Why I hate the new Essence Reaver even though it looks awesome

As I look on the new stats of the item, I like having an item with those stats in the game. That part looks cool. However I hate the new essence reaver mainly because it isn't what most people wanted. Most people wanted something like item 3114 added to the build path and leaving it mostly the same. It was an item that allowed me to restore mana and health as I AAed and gave me a little CDR. I liked it on both ADCs and a few bruisers. The final stats weren't the big deal (even if BT overshined it some), the problem was getting the item finished when you needed mana. You couldn't rush it on most ADCs and even if you did, by the time you were finished, mana wasn't typically an issue.

I mean I'm looking at the stats now and 65AD, 20% crit, and up to 30% cdr is pretty good, I'll admit. However, riot linked the mana to critical strikes and then they dropped the health sustain so this is a completely different item. A lot of people didn't want something completely different for this item. I can't remember anyone telling riot that ER had to be the must buy item for all ADCs.

Even though the new version is better overall even without the passive, it's stuff like this that makes me wonder what's really going on at riot and how much the teams are paying attention to things and how much they are living in fantasy land.

Also, let's be honest about the new version: it doesn't fix the chief complaint of the old one. I'm still getting my mana way too late for the mana part to be a big draw for most champs. So riot ignored the big problem and then they tacked on Crit to encourage people to buy it sooner. Well guess what? In terms of raw damage output, I see IE still being the preferable choice as a first item because bigger crits are better than 10% cdr on most ADCs. Because you don't get the big boost to CDR until you get another crit item and because you don't get your mana earlier to encourage you to buy ER first, I still see IE as being the go-to item for many ADCs. ER feels like a follow up item, but then it's got another problem: ADCs are probably going to want either a zeal item or a sustain item after their IE.

I think that's the fatal flaw of this newer, probably better version of ER. Yes it pushes IE for a slot, but it doesn't give me what I need (sustain) when I need it (early when mana is a bigger problem) which is exactly the same probably as the current version. Let's be honest, you are only going to think about ER for either the mana or CDR. You don't get mana until you've completed the item (and the amount you get will be low, slow, and irregular). Also you don't get the CDR until you've got more crit from another item. I think these things are going to compound to push this item into getting bought later than riot is hoping it would because the core issue is still around: wrong build path.

So if I don't need to rush this item first over an IE on most ADCs, when do I get it? Zeal/sustain comes next. Then comes the other. Don't forget boots. You need armor pen as well. The game is probably going to be over before you need this. If the game lasts to you getting six items, I don't think buying an ER is going to be your biggest issue as a player.

Well what about ranged casters then? Well Ez and urgot are still probably rushing manamune first. I don't play either, do they need a second mana item? Others might get a TF first. Now I could see the new TF into a new ER but I don't see a lot of ADCs going that route. So we are still left where we were before: this is a niche item. I think it'll be great on corki, but that's about it.

And therein lies the problem, it's a radical change but in the end I think it's still the same in terms of being pushed out by other items on your traditional ADC kit.

Fuck what most people wanted. If the Boards wanted it then it was probably bad for the game.

Essence Reaver was meant to support caster AD carries. Riot tried to do this by making it eliminate mana costs after it was purchased, but that's not actually worth shit past a certain point in the game. It was just an early-game spam item that lost purpose as the game went on because AD carries couldn't get any other sources of CDR (and a basic rule of CDR is that it sucks unless you can stack it). They could have chosen to have it mitigate mana costs earlier, but then you're just shoving it into an early game lane stomping role. It's not helping caster carries that way, it's just an early game item.

The way it is now, it actually supports caster carries by giving them enough CDR that their abilities can be the main focus of their play. It gives a bit of mana sustain to help alleviate the burden of increased spell spamming, but that gets to be a secondary function, just like it should be. It's not a sustain item anymore, it's just a caster item, and that's exactly what we needed.

Also you don't get the CDR until you've got more crit from another item.

You're overestimating this problem. All you need is a zeal and you're at max CDR from the item. That's a very minor period of relative weakness. People are buying it first a lot right now. It's IE that's actually fallen off. BT rush is more common than IE rush nowadays.

