High skill cap champions are popular because...

...they have high skill caps. I mean people constantly talk about their play rates, and how they are played too much. But the fact is they are fun and have growth potential. How many people would rather spend their time mastering Garen over Riven or Ashe over Vayne? I love Ashe by the way. That is beside the point, more people are bound to play more often things they can grow with and that have somewhere to go with. They are less likely to invest in things that have no growth potential.

What is more, they are fun and offer a challenge. Pulling off a successful play on a difficult champion, is going to be much more pleasing to the average person than pulling off a successful play on a point and click champion.

They also have options, you can choose to do more than one linear action.

Now! I am not saying they are better designs, well... they might be. But just don't get the wrong idea, I main Shyvana, very linear. I also enjoy Ashe and Soraka. But I know for a fact that the champions I play have very limited growth in terms of skill cap, low options in game and have more linear gameplay.

So understand, just because champions with more mechanics, or even who are just flashy like Ahri, are played a lot. That doesn't make them OP. No I am not justifying any particular case. But some champions with high skill caps are OP, some with low skill caps are OP. But more people are GOING to choose high skill cap, fun, flashy champions who are viable, and invest more time into them. Because it has more inherent value for fun and growth.

I can agree that it's so much fun playing a Champion that can do a lot of things like Ahri, Lee Sin, or Yasuo, but even ones that are simple can offer a lot of enjoyment.

Personally, I've hit that top point of playing the fox myself, yet I also like playing Ashe and Lux who have low skill caps. Lots of mechanics are fun, yet less are just as good.

That is actually not true. A lot of champions with high skill caps such as master yi at high elo have close to no playrate. Playrates correspond with which champions are the most overpowered.

Hitting q before being hit by cc, and auto attacking aren't really high skill cap, even if timed well.

Master Yi has a Difficulty of 4... that's not at ALL a HIGH SKILL.

This is why all my accounts have assassins as my most played champs even though the winrates are garbo compared to the next highest champ.

I enjoy the simpler champs tbh. Less focus on my own character nechanics meant I have more time to assess a situation or pay more attention to the map. I never really went in for the whole higher mechanical characters beyond a few rare standouts.

I honestly miss the days of early seasons playing nunu support and being viable because everything was simple. Seems like all the simple champs with point click either get nerfed or reworked into skill shot champs. And I absolutely hate that. When I play Taric I wanna dazzle on demand! Sure new Taric is fun but the old one was so RELIABLE. He did what I wanted when I wanted it.

High skill champs are fine as long as they dont become overloaded or too rewarding for mastering them. In these cases its either learn this character or perform below optimum potential and in a game with over 100 playable characters thats absolutely not ok. The simple champs need to be just as effective as the high skill cap champs or there just isnt a point to playing them.

I also miss being able to play Rammus jungle :(

I favor simple champs, but those with depth. Like Anivia, not Annie. Champions like Anivia are just so well designed, and offer a lot despite being so straight forward.
