I always thought that elise had a late game tradeoff for her early game strength in the past. Now she is just a joke outside of a strong first clear, that is all she has anymore...

kirbyzama9 votes

Honestly its a shame about Elise. I never had a problem with her and knew few people who did. Mostly people who picked her would build damage and die instantly or build full tank because "its how (insert lcs player) did it" and act like they built damage and not like a good little cocoon bot. If a ranged easy to land stun was op taric would be op too.

Don't get me wrong she was heavily impactful in competitive play. Even OP maybe? She did just enough damage to be effective while building tank, was elusive enough to where mistakes weren't too punishing, she has a good cc, and she clears really well to make more plays.

She is kinda like the opposite of Katarina, who is good for solo q. Elise is great for competitive but is subpar for carrying in solo Q especially after all her nerfs. I'm sure some people would disagree but this is just my observations. The dragon aoe also hurts how she kills it, indirect nerf. Now she definitely had her power. She limited jungle diversity. Why play ____ when you could play elise etc? Now its even worse because now you can only have one lee sin-level Jungler in a game.

Yeah, now it's like why play Elise when I can play X. This is sad coming from a main.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

"Why play X when I can be [Master Yi/Udyr/Tryndamere]" Or something along those lines... But it's probably fair in Yi's case since he doesn't have any CC in his kit... Probably just increase the CD on his Q? But Tryndamere is pretty oppressive, imo. Is there really any way to combat his damage and crit chance increase passively? Or even his invincibility?

AbodyHUN6661 votes

They can be opressive sometimes, but there are ways to counter them. You need to focus him to make him pop his ult, keep some CC ready to get away after it, then kill him when it's over. Ignite helps to counter his lifesteal and exhaust cripples his dps and makes him kitable. If he gets into your team to kill the adc you should damage him until he pops ult then ignore him unless you have CC. When Udyr dives deep into the team it's the same, everyone should focus him unless there is someone on your team who can get into the enemy team and kill their carry too.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

In the first example are you referring to Tryndamere or Master Yi? The Udyr one I can understand, but usually my complaints about him are usually when I'm trying to run away from him in a 1v1 situation... As Jinx -.-

AbodyHUN6661 votes

My first example is Trynda. With Udyr try to think of a real life situation. You are a girl (Jinx), would you go into a forest alone when you know there is a hobo wearing various animal skins? I think you would ask your buddy to come with you (who is a spirit torturing inoccent souls). When you go somewhere alone vs Udyr, Yi, Nocturne, Khazix you should have a backup plan to them coming at you. Their strongest point is catching a lonely target and sticking to them, so you should have a partner with you. Most experienced supports stay with their adc all the time. If they jump on you try to stay with your allies, many carries tend to run towards turrets or base running away from the team. This way if Yi or Kha kills you and gets away from your team at the same time.

Funny, I remember that 1v1 incidence with me running for my life in the jungle........ Yeah, that makes plenty sense :) Thanks for the advice!

She's basically the equivalent of Jayce this time last year, a formerly OP champ with a loaded kit who's fallen on hard times.

Junkο4 votes

Except Jayce can still be good if you know how to play him(though it's better to play Nidalee). Elise is literally thrash.

yes i was 9 and 1 as varus with bt and a phantoms he 1v1'd me it was BS riot needs to fix him

You 1v1'd a fighter as an ADC and LOST??? How could that happen?

not a starburst6 votes

Well, yes. Jayce is a bruiser with reasonable CC and good burst. And you were a squishy with no escapes. I'm not sure what you expected?

Dark Topline5 votes

She still has some ganking potential during laning phase but she's definitely weak in the new jungle with a slow clear time and even with gold she doesn't scale as well as she used to. They'll have to focus her rework after nobody buys her new skin though ;)

Decaedeus5 votes

She's like Poppy, in that she really can't be allowed to be strong competitively. If Elise is strong, then... she crowds out every other jungle pick due to the fact that she's insanely flexible and has tons of utility while having few meaningful weaknesses. In my opinion Elise needs a minor rework that actually preserves her identity (read: don't let Stashu rework Elise) and clearly defines strengths and weaknesses for Elise.

Lee Sin is allowed to be competitively strong and he's more versatile than Elise ever was.

