Riot needs to rethink its attitude to balancing Sona

Abyssphere··60 votes·4,171 views

What is obvious from the current PBE nerf and most recent nerf to Sona is that Riot finds Sona's poke & sustain to be a problem. This is... actually a somewhat commonly held belief amongst the player base. Personally I think it's fine - Sona is the poke/sustain support and I don't see why that can't be her identity, but admittedly it's a hard style to lane against. So I won't argue with Riot nerfing her poke/sustain.

However, my problem is the way in which Riot is going about balancing her. If her poke and infinite sustain is too annoying then why, instead of making it weak to the point where her and her ADC will be out-damaged/out-healed, don't Riot just use her other gate besides health to stop her staying in lane indefinitely? That gate is mana. Sona has already taken a hit to her mana with her W's mana cost raised but Q has a somewhat low mana cost, that could scale upwards better. How about 45/50/55/60/65 being changed to 50/60/70/80/90? She runs out of mana quicker than before, but still does what she did. You're not removing her strength (poke/sustain) but removing her ability to do it indefinitely through greater mana gating. Sounds fair to me. Problem is, her mana costs might be too high then. So why not reduce the costs on her non-sustain abilities? Song of Celerity costs a lot of mana for a rather blah abiliity, why not reduce its cost? Crescendo too has an odd mana cost - most ultimate abilities that scaled up in mana cost have been changed to flat (most notably, Nami's Tidal Wave). Reduce Crescendo's mana cost to the standard 100 at all ranks and with a cheaper Song of Celerity she's less punished for using her less "oppressive" abilities, while still encouraged not to spam her Q/W.

My other problem is that Sona gets nothing in return for her nerfs. Thinking her poke and sustain are unhealthy is fair enough but instead of just weakening that (i.e directly nerfing a support most pros think is horrendously outclassed as is), why don't you just transfer the power to more healthy parts of her kit? Song of Celerity is almost universally thought of as underpowered, her auras are honestly pretty weak and her E Power Chord is somewhat poor.

tl;dr - the only reason Sona ever gets picked right now is because of her poke and sustain. If you want to nerf that then there are better ways to do it (greater mana gating) AND she needs to be given something back to have any reason to be picked. Buff her auras, buff her Power Chord, reduce mana costs/CDs on her E/R, whatever. But right now Sona's being stripped of the only thing she has going for her and she's being given nothing she needs to compete in return. This is a horrible balancing method that leads to people like Zilean diving to 43% winrate and then being ignored after. Don't let it happen to Sona.

Sure Sona pokes are strong and her sustain is decent but she is also the squishiest champion designed. She isn't omnipotent. Hard engage on her and she blows up leaving a 2 vs 1 situation. People lose to Sona when they play passively. A poke war isn't what you want. Unless you have Soraka who negates pokes completely.

Sona is actually quite balanced since there is counter play. Her high win rate really comes down to how small her learning curve is to the point where new players can do well with her in a few games. Where as other supports new players lose more games just to learn the champion.

I agree. I just think that if Riot does insist on nerfing her poke/sustain then they could at least be smarter about it. She really needs at least some compensation because her numbers just keep getting worse.

The funny thing is I agree about how you're meant to play against her (and why she's fun). But it seems like a lot of people don't realise how to play against her, which is funny considering how simple she is.

The thing is, Nami is going to outclass Sona in every way mechanic and number wise. Sona does not have anything that nami does not, except for that pitiful aoe shield.

These nerfs are unjustified.

No reason to take Sona anymore.

How about Riot just stops Olafing Sona in the first place? Sona was a C-Class champion pre-rework, not weak, not strong, just there. Now she's Olaf Tier. They took out everything that made her powerful in the name of "counterplay." Yeah Riot has no problem with applying counterplay to older champions, but strangely enough the new champions don't seem to have to have it. They're exempt. The reason behind it? Dashes. And dashes look better for muh esupurts. Honestly it's making me sick. Riot either is extremely ignorant or is flat out lying to us because Nami does the same thing, except better. I don't even play Sona, I occasionaly took her mid with Lich Bane, but this is just stupid. I have long since lost faith in Riot's balance department, and to be honest, they need to burn it down and start it over again, because they have proven time and time again that they do not know how to balance their game.

