Why are players punished for winning games?

Ulquiorra0123··116 votes·4,789 views

I want to hear a response from Riot on this because this has gotten to a point of stupidity now. How is it that I can go 7-0 with decent teammates, and then immediately after that win streak see 20 games that are borderline unwinnable because teammates just get destoyed solo. The MMR difference in the last two games was about 200 on average in favor of the enemy team. Now I understand that winning alot of games boosts MMR alot, but I shouldn't be punished with innately worse teammates just because I'm decent at the game. I cannot stop an Ornn from getting solo killed 5 times in 8 minutes without having the godly ability of future sight, but it is almost like you expect players to have this ability while climbing. Like I had a game where my top laner got destroyed solo by a Tryndamere, and did very well for me and my team in that game, I did damn well everything to win that game and delayed a long time, but alas cannot stop people from split pushing top while they are taking bot and mid inhib... The next game I got that tryndamere on my team and we completely roflstomped the enemy team into oblivion just purely because I got fed from the same good play as the game before and he was competent enough to not die 12 times in 10 minutes. The difference between the two games though is insane, one is a complete and utter loss and the other is a complete and utter win. Why? Because one game had teammates that completely got destroyed, and the other they went even and I was allowed to let my skill show.

I am almost positive the issue here is that the game matches on MMR alone and that means that anyone on a win streak will get punished heavily by having 5 enemies better than your 4 allies because your MMR is in a different division. But that Isn't fair and completely destroys the concept of climbing. You should be matched based on division not MMR or anything like that. This isn't a 1v1 game, we do not have control over the game as a whole. If I am strictly better than my MMR, I should be climbing, not scrounging for wins just because teammates are at a distinct disadvantage PURELY BECAUSE I AM ON THEIR TEAM. I do not blame my teammates either, it isn't their fault that the game matchmakes a gold 4 enemy to a silver 4 ally... yes this happens, and it happens alot.

Of course this is speaking from experience, but it seems like I win every single game where the MMR is even in teammates and enemies, and lose every game where it isn't. And more often than not, the games are even after a loss streak, and incredibly imbalanced on a win streak. I feel like at this point it doesn't come down to how well I play, and more how well the game was matchmade, and that to me is just unfair. My ability to play the game should matter, not a dice roll on whether the game wanted to screw me out of a win or not. I guess onto another 18-23 games where I tank MMR with every game being unwinnable...

TLDR; Wins and Losses alike just feel unsatisfactory because I have no impact on either. Losses come down to teammates being worse than the opponents, and wins come down to me just being better than the enemy in my position and my teammates going even. Matchmaking sucks, I like hard games, but not unwinnable ones.

I think a part of why matchmaking gets screwed up is because of duos. Instead of matching each player to a similar MMR as their own, the game matches each team to average the MMRs.

If you have a duo on either side, it screws up the average MMR and forces the other team to get a disproportionately worse or better person matched up, which can skew the game results drastically.

Even without duos though, the game matches average MMR for the whole team, so a team of, in this example, all 1000 MMR, can be matched with a team that has MMRs 800 800 800 800 1800 because they have the same averages.

If an 1800 and an 800 are duoing, each should be matched independently. Even if each player isn't matched per role, at least it would ensure the same skill level is represented on each side.

This is it 100%.

The current system sucks ass. The only way to rank up is to grind ENDLESSLY and get lucky with teammates not throwing. And while players that have wasted the time needed to grind up in ranks will defend their investment, anyone looking at this objectively can admit that ELO for 5v5, with MMR matchmaking, is a shit system.

I want a system that measures MY SKILL, not my PATIENCE with a trash system.

This reminds me of how another trash game, MADDEN, works with turning up the difficulty. Instead of making the opponent better, they make your AI teammates worse (ie, slow, weak, cant block, cant catch). Its stupid.

