If you're going to play on the NA server please for the love of god.
Speak english....thank you.
Speak english....thank you.
Isnt NA home to hundreds of ethnicities with different languages?
Not really... English is the primary language in the US and Canada, the US has a decently large Spanish-speaking population, and Canada has a small French-speaking population.
Other than that, there's just a few Native American reservations where some of the older folks might still know their ancestral language, but everyone uses English except for the occasional tribal ceremony. And there's a few pockets in coastal regions where large numbers of Asian immigrants live together ("chinatowns" and the like). But, that's it.
Nearly everyone in NA's primary language is English and, if it isn't their primary, they almost always speak it decently as a secondary (especially considering the gamer demographic were talking about).
Yes. Exactly. I'm sick of people saying "the U.S. is diverse in it's languages and ethnicities" but at this point it really isn't. It's a mix of everything that's become mostly homogeneous. Even cultural pockets like chinatowns usually have huge amounts of American/U.S. culture bled in.
Isnt NA home to hundreds of ethnicities with different languages?
No mainly spanish
Then why do you expect everyone to speak english...?
It was a joke.
Then why do you expect everyone to speak english...?
And mainly that's aimed at chinese players.
Cz it also looks stupid when a pure-English speaking player transferred to a Korean server, and then never talks a single bit as he doesn't know wtf is going on in the chatbox.
You cant just transfer the the Korean sever lol
I meant japan, mb. But still the same logic tho.
Yeah, well they would be dumb for doing it, just like I'm tired of the hieroglyphicsphics, lol
that's not what he said.
hundreds of ethnicities with different languages?
Isn't really true. There are mixes of ethnicities but the vast majority boil down to a mix of European, Native American, and mostly Spanish. Now the EUW server truly has hundreds of different ethnicities, but the vast majority of people agree to using english on that server.
The French Canadian people would like to have some polite words with you.
French (became of Canada) and Spanish aren't uncommon, but English is the most commonly spoken.

French is relatively popular in the Southeastern U.S.A. as well, Creole and Cajun. English is the most understood language in the world though so it seems to be the easiest to agree on.
French, Creole, and Cajun (which is really just a French dialect) are only "popular" in southern Louisiana, and you can't even really call them popular. They are only really spoken in small, shrinking communities who hold onto them for traditional reasons, but who mostly speak English, anyways.
Key phrase is most commonly. A few niche places speak only french and unless you are in a spanish dominated country, you are probably learning english too.
There is no excuse for speaking Korean in the U.S. while in a trio with your friend. At least you spoke english once to tell me to shut up. (team i played with)
Chinese people are taking over :V
Isnt NA home to hundreds of ethnicities with different languages?
In EUW we have spanish, french, greek, italian, english and german people, and everybody speaks english. And when they don't they are probably insulting you.
Unless they play with premades, yes. I am not a native english speaker either, but this game helped me alot in terms of learning english. When I started playing league 4 years ago, my english was pretty shitty, no joke. I never took any english classes besides the one at school, which was really bad when I think about it now. Now I can proudly say my english is so good, I can communicate with people around the whole world (in texting only, my pronouncements are shitty) and I'm really happy about it. The fact that everyone communicates in english makes it so much easier to learn the language and understand things you couldn't before.
Who knew League chat of all places would actually teach you something worthwhile? Especially in EUW
Oh I learned a lot from the game, not only did I improve my english by far, I also learned that a negative mindset will never bring you far and much more.
On the negative mindset: League is probably the only thing in my life where I actively try to not be negative.
I don't know why. Maybe I've had one too many games where I realized the impossible can happen.
It only takes that one Xpeke or 4-man win and you're inspired forever. Godspeed Ralanr.
I've had enough Sion Xpeke to never say die.
{quoted} when they don't they are probably insulting you.
Ok ... good to know, thanks.
Que?
^ i dont care if i see French or Spanish in the chat, but for the love of god please be able to respond when the rest of the team asks a question
I don't know why, but this thread reminds me of a game I had a while back where I got paired with a French-speaking three-man and the other solo queuer kept on demanding they "stop speaking spanish."
It was actually German.
I can't tell if this is a joke or if this happens on a regular enough basis that someone actually told a a German premade to stop speaking Spanish. ._.
While some other guy thinks it's French.
Hey buddy... this is the North American server - not the United States server. While I might speak English and only know a bit of Spanish, that doesn't mean this holds true for everyone in North America. Take Canadians (part of NA) - most speak English with some knowledge of French too. Then There's all those countries south of U.S. - who will mostly be speaking Spanish. Still part of NA. So you have no more right to demand everyone speak English than they do to demand that you speak Spanish or French. Would it be nice? Yeah. And I can kind of agree with you about people from Asia or Europe playing on the NA server - they should learn at least one of the three most common languages in NA and not be a jerk when speaking a different language. But it can go both ways - you can learn Spanish or French or whatever too.
NA is solely US and Canada.
Mexico is in North America also.
It is, but Mexico's "main" server is LAN.
Sorry for bad England
That's stupid. There are a vast number of french-speaking or spanish speaking people in NA.
It's the NA server, not the English server.
Imagine going to a McDonalds. Everyone appears American, but when they speak, they all speak French. To make it worse, they can't understand you.
You're just trying to do a simple task of getting food but just because they don't communicate in a way you don't understand, you can't complete your task. That's what it's like for English speakers to get in a game with a group of people that only speak french or refuse to speak english. Same for a person who only speaks french with people that don't know french.
It's just better that it's all one language. Not for ethnicity or diversity sake, but rather that a team game can actually be a team game.

