What happened to maokai?

What made him disappear from top and jungle (his only roles)? I wouldn't think malphite was the reason. Maokai was a super good tank and still is (arguably better than malphite due to his passive aa heal) He had cc disruption too... What made maokai gone from top? Not good enough early and mid (laning?) Not enough jungle damage (jungle?)

Maokai is a good top and jungler. I'm not sure what you are talking about.

In ranked at gold level or any level I don't see him in ranked that much anymore.

Probably, people realized that he's not as good in uncoordinated yoloqueue environments as in bigger premades.

E changes took of 25 damage per rank, and W caps the % damage to creeps at a value lower than his old W would deal with AP. Maokai was always good at fighting, and he was always bad at killing creeps. After changes, he's a bit better at fighting, and absolute garbage at killing creeps.

He got the snot knocked out of him with the nerf bat, that is what. Malphite is stronger right now (I play both frequently, my two favorite champions) because his damage is better and his initiation is SOO GOOOOD. Maokai doesn't deal any real damage anymore, and that is problematic for him. Sure he is a tank with a ton of utility, but when another tank (Who actually hard counters most ADCs) does his job, just better, then yes he will fall off. This isn't to say Maokai is bad (He's not, I still enjoy playing him, just like before the buffs) it is just to say that he isn't number one at his job right now. Malphite and Maokai also serve veeery different roles throughout the game, Maokai is all about team fight utility and CC, while Malphite is better at Hard engage and burst damage output.
