World's 2016 Shows a Problem Riot Has Admitted Exists, But Stopped Addressing

About a year ago Riot spoke about niche champions vs generalists. (I don't remember what prompted it. I think it was either the Cass or Sona rework).

They said as long as a niche isn't sharply defined or a generalist is just too strong, the generalist will always see more play because they're just more useful.

Fast forward to today, where supports are by and large balanced with each other. You see Nami being picked constantly.

The solution is not to nerf her, it's to change her. Nami can heal, speed up, poke, stun and initiate/disengage even from across the lane.

We don't need a longer CD or higher mana costs or lower healing. We need to cut something she CAN do and make some other things she does better.

As an example, you could replace Nami's E, which does poke damage, slows the enemy and speeds up the affected ally, with a pure disengage like a short range knock back that centers on Nami so it can't be used offensively unless she gets behind you.

Or maybe poke is her thing, in which case you could replace her E with a line skill shot that does magic damage.

Or maybe the speed buff is her thing, so you remove the healing from her W and double the MS her passive gives when it bounces off an ally instead.

Riot. You KNOW generalists aren't healthy by nature. The Lee Sin rework you proposed shows that. So A) Stop making generalists at all, and B) Guve minor, Draven sized reworks to the generalists who already exist.

I clearly said the solution wasn't to nerf her. We just need to give her a specialization like everyone else, instead of letting her continue to do everything.

So then why isn't thresh pick/ban as well? Or better yet why is this the first time all year that Nami has become the most picked support if this has been a problem since 2015?

Thresh has always had a high pick rate, ever since his release. That has more to do with the fact that he was released as an attempt to make a support who was incredibly gold-unreliant, then improving the gold for every support after that. The scaling AP and armor, the the CD reduction on his Q and the fact that his Q casting animation doesn't change his facing like Blitz's does, as well as his scaling on-hit magic damage and his range despite inherent tankiness...Thresh has an overloaded, generalist kit to be sure.

The reason he's not pick or ban in this particular competition is that Nami is just better. That has a lot to do with the power of healing over shields though.

Edit: As to your second point, the reason Nami is so strong in the current meta but not in previous ones is that the 2v2 matchup never existed in 2015. Lane swaps have always been the default. Now that Riot has forced the lanes to stay standard, healing is significantly more important because your carry is taking more damage. A carry isn't going to take damage laning against a top laner, that's just not going to happen unless they get ganked.

Nami is stronger than Sona, Soraka or Taric because she has a powerful CC tool in addition to her heal that lets her set up ganks even at level 3, which is part of the generalist issue.
