit level 30 (if they weren't banned, which is often,) they go ranked, and get stuck with us bronzies. I think that's what he means.

SymbolicFear1 votes

True, but they are naturally banned soon after due to being toxic in a ranked game.

I never started in bronze actually. I do remember when I started in season 2 being put into silver. Getting out of that was hell at the time for me.

It's been anti-fun for a long time. The reason so many people still play it, is because it's like a smack addiction. The community is unbearable. Ranked is a fucking miserable experience. Promos are stupidly unfair bullshit. The balance team is off their heads on fuck knows what. The lore team is smoking some serious shit right now as well.

Why I still play this game (excluding the the smack addiction part) is far beyond me. There's so much wrong with it.

NakedGranny1 votes

Stop playing it then. There are so many other games. So. Many. Other. Games. That you are missing out on. LoL is not fun. It's incredibly stressful and very very bad for your mental and emotional health.

Go play something else. I come back to check in every once in a long while now, and remember so vividly, every single time, why I left.

D&D is so much more fun. There's Fallout4 coming out Soon™ and Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition came out a while back and is every bit as good as I remember. Skyrim's still got all those mods and so much content that you never saw. Quake3 is still out there and now you can play it in your browser for free. Dungeon Siege 2 is still workin' or NWN2 with friends. Pillars Of Eternity was released a while ago, and it's solid. Legend Of Grimrock 2 was just as good as the first one. Etc. etc. etc.

Just play a different game. Or find a hobby. Or get an education. LoL is a waste of time if you can't enjoy it -- and it's simply not possible to enjoy LoL anymore.

Maybe you could explain why you so desperately want to continue doing something that you said makes you so unhappy and why it's unreasonable to just advise you to ... stop doing it?

MrWasjig1 votes

Because I was salty when I wrote that. I just came off of losing a promo series and a subsequent game following. So obviously I'm going to be melodramatic but it doesn't make my points any less valid.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to stop playing this game. I don't want it to be a terrible, unbalanced experience. Because at times one can have a blast, one can have an immensely satisfying time.

But this season has been pretty shitty overall and with how Riot is going about their business recently is very obviously pissing off plenty of people yet they're just ignoring it. Anyone who knows anything about anything knows that you shouldn't piss off your customers. Ever. I know it's outright impossible to please everyone (Besides that would be too tall an order to ask) but right now it's clearly obvious that plenty of people are not happy, especially with the whole Mordekasier debacle.

The problem is not with Mordekaiser specifically but the principle behind everything that is going on. Riot made a terrible rework that was worse than the original state of the champion and they've promised "Post release support" and so far we've not seen any of it. Ontop of that they're just being so callous and reckless about it all. We have to worry about how they will treat other champions going forwards, and how much regard they will give to feedback.

Honestly, it worries me.

NakedGranny1 votes

You know what worries me? Kids are terrified to express any kind of realistic, pragmatic or even just mildly un-enthused sentiment because they're getting brow-beaten by the Orwellian thought police who label them "toxic" just for speaking their minds. Apparently it's super fucking scary to communicate that maybe things aren't so absolutely, sparklingly perfect after all.

And that's far more frightening than Riot's game balance stupidity.

No. No you are not "salty". You are not "toxic" for recognizing when you are not having fun, nor for observing that the game or other players are at fault for that. It's ok to say that people are irritating you. Really. It is. And if anyone dares to tell you that you can't speak your mind -- they are the very first people whose opinions you should disregard.

Because it's their counterplay - kite. There's a reason they fall off in team fights. After those minor nerfs I'd say they're balanced to strong, not really gamebreakingly overpowered like other champions in the past.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Darius is actually stronger in teamfights cause of his Q. Flash pull the adc, Q, auto, w reset, then ult, that's a dead adc.

Keevalroy3 votes

Slowly? No, Riot is further distancing themselves from the community with every patch. They have their little PR driven Q&A posts that do nothing, they force meta shifts if the pro scene is stale, they balance on whim, they rework with no thought given to the champion's playerbase unless it's one of their personal favorites as well, they pay no attention to the horde of angry players outraged by changes that no one but them wanted - continuing to act like nothing is wrong, and in some cases, act like condescending assholes to the players who would dare question their design practices and decisions, all while spending the majority of their time hiding on Reddit with the white knights and mindless esports drones.