She is not Olaf tier, she is still fairly decent.

She will be soon if RIot keeps going in the direction they are going with her though..

They should increase the benefits she gives to people that are in her circles heavily as compensation.

People have been saying this since the "rework" hit PBE. Riot doesn't care.

I feel bad. Sona is like the least reliable support right now. Thresh and Morgana are probably the best. Nami is only good if you are badass with those bubbles.

Seriously tho thresh has some of the most obnoxious cc in the game with his flay and morgana has always been good if you can land her snare that lasts forever.

doing anything with mana is completely out of the question

with the increased trend of manaless champions and chalice existing in the game for so long, riot doesnt care about mana

as they said in the urf video "fun is directly related to your mana bar, as mana goes down, so does fun"

Pika3105 votes

Agreed. The OP seems to not understand that Sona's mana is already really REALLY bad. Nami has 36 more at level 1 and still has higher at level 18. Aria is one of the highest cost abilities in the game, certainly the highest cost amongst both heals and shields. Speaking of, it's also the weakest heal and the weakest shield too. Having absurdly high costs on the weakest heal in the game is more than bad game design, it's blatant biased harassment of Sona.

LOL you still trying to defend this nerf from happening the problem with sona is that she's a champ that take no skills to use so riot trying to nerf the reward you get from playing this champ. Riot want to see players play more skilled champ that can pull off big plays not this boring button mashing champ. What's so hard to understand?

You're probably just trying to troll me so it worked if you are.

A champion's skill requisite isn't determined by 'skillshots'. Zed isn't hard to use, you just press R on someone and throw your keyboard at your cat; if they don't have Zhonyas they'll usually die.

Ryze has no skillshots either, and he is actually harder to use than most people think.

What about Udyr? He's in a good spot buff-nerfed wise, yet he's essentially a stance champion like Sona.

FiraBurn1 votes

Lol what zed is not just press r u still have to land all your damage unless you want a negative damage pop at the end. Well ryze you have to combo your skills the right way. Udyr is a melee and suffers from being kite around you cannot compare that to safe range sona. I can play sona sleeping and still win lane that's how unskill that champ is.

-Land all your damage -Zed only 1 skillshot

Udyr's melee, yes, but he has no problems catching up to people and locking them down for a while.

The only ability that has a safe range is Sona's Q bolt, which is pretty far, but does a whopping 40 damage at level 1. Her actual damage comes from her passive, which means getting to Sivir-aa range. Literally any sort of cc she gets hit with and she's a dead mute.

FiraBurn1 votes

Still a skill less champ and riot making the right choice to nerf her. The damage she does is to rewarding for very little effort you have to do they need to do this with all point and click champs like kayle and sona.

Pika3105 votes

"damage is too rewarding"

Sona has the lowest base damage amongst the entire support class. If that's "too rewarding," it's clear you just want Sona to not do any damage at all. How about they remove Hymn and Power Chord from her kit entirely? Or would that still be too much damage for your taste? Should they remove her ult and basic attack as well? Or would literally having zero combat prowess still be too much damage for your taste?

FiraBurn1 votes

That actually sounds good =D. Honestly they should just delete the champ boring kit boring lore and is just a random mute.

I was going to make a thread on this, but it's probably better to keep feedback in one place, so I'll put this here.

If even after all this ideation and experimentation the passive still proves to be a dud, we would can it. It's true some people really don't like it, but I think that's exacerbated by a general distaste for the rework, how ive been poorly engaged with the community, and Cassiopeia's overall weak state. So im trying to solve all those problems first and isolate the passive as the only variable, while simultaneously trying to improve it.

But yes, while we have high hopes yet, we won't keep something in the game thats universally hated.

