Shen always has his taunt and his ult means his adc shouldn't lose an all in vs all in trade.
Both scale well to a 5 v 5 teamfight, more than thresh, braum anyone else you can think of. Because they are utility tanks :(

But if they do make it then it's GG cause his mid (10 min) game is better than the other supports. Same goes for shen. They become unkillable tanks that WANT you to target them.

And I also lost trades when I was playing Shen. If a support would guarantee you winning trades all the time, you could be sure that almost everybody will select him as a support. Anyway, Shen is very good as a support. I played 36 games with him and I won 24, so it's pretty good. He has the taunt, the sustain in lane for you and the adc from his Q, the ult(so you can have a great global presence and turn 1v1 in a 1v2 in your favor). Also, his W that add more tankyness. I played Malphite too, he's good as a support and great in teamfights, but if you got an adc with suicidal tendencies, then Malphite isn't the best choice, because you can't protect your adc as good as other supports.