And the idea that Elise has no weaknesses is vastly exaggerated. She has essentially no escape, has to get into very close range to do most of her damage, is a terrible team fighter and scales awfully into the late game. And to be quite honest she's not even a fantastic 1v1 champ.

It is obvious that she has weaknesses, alongside her strengths. Riot simply has to buff her without removing all of her weaknesses and that's very doable. You can buff her damage or even her tankiness a bit, or make her stun more reliable, but she'll still be an early game specialist who can't be relied on in long lasting games nor the grouping phase. It is completely fair.

I agree with the rest of the post, but not the part about Elise having no escape.

Elise's spider form E is a viable escape ability.

It's iffy. It's not utterly useless but unless you're being very careful with positioning near enemy minions or jungle camps, you've got nowhere to go except hopefully an enemy champion that's somewhat far away from the rest of their team/not overly threatening. Rappel is great for dodging skillshots/generally large damage, but as a flat out disengage it's very conditional. Far from a Lee Sin or Katarina ward hop.

DeathToEcchi4 votes

Elise is the ONLY champ that has both an initiation (current hp), and an execute (missing hp) combined in a single ability pool. Let's not forget shapeshifters are easily proven to be way more powerful than expected of their individual abilities adding up to numbers wise. And she does have a semi-escape, which makes her perfect for tower dives... Which is honestly the name of the game in competition...

She isnt a huge factor outside smurfs in mid-lvl elo, but that's not the point... Anyone can hit pro level with a single champ and affect game balance.

I Main Swain4 votes

and then you play her top and laugh cuz its way stronger than her jungle (which honestly shouldn't be the case)

double percentage damage? yeah fuck that. Stay nerfed into the ground. Take lee sin with you btw And zed And fizz. And Gnar And thresh And lucian. and syndra And all the other FOTMs/previous FOTMs i don't care to list

Champion Skin3 votes

Ehhh.. there will probably always be FOTMs pretty much no matter what you do

People can be sheeps (and some champions will almost always be a bit stronger or just stronger then other commonly picked champions)

lDontLiftIcarry2 votes

name a champ that wasn't viable in season 1 or season 2(before the complete olaf gutting and release of broken DFG WRRR ahri)

I played AP janna back then. Karma top(pre rework before they ruined her kit into a Q bot) Cass mid. Cho top/jungle Olaf top/jungle Katarina top/mid(pre rework before her base stats got gutted to shit) I played tons of shit, I certainly never worried about something being picked that I couldn't play against. or wasn';t some overbearing sack of shit that gets 1-3 kills in lane phase and then completely carries the game and is ungankable because of a broken INVIC/Fast travel time/No travel time gap closer that makes them impossible to gank ON TOP of flash.

YOU BEEN WARNED3 votes

If you're trying for buffs, it's rework or go home. When her kit is strong it has no counterplay whatsoever.

WutsKraken3 votes

On paper she might still seem strong...but yeah I agree she's way underwhelming now, even in competitive play Elise seems to only win when her team's able to snowball. Sure I guess snowballing people early-midgame is her job, but other junglers can do similar things just as well if not better

Drunk Rummate2 votes

shes got buffs coming on PBE to help her jungle clear. maybe it will help.

honestly she still does a ton of damage. the biggest loss was her level 3 tower dive is a lot weaker since you dont get the guaranteed damage from your rappel. speeding up her clear time may make her viable again.

Zirzon2 votes

That's odd, I've never had trouble with her jungle clear. What I really have issues with is dealing any damage mid to late game, no matter how fed I may get.

Considering her competitive presence?

I highly doubt that.

Considering her competitive presence?

I highly doubt that.

She gets played rarely in competitive, and when she does, its usually because said Jungler has no other strong pick to fall back on because of pick/ban phase.

But when she is picked, the first reaction of literally any commentator when she's picked is something along the lines of oh no...don't lock her in, or discussion about how weak Elise currently is and how even if she does well, her presence on the battle field is incredibly underwhelming.

In other words, even commentators for LCS and pro circuit games know she's in a horrible place.

{quoted}

Honestly, if you just add damage to her cocoon (human form E) it would balance her out and still involve skill to make it happen.

What do you think?

I think a better solution right now for Elise is to establish an official identity for her, as of right now, she's kind of in the same place as Evelynn where she doesn't have a clear strong point, I.E. is she an assassin? A bruiser? Or a tank? By not having a strong point, she does not have a meaningful weakness which is the problem, she does everything, but the nature of what she does is lackluster, which is a shame since she has such an awesome kit.

