@Meddler, are you guys planning to work on starting itemization for tanks?

Melledoneus··19 votes·660 views

Doran's shield is outclassed by every other starting item and it is an utter waste of gold because of its lack of stats. I was hoping we could get starting defensive items for the top lane so we don't have to build items with flat stats. Any news on that?

What doran should be

+6 flat health regen per 5 seconds

UNIQUE: Blocks 8 damage from basic attacks and single target abilities from champions. This effect is doubled against ranged damage

(you might have to play around with the numbers or increase health regen )

I've been buying item 3053 on Sion for a while. I simply feel like it gives me more tankyness than some pure tank items (In the situation I'm buying it in.)

The burst shield is nice, but I definitely wouldn't rush it.

Those situations are usually when I'm getting my 3d or 4th item =P

+80 health Passive - Restores 1% maximum health every 5 seconds. Unique Passive - Shield yourself for 3% maximum health, refreshing if you have not taken damage in the last 10 seconds.

ChaosThief1 votes

So restore 5 health (roughly) every 5 seconds

And shield somewhere around 15-20 health every 10 seconds of not taking damage.

I mean, it can work, but those numbers are a bit underhelming.

TTK Dreadnought2 votes

the difference is that doran shield can scale.

and i simply forgot to leave the +80health there. which would make it 6hp/5sec at level one but would increase over time and with items lvl 6 nautilus with bami cinder would be 13hp/5sec

and i did 3% because it was a low number although 5% would be do-able. 10% falls under malphite and i didnt want that.

Doran blade and doran rings both scale well with their respective champions in some way, while doran shield doesnt scale at all. Those mid laners who go triple doran rings? or the ADC who gets double blades?

Doran's items shouldn't scale into game. They're meant to help you survive the laning phase. Flat HP regen and flat shield would definitely be better. If you want an item that scales, you should start with a cloth armor or ruby crystal instead.

TTK Dreadnought2 votes

item 1055 scales and you often keep it until mid game. and Doran ring, while it doesnt scale in the same way, you're not gonna sell a doran ring as early as a doran shield. plus, people have inscentive to buy 2 or 3 of doran ring and doran blade, but never doran shield. nevertheless bother to buy 1 doran shield.

I almost always just start item 1029 item 2003 x3 or item 1036 item 2003 x2

nearly every game top (I play a lot of Darius)

Melledoneus1 votes

Yeah, but sometimes we need more than just 15 armor or 150 HP. A damage reduction or a mixture of those stats would be much preferred.

I feel ya, I've been wanting item 1055 and item 1054 to be relevant in the top lane again for awhile and I suppose item 1056 but that's more a niche pick in the top yaknow?

Anways, the dorans items have become very limited to specific lanes recently. item 1056 for mid and very limited picks top, item 1055 for adc. The problem is that they aren't really relevant top anymore as the item 1029 or item 1036 start with pots is a much better option given it's sustain + raw stats. The only matchup I take item 1054 is when I'm against a Vlad, but that's about it.

I kinda got off topic but long story short, ya I agree with you. Starting items are kind of bad right now for top laners

Dorans blade is relevant.

Dorand shield isnt.

Starting item for tanks is Hunter's Talisman.

Riot doesn't need to make better Doran's Shield for tanks. Tanks don't belong in the top lane. They get bullied easily especially with new keystones and stacking Strength of Ages is way too slow in lane.

Melledoneus4 votes

I hope you realize Hunter's Talisman is freaking useless without smite. Not to mention unbuyable.

Also, tanks DO belong in the top lane. Sure, they give up lane power, but they shouldn't be deterred from farming completely just because their enemy happens to be ranged or Yasuo.

Tanks don't belong in top lane. You can't buy Cinderhulk in top lane. You are literally gimping your health by going top instead of jungle.

There is no advantage to going as a tank top when you could just as easily jungle with ALL of them.

Melledoneus2 votes

Actually, if you really think about it, you get more resistances or utility going top than if you go jungle. You could easily replace item 1409 with item 3512 item 3190 item 3083 or item 3800 for starters.

There is no class in the game that is forced to go jungle, and Riot never intended for it to be that way. Raw health bonus is nice, but it's only to make up for the lack of a 6th item.

Yes. It's a much better mid game tool. Mid game is when tanks shine brightest.

Also you aren't at risk to get ganked as an immobile champion (which tanks usually are) and you don't have to worry about Riven or Renekton all inning you at level 2.

Gnar, Quinn, Yas and Ekko will all pin you down top as well.

Laning as a tank isn't fun. All you do is try not to fall too far behind in CS. Jungling is way better.

I think the best designed starting item right now is Doran's Ring. It provides a bundle of good stats and a decent passive that can be stacked if you need it when falling behind.

going to make a Health regen comparison

Doran's shield heals 6 HP every 5 seconds. That's 72 HP a minute.

While Corupting potion heals 125 hp per charge and holds 3 changes for a total of 375 total HP.

It would take over 5 minutes of play for Doran's shield to offer the same level of healing as Corrupting potion. (Assuming you don't back in that time frame, refilling you potion)

Would a good tank last that long in lane? (probably not, and with TP and corupting potion, you may not have to.) Do the other consesions from Doran's shield make up for that fact? (not likely when compared to the mana regen and damage offered by corrupting potion)

And final question, to insure that we don't go to far the other way. (and make Corrupting potion worthless) What can Doran's shield offer that stands out?

Well technically

item 1054 + 1 item 2003 / item 2010 is the same cost as a item 2033.

The difference being the potion is one time use obviously

The Doran's shield also prevents some damage from occurring to you as well

Probably wouldn't be a fair assessment to include other consumables. mainly because Corrupting potion refills upon revisiting the shop while a regular potion will require more gold. So to that end, Corupting potion is going to be a better option as the game goes on. If Doran's shield was made to be the converse of that, then it should be the best Level 1 option to go for. This could be the case with the damage mitigation.

If we wanted to quantify the damage mitigation, the 8 damage blocked could be compare to regening 8 health. Or 80 HP after blocking 10 attacks.

10 attacks might be a bit much, except maybe in an extended trade. You might think it was the option for someone who wanted to go ham, except 8 hp an attack doesn't compare to the 10 HP a second regen from corupting potion. (Since champs arn't going to have greater that 1.0 attacks per second, in addition to Corupting potion's damage effect)

The only other way I could see Doran's shield being better is if you were in a crowd. (Which doesn't usually happen in the laning phase.)
