Why did riot even removed Spellvamp?

Back than during the s6 mid season mage updtates riot decided to remove spellvamp from the game. It was a stat which healed for a percentage of dmg you have dealt with you abilities. Kinda like lifesteal but not from autoattacks. Even than it was only avalible on like 2 items, one of which being item 3146 which back than gave you 15% life steal and 15% spellvamp, but they have changed it in to this omnivamp thing. The other item was my forever missed Will of the Ancients. It gave you a passive which healed you for 20% of the dmg you dealt, and it did not count resistances.(Also they encreased the healing on item 3065 by 5%)Kinda like an AP version of item 3812. They decided to remove this item from the game. Theese changes propably happened because Vladimir would have been even more op than he used to be(now hes garbage as we all know). And riot said that they have removed it because nobody used it except vlad. Thast just not true.Ahri Akali AurelionSol Cassiopeia Elise Evelynn Fiddlesticks Heimerdinger Maokai Morgana Rumble old Ryze Swain . Theese champions could all made some use from the spellvamp stat, but they took it from them.(Maybe i missed a few.) They didnt rework it to be in a more viable spot. No they just removed it from every item, and started to take it from champions as a stat, as well. See: Akali Ryze and after her rework, i think shes gonna lose it tooMorgana . The thing i dont really get is why can AD champions heal themselfs with various types of lifesteal, by only a few auto attacks, which are not limited and have no cost. And why mages cant do that anymore, by spells which are limited by some kinda resource and has a cd. It was one of the most unique stats and it made up for some pretty unique playstyles and builds too. The main problem with it was that it could have been built on AD casters, but this could be solved by limiting spellvamp only to work with magic dmg.

Spell Vamp should exist. It is not that hard to build grievous wounds to.

Because it was mainly balanced around Morde and Vlad, nobody else really benefited from it and if it was too strong then vlad and morde were busted and if it was too weak then it was useless and made them weaker. Basically any kind of balance changes with it either made or broke them and it was just too much of a balance nightmare

Sorry to say, but you have it backwards. Morde/Vlad were balanced around spellvamp, not the other way around.

Spellvamp itself was held back because Riot thought mages in general healing in bursts during teamfights was unhealthy.

That, and the extreme variance in effectiveness between champions.

Vlad has used spellvamp items as a crutch since his release. He was never 'strong' with it. He was forced to buy it. Any time he was strong it was not because of the sustain; it was his absurd E base damage (320+) or his R. Even when double WotA meta was around (40% spellvamp via stacking auras), Vlad was not considered strong. It was all Kennen, Rumble, Swain, etc.

That said, there's zero excuse for item 3812 to exist as an item, given their excuses for removing spellvamp.

In addition, Lifesteal has this variance as well, due to auto attack multipliers, range vs melee, and physical on-hits that some champions have, yet this has not been addressed and it still needs to be looked at.

Spell Vamp should be added back into the game, because it was so fun to go full AP Chogath with Spell Vamp.

Because Vlad exists.

I think spell vamp should stay gone, but Lifesteal should be removed too.

Spell Vamp should come back because it was cool. End of story. It opened up a lot of builds and champion versatility. Got a problem with it? Get a Grievous Wounds. Nobody buys that crap anymore unless you're facing a Mundo or Voli anyways. With all the new champs out since then it would be super awesome to try and see how Spell Vamp would change the meta. It's not like you have to give it some psycho ratio and decreasing %'s for AOE or DOT's would be expected anyways. Riot always wants a healthy and dynamic playing field , well imo you don't get that by removing/restricting the game, you get it by adding and evolving it.

My boi mages are getting out traded by these super sustained tanks that can eventually out damage you in the long run.

Everyone will tell you it's vlad or morde.

No.

It's Amumu, Sejuani, Zac, etc. 33% effectiveness on aoe spells doesn't really help either.

WoonStruck1 votes

No, its literally every mage mid.

Riot has stated that mages burst healing in teamfights is not healthy "in their opinion".

In addition, it leads to stale laning where both sides just afk clear and never fall low enough to punish.

Problem with Riot stating this is that everyone gets nuked from 100-0 pretty much any time something happens, which means spellvamp would be a bad stat for mages either way.

Honestly, you could probably pull up a Riot post saying what you claimed, and I could find one saying what I claimed because Riot has said both. I'm saying it's more towards the tank draining because while siphoning off minions of assassins resetting health is bad, aoe tanks deal a shit ton of damage to everyone. They're already hard to kill, and unlike assassins who kill one target and then wait a while, the tank just soaks more and more damage while siphoning off everyone in a fight.

Plus, if Grievous Wounds is the answer to this, who is more fragile: an assassin or a tank?

The difference is that auto-attacks are all the same between champions. How do you balance Ryze getting healed off of his machine-gunning of spells with Karthus' multi-man nuke? Sure, you could argue that spell-vamp isn't a stat that should be built on everybody, but if spell-vamp ever became a good stat why not build it on Syndra to heal a couple hundred health from your ult, or double down on Ahri's innate healing? You could be a Cassiopeia with the most healing EVER. And then of course there's Mordekaiser and Vlad, but everyone knows THOSE assholes. Because spell vamp, by its very nature, scales with an insane amount of things, it's nearly impossible to build it in such a way as to be balanced, and even then it would probably still be broken for a select few (SWAIN.)

They're not the same between all champions though.

Some champions have various auto attack multipliers (even AS steroids), and some champions have physical on-hits.

This makes lifesteal on those champions far more effective than lifesteal on others, even if the weaker builds full AD and uses 2 lifesteal items.

At least they're the same PRINCIPLE. Spells have so many different structures to them; they can be single target, they can radiate from single targets to other single targets or just in an AoE around the target, they can be AoE around the caster, they can target another area and deal damage in an AoE, they can shoot out in a line and damage everything in the line or just the first thing in that line or even just the first champion in that line. Their ranges can be incredible short, be roughly auto attack ranged, longer ranged like the space between towers, or even literally global, again with all those same strange ways they can target. They have base damages that are wildly varied with scalings that also vary incredibly. There's no realistic way to balance all of these factors into spell vamp.

WoonStruck1 votes
  1. Ranged vs melee can be compared to single target vs AoE.

AoE's effectiveness was reduced on spellvamp/slows due to how easy it was to apply; ranged autos are significantly easier to apply than melee.

2)Physical on-hits can be compared to single target vs DoT.

DoT's effectiveness was reduced on spellvamp due to how much base damage they have. The difference here is the physical on-hits are more significant because their payout isn't delayed. Its just as instantaneous as a normal auto. If anything, it should have a harsher penalty than DoTs for the on-hit portion.

  1. Intrinsic attackspeed/AA-multipliers can be compared to the champions with low cd, single target abilities that made much, much greater use of spellvamp.

Situations like these made it so spellvamp was basically too useful or not useful enough on any given champion depending on if they were high CD, AoE (Lux) or low CD, single target (Akali before she was ever gutted early in the game's life).

#My point is that lifesteal needs to be properly tuned/gated, not that spellvamp should return, btw.

Vladimir rework mainly. If SV was still in the game, he would never die

Spell Vamp was in essential item in off setting the health cost for certain spells on Champions like mordekaiser and Vlad.
