Where do people get the idea that zyra is a control/utility mage.

When she plays exactly the opposite?

she has the biggest 6 power spike among mages. high cc high burst damage high sustained damages only other champ that comes close is viktor.

A. Because Riot said so at one point

B. Because she's like Heimerdinger and was one of Riot's attempt at a minion-master champ

C. Because she controls areas by spawning plants and offers utility like her root and knock-up to help her team even if she doesn't itemize for damage

I've always understood the concept of creating a structure within gameplay that helps you as utility, and depending on the magnitude of the structure it could affect map control or even positioning in team fight settings. What are you suggesting she is?

Because her ult is a massive AoE knock up, she has an AoE snare, plants to zone people, one of which also slows?

She has minor utility so I can see why that is questionable, but she's definitely a control mage.

Her zoning is some of the best in the game. Azir probably outclasses her still.

I agree she can burst people down fairly quickly, but her core gameplay is poke/control.

Having CC is part of being a control mage (control = crowd + zone). Zyra having an AOE knockup, an AOE snare and targeted perma-slows, combined with the zoning potential of both the knockup and her plants in general, makes her a control mage.

Probably because four of her five skills provide fairly significant zone-control.