League isn't slowly becoming anti-fun, it already is, and it's getting worse every patch. I often wonder how many meetings they've had in the last few years discussing why the community is losing trust with them.

MrWasjig2 votes

I often wonder how many meetings they've had in the last few years discussing why the community is losing trust with them.

Probably none. Because as long as they keep getting money they probably don't give a shit what people think about them.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Yep, which is a real shame, cause so many games went down this same road and ended up getting worse and worse till its death. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to League.

MrWasjig1 votes

As do I. Though given the way things have been going recently I won't be surprised if their image in the eye of the player-base deteriorates further.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Also agreed, there are quite a few people on the forums who blame the rioters like CertainlyT for them just simply doing their job. So it seems cause of those people, Riot no longer intends to care what is said by the community and its showing on the forums with the many hate posts and disgruntled players trying to make their voices heard.

MrWasjig1 votes

To be fair none of the hate is unwarranted. CertainlyT isn't hated for no reason it's because he's done many things that have made players annoyed at him (I won't list them that'd be beating a dead horse).

The thing you need to remember is that while not everyone can be pleased the sheer amount of frustration/anger/insert negative emotion here that's boiling on the boards right now is a clear sign that Riot dun fucked up in a serious way. People don't hate Riot for no reason. Hate isn't just inherent.

SymbolicFear1 votes

True, on the note of CertainlyT, he is just doing his job, he doesn't make all the decisions on the rework, they all meet up and discuss it, with him leading the project. If you blame him, you have to blame all his colleagues as well.

MrWasjig1 votes

The problem with him is the way he handles feedback and, I dunno about you but I always get the air of contempt whenever he responds to it. If you read anything from his Mordekaiser PBE thread prior to the jugger%%%%s rework then you'll get what I mean.

SymbolicFear1 votes

I wouldn't give a damn what people said either if it was always just complaining and negative comments. He has every right not to care what the community says to him if they don't go about it in a much more respectful manner.

How would you put it?

the recent changes are annoying, but you generally use anti-patterns to describe specific game mechanics that can be seen as problematic from a design standpoint. everything has some aspect of anti-fun associated with it, but it's only a problem when fun fails to exceed anti-fun.

take a look at zileas' list of anti-patterns if you want a more in-depth explanation: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=293417

SymbolicFear1 votes

Its starting to be more anti-fun and frustrating than anything else nowadays. As there is a guarantee that there will be either a Darius, Tahm Kench, Fiora, or Vayne in every single game. And you can't ban them all sadly... When you do ban these though, it leaves open more anti-fun picks open like Malzahar, Azir, Heimerdinger, etc..

Mitsu1 votes

{quoted}

Seriously? Malz and Heimer? I could see anti-fun as in the meta shifting from solo carry to a more team-oriented game, but not really as complaining about unique champions that require a different approach in counterplay compared to others. You're stating this game has become "anti-fun", but you're just crying about a handful of champions that are currently strong right now. Guess what, that's nothing new. There will always be something a bit too powerful, which in the end will get toned down. In terms of balancing, we all agree that they overdid it in the juggernaut patch, but they're getting nerfed so that's fine. The champion pool is getting more and more viable patch by patch, so I have no idea what you're on about when you say the game is getting worse. If you don't enjoy it, that's fine, but a huge part of the playerbase is actually excited about the bigger pool of viable picks.

ps: the only ban worthy champs are TK, Fiora, and Mundo right now. Just wait til it catches up to the rest.

SymbolicFear1 votes

Im not saying pro bans, im talking about bans that are personal preference, champions that are just annoying and no fun at all to play against.

Bixits2 votes

Yes. And I'm excited that Assassin's Creed Syndicate comes out in a week, and Fallout 4 just 3 weeks after that. Then ESO's new DLC is dropped and the RCTW comes out in December. I'm going to have plenty of fun waiting for me for the rest of the fall/winter. Hopefully there are some good things coming for S6 though...we can only hope.

I feel the game isn't becoming ANTI-fun, just not that fun anymore. (Anti-fun is kind of a meaningless buzz word just like "toxicity", even though "toxicity" has actual applications.) Many factors are playing into this, though:

  1. Questionable balance choices (CertainlyT, Ghostcrawler) and horrible reworks. (Morde, Darius, first-day Skarner)

  2. Heavily unchecked toxicity with only RiotLyte saying ANYTHING about it, and that's just to pull some stats out his ass and pretend it's k so Rito still looks good at their conferences.