This is a comment from Stashu from his "Latest on Cassiopeia" thread. This is the comment that I think really needs to be held to with regard to Sona.

From the Sona rework summary:

Essentially, we took Sona to the update board because we saw a unique opportunity to make her more rewarding and more fun. She wasn’t terribly strong or weak, but her kit clearly lacked high moments and overall satisfaction. We wanted to keep her theme as it was and retain her awesome Crescendo while giving her basic abilities a more visible and tangible impact. Oh, and if we could sneak in some fancy texture updates in the process (and we could!), then all the better.

So what’s changed? Well, Sona’s gameplay now revolves more around moments of power. Instead of hanging back and winning a war of attrition during laning, Sona’s now got the kit to power up her allies and save their lives when a fight turns against them. Auras are smaller and more visible now, so getting the most of them requires great positional awareness for Sona and coordination with her allies. This allows us to reward great play with much more impact for each of her songs. You’ll be able to make plays as Sona, earn your team kills and save lives with clutch ability casts and smart positioning. At the same time, the enemy team has larger windows to fight back in thanks to her longer cooldowns, adding in clarity and counterplay to Sona’s kit. We can't wait to see what players can do with her update.

To start I'll ignore the more fun business because that's subjective. Personally I thought she was a lot of fun before. More rewarding is easy to touch on though. If she's more rewarding, similar actions should have more effect. To counter that, the actions were made more difficult to accomplish. (350 range aura instead of 1000 and shorter effect durations) So, are Sona's abilities more rewarding?

Power cord scaling is identical. Both per level and the AP ratio is the same.

Q: The base ability damage took a nerf, staccato damage took a massive nerf (It's even getting nerfed again in the current PBE cycle), and the break even point for the on-hit damage assuming max rank Q and R is 5 auto attacks, but that ignores the fact that it no longer boosts ability use at all. So AP and AD casters don't get benefit to their abilities anymore. Only AAs. It also ignores the difficulty of use. It's nothing to fit your whole team in 1000 range, I don't even think it's possible to fit a whole team in the 350 range aura, in practical play. Additionally, R2 Q used to be worth a full set of AD marks, which would help ADC last hitting a great deal. Current Sona doesn't have that potential.

Summary: All effects are lesser, while additionally being more difficult to actually utilize to their fullest potential. There is no possible way this could be considered more rewarding.

W: Heal is stronger at ranks 4 and 5, and more effective on damaged allies. Shield can provide similar effective health points, with high AP, but has half duration. At max rank W with max R and assuming 320AP (Generous I think) Shield will give 209 x (1 + (Target armor/100)) EHP for 1.5s Activating old W would give Target Health x .2 EHP for 3s and Target Health x .1 EHP for as long as Sona stayed in that stance. Meaning old W's mitigation scaled more with champion levels and ally items then Sona's items which was great for a gold starved support.

Summary: The healing could be either way, old or new. Yes you can currently "Make plays" with a boosted heal, but the mitigation trade is definitely not in Sona's Favor. Similar mitigation values at high AP, requires strong itemization from Sona to be as effective, and drastically lesser duration on the full effect make this another ability that cannot be considered more rewarding. Looks flashy, but provides dramatically lesser effect.

E: Buff to Sona, nerf to allies and minions. Tempo is identical. Necessary change to allow Sona to tag allies with other auras. Basically just lets her become a race car and escape trouble or lengthen aura durations by tagging. Is what it is. Though fast minions was cool.

R: Same, but scales other abilities as well. More rewarding for that fact, but then there's Nami, who's ult also hard CC's (Unaffected by tenacity), also soft CC's, Same base damage but better AP scaling, and 100mana at all ranks vs 100 +50/rank for Crecendo shorter cooldown at earlier ranks, and it's got about 6x the area. Tidal wave may be slower, but if I can land a Morgana Q or Blitz grab, Imma hit a Tidal Wave with 10x bigger hurtbox. Too much of her power budget is tied in this ability without respect for the relative power of similar abilities.