It's a false analogy.
The McDonald's workers are by contract meant to know and speak the official language of whatever, because they're providing a service as a business, which makes them by obligation meant to know the official language and speak it as a default option to their customers (secondary options would be applied if communication can not be established too, such as grabbing someone who can speak the customer's language from the back to the counter).
But no one is providing service that's contracted by a business to play with their teammates, so they are under no obligation to speak the official language.
The correct analogy is that: There is a community game of whatever where everyone is free to join, and this guy comes in while speaking in a non-official language, and everyone is looking at him funny until one guy tells him "for the love of god, speak English".
Do you think it's justified?
Again, unless the teamwork is seriously being crippled, or that there is this dickbag who purposely goes to sabotage the team communication, otherwise there is literally nothing wrong if you don't speak the official language of whatever as long as there are using work-arounds like pings, or at least they follow the rest of the team.
If you have to have a team that all speak in the same language for clarify purposes, you can simply organise a premade. Solo queues are meant for solo'ers, it's never meant to have perfect communication and coordination.
I am saying that that's what it is like.
There is no "correct analogy" because there could be infinite analogies for the same thing.
Generally, if this is happening, it's because there is a dickbag who purposely does it to sabotage the teams communication. When you ask them to speak english, they say "no, you speak french" or some garbage saying that you should apeal to the vast minority of the NA playerbase.
I personally have never come into contact with anyone on the NA servers that can't speak English if they speak french. 100% of the time my allies aren't speaking english is because they don't want to speak to me, which is hindering to the team as a whole.

Analogy and parallels can only be drawn if the CONTEXT is similar or identical. Otherwise it's called comparing apples to oranges. Just as fried noodles and spaghetti are not the same deal even if they both use noodles, the 2 random scenarios of speaking a particular official language or otherwise is not immediately valid just because the scenes both involve the act of speaking. Again, analogies can only be drawn if the situation is comparable, substitute-able, or even identical contextually.
And no, if someone says "soz no English" and you immediately assume they said so because they're some random dickbags wanting to sabotage the communication without any further proof, it's called a negative-bias, where you assume something or someone (and their actions) you can't understand or are not familiar with, to be against your interest by default. Which is an incredibly bad way of looking at things.
Thirdly, just because you might have never encountered someone who just can't speak English, or that they are so bad at it they don't like using it, or whatever personal reasons they may have but is not out to ruin the party, it doesn't mean the circumstance is not valid or present. After all, general statistics tells us that English speakers is only the 3rd largest population despite vast global uses, behind Mandarin and Spanish speakers, it's obviously likely for someone to encounter others even in English speaking countries who can either not or that they are very bad at English (and like wise for other official languages of whatever places that are more diversely populated). And there is nothing wrong with that.
In fact, there is nothing wrong with it if you just don't want to speak English, as long as the premise is not rooted in trying to disrupt the communication. Just as someone being completely silent, muting everyone at the start of the game etc are all valid personal choices (and no one is ever against it if someone were to make the call) if they use alternatives like pings and actually engage in team work, there is nothing to give a shit about whether or not the person behind a monitor really has an A grade on their most recent English/whatever-official-language exam.
You're going way to deep into this. I don't care about stupid stuff like what an analogy is.
No. I don't assume they're being random dickbags. They literally type out english for the first 2 minutes and then they start typing in french or something else. I know they're not being dickbags becasue remember how I put what they said in quotes? Becasue that's exactly what they said. "No, you learn french" is exactly what they said. That was the first game.
Nuntheless I believe you will understand that my perspective is not your perspective. It's not a language barrier. But rather a motivation barrier. You win a game by communication and playing as a team. You lose a game by cutting players off with a self-made language barrier.

Okay, I see where you're coming from.
yesteraday I played a solo queue game where 7 of the 10 players spoke chinese, interesting.
What about Canadians? some speak french
hablo lo que quiero