  3. Riot's "Teenage Years" having too much influence over the game. Flashy and unnecessarily complicated kits are the ONLY kits being made this Season. #LCSBIGPLAYS being pretty much the only thing Riot cares about currently, which means anti-playmakers are getting one big shaft and playmakers like those that will not be named (cough LEE FUCKING SIN) are getting overloaded kits and absolutely outrageous numbers to boot.

  4. Poor community management and total lack of decent communication. Yeah, they'll spotlight community projects, they have /ALLCHAT, and they put out Patch Notes and sale schedules...And that's it. Not much past that. Besides the one Rioter that is on the Skins sub-Boards, nobody really posts on anything relevant. (The awful state of Morde NEEDS acknowledgement, c'mon)

  5. Lack of BASIC features that other E-Sport MOBAs (Dota 2) have. Built-in replays, a functioning report system, strict anti-leaver policy (With slight leniency in the fact that you get 1 free abandon per week, resetting on the next day that you abandoned on, so say next Wednesday if you abandon this week on a Wednesday), and a great forgiveness system for the teammates of someone that abandons. (If someone abandons [meaning the message "The game is now safe to leave." shows up], you get to leave without incurring an abandon and using up your free abandon. You still lose MMR points if you abandon and the game was Ranked, regardless if your team went on to win or lose.) Come on, Riot, VALVE, the company that communicates NOTHING besides a basic set of Patch Notes (if you're lucky) and pushed out the Reborn Update before it was out of Beta, is STOMPING you in features. THEY'VE HAD A NEW CLIENT DROP WITHIN A FEW MONTHS AND IT DOESN'T EVEN REQUIRE A SEPARATE LAUNCHER/INSTALLER/DOWNLOADER/CLIENT!!!

I really want to love this game, but I understand less and less what direction Riot wants to take this game. Each Season almost feels like a separate game with barely-similar mechanics. If Season 5 was a pre-courser to the next Season of League, I am NOT very excited for it, unfortunately.

euJHINius2 votes

I honestly agree with this post for numerous amounts of reasons.

  1. The champion design in this game is getting worse and worse. New Champions are getting things like True Damage, Percent Max Health Scaling, Dashes, Immunes, while Reworks like Mordekaiser are literally shoving old Champs into new spots with things like 100% Experience, Broken Healing, and no COUNTERPLAY whatsoever. Basically Power Creep.

  2. They balance for #LCSBIGPLAYS. If LeeSin isn't picked for a while, they will literally buff him for no reason. If Thresh drops down 1 slot from being a God Tier Support, he will get buffed. Vayne has been destroying soloq for so long, yet they nerf her by THREE AD. Yet if a champ that was once trash gets played in the LCS or is a nice pick, but not always great, they find a nerf in the next patch (Tristana and Veigar ).

  3. This Community.

  4. Being in Bronze-Gold is the worse experience ever. People will feed so hard. No one buys upgraded item 3361 item 3362 item 3363 item 3364 . People instalock.

  5. Features in other MOBAs are denied in League for pathetic reasons. (They have Sandbox mode, look at Champion Spotlights. Replays are already done by THIRD PARTYS, yet Riot can't support them cus client)

  6. They force Meta changes. Its not evolving because of the players. Its evolving because they purposely overbuff, gut, or rework champions to change everything again. Juggernauts made Ranked a living hell for a month.

  7. This Community.

  8. No real community engagement. /AllChat and Patch notes don't count for obvious reasons. I only see one riot post, and that's in the Skin and Champion Concepts.

  9. Old Champions never get love or help. Kennen has 2 skins that are basically recolors of his default, his particle effects are poor, and he hasn't gotten a skin since 2011. While Poppy is getting a rework soon, the excuse for it to be in the makings for so long is incredibly buuuuuuuuuuuuull.

  10. Money in this game is fair when it comes to Skins and Wards. Everything else is a no. Runes are unrealistically expensive. Chroma skins are overpriced, with their purpose of being a recolor. And Its annoying to grind for new champions to play, especially when my classes take up my time. I want to spend money on this game, but they make me want to rage instead.

  11. Game Modes don't stay. That makes me honestly disappointed.

The game feels nice and is addicting to play. But they love adding features or practices that make me rage every time I see them.

I don't think so.

And you always have the option of not playing,