If you're beating players the SAME RANK as you easily, you should rank up. Not stay the same rank and get worse teammates. That makes no sense at all.

its the same for me but its relevant to how close i get to gold 5, i once had 11 bad teams in a row, got to silver 3, started winning again, nearly got out of silver 3, bad teams again

It's probably because they're using the same matchmaking algorithm as Overwatch which the developers have even admitted to saying they want their players staying at a 50% win ratio all the time. This means that players get matched into games where it's just impossible to win.

At this point all the ranked system is a fucking grind, nothing else.

In season 5 I got to gold 2 in like 50 games after my placement games (was placed somewhere in silver no idea tha number), this season I got to gold 5 in 30-35 games from silver 2 placements and kept getting fucked afterwards, most fun thing is every time I got to promos I had to play with people who are in their promos to plat 4 and 3.

One way to keep up a win streak is if you get people who are on a lose streak because of the matchmaking and not because of incompetence.

Starcraft243ver21 votes

Wrong. Check the ELO system which has been taken from chess. The goal is not to force you at 50%. The goal is to match you versus opponents against who you have 50% chances to win.

If you starts winning more. It puts you against better opponents. Which reduces your chances to win. The goal is to put you against your class of opponents. And guess what ? If you are matched against someone who perfectly matches your skill level : you'll win one game out of 2. Which is 50%.

The system doesnt lower your mates to help you lose or win. The actual proof for this is : top elo players have over 70-80% winrate. If the system wanted you to stay at 50% winrate, it would take the highest winrate players in the game, match them with four D5 players against 5 D1 players and thus lowering their winrate.

Guess what, it doesnt work like that.

CytheGuy2 votes

So the system is still broken, is what you're saying, or rather not saying. If you win a lot, it boosts your MMR. That's a no brainer. Therefore, you get matched against better opponents because now your MMR is higher and so is theirs. What you never said was that the system also matches you with teammates who have an innately higher MMR than the average player at your level. So if this is not the case, then the ladder is still broken, Riot encourages solo carrying, and Riot also wants to take away some of the team aspect of a game designed to be played using teamwork.

I play both Chess and League. The difference between Chess/League is that with Chess, you alone determine your outcome - win/lose/draw. It's a 1v1 game, where you make all the decisions.

League? Not so much. If I'm playing in the bot lane I have no say if my top laner gets ROFL-stomped to oblivion. It's a 5v5 game and should be treated as such.

It is, thats why you climb faster than chest system with just 52% win rate. 5v5 make 50% more consistent.

So why do you deserve to win over the enemy top laner? That guy just won lane too, why should you win for winning lane and not him?

Also, you can't just be like "my top laner is bad ugh Riot".

People have different playstyles. Maybe your idea of winning lane is maybe getting more CS, maybe 1 kill. Maybe he plays super aggro and 1/2 of games he feeds and 1/2 of games he hard carries. He still ends up in the same rank as you, because on average he's just a shot good.

It is a 5v5 game AND it is treated as such. The difference is that it simply takes MORE games to determine your actual rank. If you're CONSISTENTLY better than your opponent, you climb (not as fast as chess obviously)

Starcraft243ver1 votes

It doesnt really matter. Threat them as random dice rolls.

Over a good number of games, it will even out.

Let's say we are all dices.

  • You are a consistent player, and you are better than your current mmr : the dice representing you will always be a 4,5 or a 6.
  • You ally and opponents can roll from 1 to 6.
  • The team with the larger score wins

https://i.imgur.com/GMg7fx1.png

Here we are, you will not win everything, but you will definitely climb. (I used the RAND(min, max) function of excel over 100 games, min and max player are the values for your dice rolls, min other and max other are the min and max values for the other players, in case of ex-aequo, I randomly give the win to one or the other team).

Now lets say you are a living god, you can't score anything but 6: https://i.imgur.com/blpMHP6.png

If you are just a non feeder/non afker, let's say you can't roll a 1 : https://i.imgur.com/7pmNkVd.png

You see ? The only dice you can cheat on is yours, and it's good enough to climb. Not good enough to win every game, but hopefully climing doesnt require this.