Basicallly her Q and W have less impact than the old versions which is contrary to the stated goal. Her E has a larger impact to herself, but less to her allies which allows her to attempt to tag allies with other auras, which is needed due to their tragically short range. Her gameplay is flashier, but mostly due to GFX buffs. She doesn't feels stronger than she used to due to the fact that even her activated abilities are weaker or nearly the same, not just the auras.

It's interesting to see a much weaker kit get nerfed as often as Sona has been lately, considering the original kit "...wasn’t terribly strong or weak". To me that statement reads balanced. Amazingly she went from a balanced kit that was seen as too boring, to a weaker kit that's flashier, but incapable of being strong in a healthy way, and drawing repeated nerfs.

The current kit isn't as strong as the old kit, but from my observation, it can be more oppressive. Which is strange. The old kit "wasn’t terribly strong or weak". It had a base power floor in the non-scaling auras, that was perfect for a gold-starved support. The power ceiling was high though, due her kit having a strange scaling mechanism through her power chord/lich bane path. Her support build and lane build were sufficientally different enough that lane Sona didn't dominate as a support. It's exactly what they're trying to figure out how to do with Morgana. Right now, Lane and support Sona are too similar as both her Floor and ceiling scale with items.

IMO the best thing to do would be to combine the efforts. Take the new GFX and mix them into the old kit. Flashy presentation with a stronger and healthier kit while showing that Riot learns from and fixes their mistakes. This rework was a mistake. It rewards Sona less than the old kit for the same actions while being more obnoxious to use. Some people liked the more passive playstyle, let them have it, especially when it's an overall healthier kit, and similar kits exist that are less passive (Nami).

Sona was the first champ I got, and I'd hate to see her kit weakened over and over, and all because of a kit rework she didn't need, ends up making less healthy, and wasn't even well received.

A perfect analysis, I have nothing more of significance to add. So instead I want to point out an inconsistency in Fearless' words.

Oh, and if we could sneak in some fancy texture updates in the process (and we could!), then all the better.

This right here is stated as a complete after-thought. Contrarily, during her extremely short time on PBE, the new visual effects were 95% focused upon by Fearless and his henchmen. He blatantly said himself that he purposefully ignored feedback on her kit to focus near solely on those visuals. As a matter-of-fact, they didn't even put in any effort on changes to her in-game model as well. Not only are all of her skins of very poor quality, the designs on her robes and such were inappropriately altered to no longer match her splash arts.

Unfortunately, Riot is not interested in Sona being a strong pick. They stated right off the bat with their rework that they wanted to reduce the power of generalists to make niche picks more attractive. Sona is, by definition, the generalist support. She gives offense, defense, and movement utility to her team mates. Now, you could argue that Nami is better than her in every way, and Riot has stated that they can't hit every support as quickly as they'd like. In this case, rather than asking for Sona to be compensated for her nerfs, I feel like you should just be asking for Nami to get nerfed down to the same level so that there isn't one "correct" generalist support and we can pick and choose based on which kit we prefer.

Thresh What's that? Can't hear you over my insane engages, disengages, poke, hook, lantern pull, way to scale without items, single target and AoE hard/soft CC. Too bad I make too flashy plays to get meaningfully nerved, unlike Sona.

Pika3104 votes

If Nami gets Sona'd down to Sona levels, another support will just become the new Nami. Probably Soraka, but Alistar might butt his head in and even Taric could eventually see the light of day if both of them get Sona'd as well.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

That's fine. Taric is a niche pick (He's anti-AD, the only reason he's good is because AD assassin mids are good) and Alistar is also pretty niche (He's really strong with AOE comps, especially Orianna, but he's no generalist like Sona or Nami).

Pika3105 votes

So you're saying it's okay for all support champs to get Sona'd into oblivion? Why not just remove all support champs from the game entirely if they aren't even allowed to be viable?

