AP item buff idea - Rod of Ages

Before the changes to mage items in the S6 mid season, Catalyst of the Protector (and Rod of Ages as its upgrade) used to have a passive that gave mana (and HP) back on leveling up. This passive made Catalyst a valuable buy for mages in lane, on their way to the full Rod of Ages.

After the changes, Catalyst gives HP on mana expenditure (good for mages, as a form of sustain) and mana on damage taken (less good for mages).

So, seeing as the mana return on leveling passive was an important part of Rod of Ages, why not return it?

Version 1:

Rod of Ages

Builds from item 3802 and item 3010 and item 1052 - total cost 2800 - 3000 gold

300 HP (500 after stacking) 600 Mana (700 after stacking) 60 AP (100 after stacking)

Passives as currently (Eternity, stacking)

Version 2:

Rod of Ages

Builds from item 3802 and item 3010 and item 3108 - total cost 3100 - 3200 gold

300 HP (500 after stacking) 600 Mana (700 after stacking) 60 AP (100 after stacking) 10% CdR

Passives as currently (Eternity, stacking)

Version 2 is more powerful with the CdR, but also more expensive. It is supposed to serve as an alternative to item 3165 - less CdR, no Grievous Wounds and more expensive, but also a good chunk of HP, more mana and the sustain passive.

RoA isn't intended for squishy mages. It is intended for AP champions who like to get in the middle of things like Amumu Blitzcrank ChogathGalio Gragas Kassadin Maokai Singed Swain . The mana/health exchange mechanics are great for the champions I listed who both take a lot of damage and spend a lot of mana. With a lot of these champions now taking Abysal Mask now though, I wouldn't be opposed to a change but I don't think it is needed.

Catalyst already gives you enough sustain in lane as its passive gives back both mana and HP. RoA is already a fine item on its own, the problem with the item is, it needs to stack for it to be really good. With the meta making Mages becoming more utility-focused, rushing other items are far more efficient than RoA. The item is still good though especially against bursty champions like Zed, Le Blanc, and Talon to name a few.