Yes, but as I stated in a comment above, this is my own personal problem with the game and should not deter others from playing ranked. I like to win games based on my own performance alone (i.e if I play better than my opponent, I win), which defines Chess but does not define League.

The top Elo players also have less than 70 games per season in ranked, because if they continue to play, those rates drop closer to 50%. They know 2 things:

Placements are half the battle. Winning them puts your MMR at a place where you can skip ranks, resulting in fewer games.

The more games you play on an account, the worse your MMR will get, because MMR rates based off a mean performance of your games compared to the players you're playing with, so even if you and your opponents are both 70% winners, the result to an MMR win will drop from 200/game at low game counts to about 10/game from high game counts. BUT. You still lose 30-100 MMR when you LOSE a game, so even if you are a 70% player, the more games you play, the lower your MMR will go, and the more frequent you get placed with players who are not 70% winners, but rather 60% players, and those players begin to affect your 70%, and drop you down to 65%, and as you begin to lose more, your MMR will get you closer to playing with 50% players.

And that's when you begin to tank, dropping a Diamond or Plat player down to Gold (Most players generally agree that Gold is now a cesspool of 50% players, same as silver/bronze now, which results in harsh MMR losses).

I built this account about a month ago. I placed Gold V with an MMR that was rating Gold I. I got up to Plat IV MMR by the time I was promoing for Gold IV.

Then, Eve came out. I decided to Norm her for a few games, and got to where I was pulling about a 10/4/9 kda, and thought I could bring her into ranked.

Well.... in my first 10 games with her, my scores were fine. However, I got a Challenger level Zed smurfing 1 game who just destroyed the game, and a Diamond I Jarvan/Xin Duo invading and co-owning my entire jungle from level 2 while my on team did nothing to address the situation. Game after game, I got someone who was either smurfing, or a game with 3 people in Placements (new accounts, with 2-3 ranked games).... people who didn't belong in my elo. I discovered very quickly that the new Eve doesn't really have a versatile kit, and when her team is failing, she has very little command over doing things like split pushing or protecting a 5 man push of a lane, or even keeping the other team ungrouped, even if she pulls a 4-5 KDA game.

By the time I learned this, My Plat IV MMR dropped in about 18 games clear down to Silver III, because every loss chunked me off 200+ MMR, but every win was only giving me 80-90.

So, I went back to playing my mains, and was pulling wins 12 out of 13 games.

But... my crashed MMR just refused to move. In 2 ranks with about 24 wins and only 4 losses, My MMR only recovered from about 1340 to a wopping 1440. I actually saw my MMR from a 3 win streak get absolutely cancelled out and negative from ONE loss.

What's worse is, when I hit Gold V and Silver 1 o LP, I didn't even have a safety barrier, The MMR loss was so great, that 1 loss at 0 or 8 LP dropped me a bracket, so not only did I have to battle the "50%," I also had to battle the 2-3 wins for a series.

The game is designed to punish you for playing a lot of games. It's designed to reward you for playing a few good games.

Most high elo people get their ranks, and keep them by playing 1 game a week, and then going back to norms or playing smurf accounts.

Thats a total bullshit. Everyone knows Riot is forcing 50 % winrate. Any decent company would make ranked so you only play vs people with the same rank against the same rank. Silver II vs Silver II, Bronze IV vs Bronze IV, Platinum III vs Platinum III teams and so on.

How can you explain the extreme cases where you are having a 10 game winstreak then suddenly you got 10 loose streak?

Answer is simple. Riot is giving you unbalanced games so you loose a lot to get back to 50 %.

Not to mention the cancer promo system where you are getting even more retards.(trolls, feeders, afkers)

Morally superior3 votes

That's not true though. If you go on a long winning streak your mmr skyrockets... so it only makes sence you'll lose a few games afterwards because it was so inflated.

Just imagine how bad smurfs would be. If a diamond smurf got placed in a low tier (say silver) he'd shitstomp those players for so long- it would take quite a bit of games to get that account to diamond. Right now he's be placed against other smurfs up until the account gets similar mmr as his main. It would be unbearable to play in those lower tiers simply because the smurfs would ruin everything.

