Add an Additional Matchmaking Parameter Based on Behavior
A lot of the threads on the boards complain about toxic players and some even complain about the punishments given to toxic players. When toxicity is a problem, there are a lot of people who suffer the negative consequences. Perhaps the most lamentable are those who play the game with excellent behavior, but are still penalized with losses and a poor game experience. Additionally, the consequences Riot imposes on toxic players are typically punitive (book learnin' time! Punitive: inflicting or intended as punishment) such as longer queue times and withholding end-of-season rewards. Some punishments, like chat restrictions, are somewhat punitive but also intended to protect other players. Riot has stated in the past that they would prefer positive reinforcement of good behavior over negative reinforcement against bad behavior; more proverbial carrot and less proverbial stick.
There is already an honor/report system to keep track of player behavior. Why not also use that system to preferentially match people who usually have good behavior together?
This system could be completely behind the scenes or completely transparent and usable as a way to check yourself and improve your own behavior. MMR would still be the primary matchmaking variable, but if there's 12 guys in queue with identical MMRs and two of them are flagged as real jerks, just match the 10 together in a lobby and the other two can wait for eight more jerks to come along to play with. The system could be protected from abuse with some pretty simple algorithms, like reports from frequent reporters weighing less, large numbers of reports in a single game counting much more strongly, etc. I think some of those things are already in place.
Anyway, this would be a fair way to reward good behavior and a good way to discourage toxic behavior (tired of all the trolls? well you can get away from them when you stop losing your mind and flaming them). Everybody wins.
Worth a shot, right?