A lot of people didn't want something completely different for this item.

And a lot of people did. I wanted an item I could build on Lucain or Graves or Corki to support spell usage over straight autoattacking. Now I have it. Couldn't be happier. I didn't want an item that only served as a mana source for the laning phase while becoming inferior to all other items as the game went on, which is exactly what Essence Reaver was and all it ever could be so long as it stayed the way it was.

Its good on caster adc like graves actually its mianly good on graves now, as graves doesnt really need any attackspeed that much and you could actually rush this item followed by IE. It might also be good on gp triforce + essence reaver for 40% crit and 40% cdr from 2 items seems very strong but by the time he gets it he wont need the mana anymore.

With the new masteries health sustain isnt a big problem, and if you want you can get meditation as tier 4 mastery by putting 12 in the utility/jungle tree.

Honestly i dont see urgot building this unless for some weird trolly build, as it requires more crit which doesnt often come with alot of ad unless IE. But urgots advantage is range with q sure the mana sustain and cdr are good but auto attacking is risky in a fight. his q also doesnt work with crits so its a partially wasted stat. Maybe ez can use it idk i already bought it on ez cos it worked with his q which it now probably wont. Same for jayce i guess.

Most champion wanting this item cant effectively use it anymore. Those wo can wont even need it. Theres maybe 3 champs who somewhat benefit from this item, Gangplank, lucian, graves. And they are the only ones i think with gangplank not even really needing the item

This item was made with Ezreal in mind. ER + TF = 40% cdr.

Problem I see with this post is you're focusing on ADC's... pretty much what we're asking Riot not to do.

Could work on Gangplank, could work on AD/hybrid Evelynn, might work on Urgot though tbh probably not because of the lowered AD, and it could work on Ezreal quite well because even mid game he has mana problems, and seeing as his Q would proc the passive it would work very well.

It's not good on Urgot solely because he really, really, really doesn't want to get close enough to auto attack unless it's to ult you. He's going to want Manamune & Death's Dancer.

Tru. Still, there's others. Draven specifically. It works right now on Draven and with the new crit it will give him more burstyness while keeping up his mana.

ER will be favored over IE for caster AD carries because a) its the same cost as IE now, b) it gives mana back (has 20% crit chance on its own), and c) lots of CDR if you build more crit, or a little CDR if you don't build more crit.

Please remember that ER gives back 3% of your max mana every crit. So with just ER you get back 3% of your total apx every 5th AA. Adding in one more crit chance item can easily get you to 40 or 50% crit. And most of those items will now be 2500 gold, which is pretty affordable.

Then you can upgrade that tear to manamune and do tons fo damage while never running out of mana ever again.

You know who else might really like this new ER? Vi. She is always running out of mana, uses a mix of spells and AAs, and benefits from AD, CDR, and crit. Or she can just go TF like usual.

Pretty much anyone with good AD scaling, mana costs, and AAs will benefit from it. I can see it being picked on Skarner and Udyr for example.

Riot basically just looked at this and Trinity Force and said EZREAL EZREAL EZREAL EZREAL Corki too I guess? EZREAL EZREAL

And didn't really look at the main problems of the item.

Actually it's 10% CDR by itself. It doesn't get CDR from it's own crit chance, for obvious reasons.

ER isn't supposed to replace mana as a mechanic; this is why they've said there will never be a "mini-Reaver". You need to manage mana just because you're a champion that has mana, it's one of the gating mechanics to make sure you don't have oppressive power with ability spam.

ER is supposed to lighten that load, to let you get out a lot more abilities before you have to back; it's not there to erase mana as a gating mechanic.

What does this mean with regards to build order? It means that new ER is just fine as a first or second buy. You can buy it first if you already have the advantages of high AD (because you bought a BF sword first) or 10% CDR (because you bought a Caufield's Warhammer first) and you want the mana passive. You can buy it first if you expect to be buying crit soon (a single 800g cloak of agility or 1200g Zeal caps the passive). You can buy it second if you need Triforce first, pretty much. ER is a great rush item now on casters, which are who it's for.

It doesn't have to do literally everything to be a great item, or a great first item.
