Runes and masteries should not exist. They are the very embodiment of the "invisible power" that Riot claims to hate so much. They also serve as a huge part of the barrier to entry of the game, which Riot also claims to hate. They don't seem to realise that the biggest barrier to entry isn't the skill floor (which is laughably low compared to mechanically intensive games), but rather the simple fact that it takes so long and costs so many hours simply to acquire a basic pool of champions and runes with which to play the game on even the lowest competitive level. That's the real barrier to entry. Nothing more, nothing less.

They have plenty of other avenues of income, but I guess Tencent Holdings is greeding for the whole pie. They already own 97%+ of the company, so they undoubtedly make all the big business decisions. Riot is little more than an artistically driven shell at this point, with a meager amount of game development relevance on the side.
