Can't we just make Autofill optional?

Tristana GREETINGS FELLOW HUMANOIDS!Tristana

I will try to keep this short.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the Autofill we have grown accustomed to over the years is a double-edged sword. Yes, it helps reduce queue timers but it also forces players to play something they don't want. If you lock in as Top/Mid, for example, why the hell would you want the game to force you to play ADC? So you could get into a game 2 minutes earlier?

So I shall now propose this. Implement an option in the lobby where you can enable/disable Autofill. This way, people who really want to play the roles they have selected can get rid of it, and those who like the reduced queue timers can still keep those. Everyone benefits, right?

This idea has probably been proposed before and I don't want to make it sound like I came up with it myself, so I shall end this post with a poll. Feel free to leave a comment down below sharing your own thoughts with the rest of us.

I feel that autofill and also your suggestion is only a patch for the root cause. Which is: People don't find it appealing to learn all five roles of the game, though they should (it's part of the core game). Maybe the new Ranked system helps making offroles more attractive to play (so you are not a 1x Plat and 4x Silver).

I would agree that learning new roles is important.

In normal games.

If you're playing ranked, you will want to play what you have locked in, because that's the role you are best with. I'm not assuming you want the game to force you to play something you are worse at, if it's the difference between winning your promos or not, right?

Therein lies the problem though. There aren't enough people in all the roles to have adequate matchmaking, because the roles people tend to be "best at" aren't jungler or support, some of the most autofilled roles in the game. If autofill wasn't a thing, queue times would go up, and we'd be wasting a lot of time in ranked waiting for 1 queue to pop. Even then, if someone dodges, it makes the wait even worse.

Which is why I proposed to make it optional? So that people who really want to get into a game quickly, can still do that.

Yes, but you're missing the point. It's not just one person that's affected if autofill is optional. Supports and Junglers are the least picked role, because people want to top, mid, and ADC. If you make autofill optional, you have 2 low pick roles that are now requiring people to either select the option to autofill, or queue as a jungler or support. You have at least 6 players guaranteed to queue into top/mid/bot for both teams in a game, and then 4 more players who rely on autofill and a very small population to queue up in those roles. Given that most people won't select autofill for ranked, this effectively eliminates autofill from ranked and now is requiring that 4 roles (2 on each team) be filled with people who queue as jungler and support. Looking for 4 people will greatly increase queue times and make ranked queues extremely long. I queue support in the game now, and at certain times, I have 4-5 minute waits in high bronze, so imagine what that will be like when you let people opt out of autofill.

I'm sorry but I still fail to see the problem. If the majority of people want to play the roles they want, at the cost of higher queue times, shouldn't they be allowed to do that? I don't see how your opinion in wanting reduced timers is MORE important/valuable than another person's opinion in wanting the role they actually locked in as.

Besides, if the increased queue timers become a significant problem and piss enough people off, surely people will go back to enable it?

League consists of five roles, so if you want to have a good rank, you have to play all roles at least decently. If you are a one role pony challenger, you have mastered the game just for 1/5 portion. So get good and at least master the other roles to some degree.

If they give bonus rewards for autofilling maybe. I don't want to play with an autofiller that has vastly different skill levels at each role though. I suspect the new changes to MMR next season should encourage more to outright autofill and fix the problem you're complaining about though.
