Just curious as to the thoughts of the community on a well thought out Ranked System
I have always said this and I will say it again, it should be much easier to demote in the game. I do not think it should be as impossible as it is currently to demote out of gold. I also think there should be something promoting wins, as right now it doesn't really matter how much you lose, you can climb to diamond with a 40% win rate, no freaking joke, if the losses are spaced out enough its actually possible.
I have also always said the MMR system needs to be changed. It doesn't do what it is supposed to do. I have also always said that the system needs to stop placing people so high who are brand new to the game. Also the system needs to take into effect how well you are doing in games, not just whether you win or lose.
The end result under a system I would propose, is less people in silver and gold and more people in bronze. On top of which you make it possible to demote between Bronze 5 and Gold 5. This makes it so the ranked system has integrity, if you are performing badly you should be punished for it. If you are performing well you should be rewarded for it. Hell in Starcraft when I came back, my MMR had decayed so much and I won my first game against a Masters level player, and got 800 MMR for the win when the normal MMR is 20. Now of course things are different in a team based game, and I understand going off of W/L only as it will make sure that the system cannot possibly be abused. However there are very complex ways to make this work out:
- Every new player to the game regardless of series gets placed Bronze 5. This needs to happen for the integrity of Ranked.
- Remove the option to Duo across all ranks, not just Challenger. This again needs to happen to make sure that what you earn, is of your own play. I have personally duo'd with friends that would not have gotten to gold without my help this season, one of them Platinum and immediately fell into gold after I stopped for a while.
- You can only get placed in a game with people in your division rank. That means if you are in Silver 4, you will get placed with 9 silver 4's. In series you will be placed into a game of the division higher than you. So in this situation, your Silver 4->3 series will be played in a silver 3 game. For series I would do this alot differently as I believe in one thing: Series should be done in a way where your record is not the only thing that determines if you pass. I would implement a system where you have to get the 2 wins, or 3 in league promotion series, but you also have to maintain the same performance standard you usually do. Because you are playing in a slightly higher tier game, you should be required to perform on par with your norm in those games to promote. Even if you 3-0, if you didn't perform well enough, sorry you get to go through it again. The last thing would be that Series can be repeated again and again until you pass. No having to grind between series failures.
- Add the ability to demote across all divisions, and make it equivalent to demote across all divisions.
- At the start of a season, place people where they were at the end of the season, except obviously put all the challenger players into masters. Under this system there is no reason to reset the ladder.
- It becomes 5 wins to get to series, instead of an LP system. 5 more wins than losses. This will work on a counter system, which will be able to go negative. Reach +5 and you are in series, reach -3 and you are demoted (these numbers have actually been well thought out by me for a while now).
Overall I feel like this isn't the whole system I would go with, but it is definitely a good outline and should give people a good idea as to how I am thinking. I want integrity of the competitive scene back again, because that is seriously lacking. Everyone is climbing and that just shouldn't be the case. As you can see with what I have listed, MMR disappears. There is no reason for it anymore. Instead it is entirely based on your ability to win games, and in series, your ability to perform as well as win games. If you are climbing, and winning games back to back, you will be rewarded with a +2 on any win past 3 in a row, and a loss streak will be punished with a -2 after 3 in a row.
I think #1 is something that is absolutely needed at this point, I see too many new players still learning in games where they just get crushed. ,#2 I think might make people really angry, but it needs to be removed if ranked is to work as a competitive environment. ,#3 is difficult to implement and I completely understand that. It means longer queue times, I know I wouldn't care about the longer queue times, but I know there are alot who would. But if this was implemented, nobody can complain about teammates anymore, because they are right where they belong if they have been there longer than 50 games. ,#4 again might make people angry, but this has to happen for the integrity of the competitive scene. It is ridiculous with how troll I was playing that I climbed to gold from S5 with a 45% win rate in less than 200 games. That is ridiculous to me. ,#5 would make alot of people happy, we all know that the current reset is super annoying because it sucks to climb to where you have already proven you can succeed at. But right now that reset has to happen, under this system it doesn't have to anymore because MMR no longer exists. ,#6 I gave alot of thought into how many wins and how many losses. I left it at +5 and -3 because it should be hard to climb if you aren't innately better than where you are. -3 is debatable, I don't know if that is too harsh.
I would like to hear thoughts, not just "no that wont work", I want to hear why it wouldn't work. I have had 7 accounts now ranging from Bronze 5 to Challenger during my 6 year tenure with the game, and up until Season 4, the game felt competitive, now it just feels like everyone is aimlessly grinding, and I feel there should be more to it than just play as many games as you can because you will climb by doing that. At least I feel that this system is worth a chat over, maybe I'm the only one xD