From there out, I think it becomes easier to address Elise's problem. If her cocoon gets a damage buff, the question becomes what are we trying to make Elise? I think its a good idea since her cocoon is a signature part of her kit.

seems to be doing fine in here: http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/2q1yay/champion_usage_iem_cologne_40122_3278_jarvan_100/ I don't particularly care for what the casters say,and most junglers can play more than 2 champions,so they could pick panth/etc instead of being forced to something you consider trash.

Just curious, did you watch the IEM Cologne? I watch many of the games and it was actually funny enough in this tournament where Elise's problems started to become incredibly prevalent and noticeable to me. In at least two of those games where Elise won, she was carried pretty hard, in most of her losses, she was wrecked pretty hard.

NA Olde1 votes

Funny how even some LCS junglers insisted on build AP on her in spite of her shitty AP ratios. Ap is good maybe for early game (better clear due to stronger volatile spiderling), but her early game clears are more than ok already. Building full pen with Liandri's/Rylai's combo gives her exactly what she needs. I just don't think is fair compare her to Lee Sin, Jarvan or Pantheon since everybody knows that these champions fall off REALLY HARD late game and are picked for the imense early game power. Elise is a strong early game champ but her late game is good just by the fact that the has a skill that render her invulnerable for some seconds and the fact that she has two skills that scale with the enemy's HP, which means that even if you are weak late game (like full tank) you can finish off people with your Q's. I just think that in the atual meta HP stacking is really uncommon and this hurts her really hard. Just my 3 cents though.

PS: one not so cool thing was the change on Rylai's for more AP and less tankness, since you want it as a defensive item on her and instead it gives you more useless AP (the item was core on her so maybe is one of the things which helped on her decline).

Literally the game's worst win rate.

Kristari Zuboro1 votes

I think that's the point with her kit though... She CAN work IF played in a pre-made 5v5 with comms... Otherwise, she's just not a good champ to play.

I guess if we want two sets of champs - 1 group that can be played within solo q, and 1 group that only works within a pre-arranged team comp, then everything is peachy!

The worst win rate in the game. She's played by a tiny amount of the player base (basically her mains only) and still manages to do worse than Urgot. It's not a player problem, it's a champion problem.

Yws6afrdf7bc7891 votes

I for one know that every champion is viable, and that player is not always the one that's not the problem. Look, I love draven, yet I can't every use him to his full potential, but do not say "draven is hard champion to learn" or "rito should make the draven axe catching area visible to only draven and allies" but rather I say "I suck at playing draven, he is op only in the hands of good draven player." Period. Same with Elise, I love playiing her( In normals only) , but I would never play Elise in ranked games because I'm not good at effectively using all her kit to her full potential. But in time, and lots of practice, I too might one day be able to play her in ranked games, but for now I will keep on practicing her in normals.

Pæan2 votes

She is just in that "no-man's land" that Evelynn is also in. Not enough damage unless built for straight AP, but no tankiness unless going directly that way. I just feel that Elise in her current state is somewhat lack-luster. Late-game you throw a cocoon to maybe catch someone out and that's pretty much it. She was nerfed pretty hard, but she isn't totally unplayable like some other champs.

AbodyHUN6664 votes

I mained her when she was strong, kept a decent winrate but as she was nerfed to the ground I noticed that suddenly my winrate with her was 45% and I just did a lot better with other champs despite maining her. She just doesn't feel like woth it.

junglerboy161 votes

They already have buffs for her on the PBE, calm down.

exiledFromBadmen4 votes

Only some monster damage? She falls off worse than Lee Sin. Elise already has strong clears.

junglerboy161 votes

Last I checked, it was early clear that was killing her, especially if she missed a gank and needed to farm to catch up. Also, any buff is still a buff, and Riot is probably being cautious with buffing her since she is so dominant and broken when strong.

exiledFromBadmen1 votes

Elise has pretty strong clears with her sustain+spiderlings.

Glamazon1 votes

I was watching Oddone last night and he said that he thinks she's a strong pick competitively but on the weaker side for solo queue. Her base damage and utility is still good imo. She just doesn't scale/solo carry anymore.

Maybe when the lee sin nerfs go through she'll be played more.
