Why is Riot Suddenly Releasing a Bunch of Champions that can troll you?

I don't have much wrong with this, as it's rare to actually have someone troll with these types of champs, but why is Riot suddenly doing it a lot? Sometimes you use stuff with unintended consequences and it ends up screwing your team.

Bard Kalista TahmKench and Kindred.

It mainly has to do with Riot's design philosophy evolving over time. For a long while, League's design had been running along certain unspoken rules (and still is now), one of them being "don't allow anything that could explicitly backfire on your allies". More recently, though, the design teams at Riot have been pushing the boundaries of experimental gameplay and questioning their assumptions, and realized that having "troll" abilities around not only had far less of a negative impact than they initially thought even in failure cases, but could also allow for completely new and fun gameplay. Moreover, I think they realized that whomever was going to deliberately screw over their own team with those champions was just as likely to do it by straight-up feeding with any other champion, and so it wasn't worth considering the toxic community when coming up with new mechanics.

I remember when Tahm Kench was being tested when you could eat your allies and spit them out like you would minions.

this was a bad thing??

Tahms could eat his allies and spit them out under the enemy fountain.

he can still do this...

Spit them out deep into the enemy fountain like a minion? No, he can't.

He could then send into the enemy team where they could die super fast.

oh, do you mean the full distance? yea that's awk. I mean, he gobbles an Ally now and then you just stand there awkwardly because you meant to gobble the other and there's a cooldown before they can get out...

He would also deal damage to them, so he could kill allies and get gold for it, and if he threw an ally in the enemy team and the ally died, he would get an assist.

I'm with you on Bard.. during one of the rare times I've had to jungle in a game I had an ally Bard who ulted right on top of my Wukong ult.

For the most part Tahm is useful and only eats allies in good situations, and I've never personally experienced a bad Kalista ult, and I'm a support main so I'm always the oathsworn ally.

like seriously. there was one time I used kench to save a low health allie, and you know what happened? in the split second it took my brain to direct the mouse to the location and click, my two allies shifted slightly and I ate the full health ally who just arrived and watched the low health one die, than me get focussed down dead as I had to wait to spit my allie back out, and I 100% am sure the allie I swallowed got one of their abilities cancelled and put on cooldown D:

They had a policy against it for years but after a ton of community whining claiming that players are mature enough not to troll with it, they seem to have been experimenting with it now.

The "clean" design choices can only go so far.

DotA has some unique abilities that are outright broken, but they can destroy your own team if used incorrectly.

A hero called Omniknight has a targeted spell-immunity skill. It gives complete immunity to abilities (some skills go through it but most do not) to the targeted ally or enemy. So it can save an ally from an enemy caster, it can prevent an enemy from getting healed, but it can also prevent an ally from getting heals/shields etc, or save an enemy from your team's spells.

That kind of skills are common and they dramatically increase the skill cap of the game. You can't just press all your buttons and hope for the best, knowing that pretty much all of your skills will either harm enemies or benefit allies.

This kind of design allows for more power put into the skills, since they aren't 100% beneficial for the team. If Lamb's Respite (Kindred's ulti) were allies-only, it would be gutted. It would be absolutely broken. But now, enemies can play around it. They can enter the area to receive the benefits, they can bait it so it helps them more than you, they can push you out of it and completely turn it against you.

There are many ways to play around such powerful skills, simply because they're not "allies only" or "enemies only".

Of course I don't think Riot will ever design a gigantic delayed AoE nuke that can kill both allies and enemies. Like DotA, team-neutral design works best with team-neutral skills ( = utility). Damaging abilities will always target enemies.

I agree, I was only explaining why they had avoided it before and suddenly have been using it quite often lately.

I know, I wasn't disagreeing. What you said is a true fact -- and I'm glad Riot is more daring now.

Εach champion should be a bit OP in their own way, and Riot is making a good job to make sure they do not overlap. :)
