So this item should basically not be a first item choice because of how far behind your damage will be in comparison to Infinity Edge or Essence Reaver.

Dude, it's a defensive item.

Defensive items aren't supposed to give as much damage as offensive items.

If you want more damage, don't buy a defensive item...

That doesn't mean it can't be better. It's just a worse option compared to the others.

Edit: I'm not saying it should offer the same damage output as an IE or ER because, yes, those items are more offensive in nature. I'm saying that it isn't nearly as viable as those items because it the lacks other damage multipliers that IE and ER contain.

Strategic diversity- you choose what you need and your choices have meaning.

BF Sword items should be comparable because they all branch from the same component

Infinity Edge is the option for pure auto attack damage and crit. Essence Reaver is for abilities and cdr. And bloodthirster is for sustain. If you auto attack more than you use abilities you go with IE and if you use a lot of abilities you go for ER. Bloodthirster is a defensive option, yes, but it is outclassed by the other options because it has no other damage multipliers; meaning it is not a competitive option against the other BF counterparts. Just because it is more defensive item in comparison to the other doesn't mean it should be this outclassed by similar items. It needs crit to compete as a marksman item.

Hm, when you put it like that you make a fair point.

Is it not good as a second item? Not all items are equal when it comes to being rushed first.

I think it also generally fails as a second item because of the necessity to multiply the damage from your first item over again with attack speed and additional crit. Zeal items will typically always be the better second item option. Bloodthirster is currently a third item option at best.
