The damage AP Varus does is literally insane. Depending on what you build you can do anywhere from 120% to 160% of someones maximum health in just three auto attacks and two abilities.
Serious question, why do I never see AP Varus? What disadvantages does AP Varus have that AD Varus doesn't have, other than less powerful long ranged poke?

Because it's trash like AD varus is.
From what I've heard the biggest draw back is the horrible early game. If you can get past that and get decent farm, then you're set.
AP Varus is a lot like AP Kog. Very situational and generally complete trash in soloq. It's especially bad now with the new AD items.
Well with the changes on the AP items and some masteries, I would recommend an hybrid gameplay on him, he does a lot better.

Honestly, he is shorter ranged and less safe than ad varus. AP varus needs to auto attack more, not just snipe with q. Sure, late game he can one shot with his ult + one ability, but until he gets a ton of ap, he needs to be in auto range a ton, while ad varus can just contribute by sniping with q from max range and lifestealing off the enemy front line. He needs more peel than ad varus.
Basically, mostly you play ap champs to do a lot of damage with your abilites rather than auto, but varus is the opposite: you auto a lot with ap varus and your q and e are garbage on their own, while ad varus can snipe with q rather than constantly auto.
because ad is much more broken...ad has more than enough + quicker burst and poke...also the dps are more reliable.
I enjoy him. Yes, he needs something for sustain. Possibly the Gunblade would help.
With a Nashor's Tooth and the W passive his auto attacks essentially have a 0.4AP ratio which is almost a Lich Bane every hit.
He can do a bit better now that he can shoot the ult, one auto + Q for full stack blight and another auto + E for a 2-stack blight.
Or He can simply Ult and Q for "Go Home" poke as his ult goes down to a 38.5 second CD.