Well, I suppose that's already the case, short of being named Thresh. Thresh

The Yetii Rider2 votes

I LIKE Sona. I will play Sona no matter how much Riot nerfs her, no matter the team comp I'm picking into, no matter the itemization. I like the character. She's my favorite character. So if Riot is going to nerf her then the best option I can hope for is that she is the new standard and they nerf all the other supports down to her level.

Pika3106 votes

You say that as if the rest of us don't love Sona. Difference being, we're willing to fight for her when Riot blatantly bullies, harasses and rapes her. Is your affection really so hollow that you choose to idly sit by and watch her be violently assaulted in front of your eyes?

That's not love, that's complete indifference. The definitive opposite of love.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Not at all. I started my own thread about this nerf, trying to get Fearless back on the forums so he can at least give us a reason for these nerfs and hopefully establish a direction he wants to take her now that the rework is over and they've had some time to feel out her new power.

I don't think a mana cost nerf, a nerf to Power Chord Staccato's damage amp, and the heal nerf are worth getting up in arms about. I do think that it's very strange that they want to make Sona's heal feel more useful in a pinch and then they go ahead and halve the missing HP scaling, but really, Riot has done worse. If they feel she's strong, then okay, but at least talk to us about it.

Pika3106 votes

"If **THEY **feel?" Why are you blindly trusting someone else when you have no idea what their qualifications are? They haven't talked to us about it yet, despite how much effort? Even when they did bother posting months ago, it was all propaganda. Use your own common sense, Fearless has proven he doesn't understand game balance. Hiding from us proves this.

Rinky Dinky1 votes

That couldnt really happen. Sona and Nami are both well rounded, meaning they can do everything reasonably well. That's there niche. Problem is, Sona is going to be 100% outclassed by Nami after this nerf, as she fills Sona's role better, and brings more.

Taric and Alistar both lack a Speedboost, empowering allies auto's, etc, so they could never take Sona or Nami's place as generalist adc's. But Nami will, and honestly has, taken Sona's place. No reason to pick Sona over Nami.

Pika3102 votes

Nami has already outclassed Sona since the beginning of season 4. She was maybe, 10% better? I'm just throwing an estimation out there, the point being it used to be a somewhat negligible margin.

Ever since Sona's "rework," the chasm of Nami outclassing "Sona" has increased by ten times. This upcoming nerf is the first stepping stone to Nami eventually and inevitably dealing thrice as much comparable damage.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

Exactly. Right now, Sona can do a bit more damage than Nami at most stages of the game. After this nerf? Nope.

Nami will bring more, and do anything Sona can do better.

Better Heals, better cc, better poke, better empowered autos, better everything.

Nami's ult even applies more cc than Sona's ult if the enemy team has any tenacity.

I don't think Riot cares for the identities of champions much. I think in Season 3, Riot nerfed Garen's Courage Passive changing it to 20% of bonus armor/magic resist rather than 20% of total armor/magic resist. The main thing Garen had going for him was the ability to rush damage items early while still being pretty tanky, and I think they said they liked that attribute about him, but later on they just dumbed it down even though he wasn't really too difficult to beat while he had it.

I think it took something like 14 Armor and 10 Magic Resist off of his Lv.18 stats, which you kind of just wonder why that was even necessary. It ended up happening because players didn't want to learn how to deal with him and would rather have him nerfed so he wasn't used much at all anymore. (Although he wasn't used a ton before anyway) The problem lied in the current itemization available and wasn't really related to his current kit itself. Sona's item that's causing a nerf like this is likely Lich Bane.

I think the same thing might be going around here, but who knows. I hope they don't gut her through repeated nerfs.

As far as I saw it's only a nerf of 0.1 on her Q ap ratio. Then again my source s@20 has not been that accurate lately as far as the final picture is concerned...

I just know nerfing her mana especially by that much would be far more harsh than a sliver of AP scaling. AP scaling is really not a big loss compared to mana efficiency or the base effect of her spells.

I think it's 10% of her power chord, so 15% from her Staccato has been nerfed, if my math is right.

That's quite a bit, imo.