If you can't climb it's not just your team. It's you. Only you are the constant factor in your games. Everyone else has the same chance of getting bad teams, trolls, flamers etc.

Before you spout this crap think about the consequences please.

OP Garen Support3 votes

I have been playing since season 4. Played roughly 4-5K games. Most of the ranked time I was the 1 who was fed and won lane. Meanwhile my team wants to stop world hunger. I am always the 1 who needs to carry. 9 out of 10 games If I do bad we loose. Only that 1 game might have a decent enough team to not only rely on me.

For 2 seasons straight I reached platinum. Horrible experience overall. Only after reaching Gold I I noticed that my team is not full of idiots and actually got carried myself 30 % of the time. Until then feeders everywhere.

I cant climb higher then platinum because Im not that good in the game and I no longer have much free time to practice.

Spouting nonsense? Opinion formed out of 4K games experience. So yes it is a fact from my perspective maybe you are the bad player who is always getting carried. Maybe you are lucky. Maybe you are so damn talented that you are already a Challanger.

Bârd6 votes

Forcing a 50% win rate... do you understand basic statistics?

The average win rate is 50%. The more games you play, the closer you will get to that number. Winstreaks will generally be cancelled out by losing streaks.

If your rank is stagnant, it's because you aren't good enough to play at the next level. Don't blame Riot for your own inadequacies.

kargish10 votes

You telling us this? When I played my diamond 1 games I got matched with platinum people, and I was matched against diamond 3-1 people, and guess what those plat players got absolutely shit on. I have even been matched with a silver 1 player, and at that point I just gave up on trying to understand the system.

You're telling us that I need to be good enough to reach the next tier (master at the time), but that's false as I also have to be good enough to carry lower ranked players than myself. I don't know about you, but last time I checked the requirements for entering master league wasn't "be able to carry silver-plat players against diamond teams."

OP Garen Support2 votes

The system is not about beating stronger or same skill level opponents but carrying the trash who does everything to loose the game.

Only real fun I have in the game when Im up to stronger opponents 1 vs 1 and can learn something new from them. I dont learn anything from my team feeding intentionally. (yes 0 5 0 in 5 minutes is intentional feeding)

Diamond rank ranked same problem as low elo. 1 gold player cant carry 4 low silvers vs full gold team.

Starcraft243ver3 votes

No. Because MMR is a 0 sum system whereas LPs is a progression system designed to give you the illusion you are climbing and thus it's not a 0 sum system.

MMR was there before there were any leagues and ranks. They added it because it's fancier to say "i'm diamond 3" rather than "i'm MMR 2200". Mainly because it's a game for kids/teenagers.

I can trick the ranking system by leaving promos lobby to stay bronze 5 forever. Even though I have a diamond mmr. I can't trick the mmr system, and that's why the mmr, even tough it's hidden, is prevalent.

The background MMR system combined with a league system is straight up retarded. The league system is a sham, because if the MMR is the matchmaking factor then division, in theory, don't matter.

They need to switch the system and drop the background MMR and focus on matchmaking based on league

I peaked at like 1780 MMR this season. Started in June or July at S4-5 and made it all the way to G2.

I did not have a 50% win rate in the beginning but I eventually worked my ass off solo queue and broke 50% with about a 11 or 12 game net of wins. Then I decided I was ready to grind for plat... Boy was I wrong..

I'd say 25 of my last 35 ranked games were disasters. Put in teams with AFKers, trolls, and just garbage players. Literally nothing I could do to win in any single game. I got frustrated, I flamed teammates and I got a chat restriction from Riot which killed my confidence more. I came to the conclusion that I am a loser and that this ranked system is garbage, and the system that gauge player skill are also garbage. I'm currently sitting at G5 and 0 LP and am so nervous to play another ranked game because as soon as I get into champ select menu I already know its going to be a loss. By the grace of the gods, could I get on a decent team and win ONE game.

I'm winning maybe 20% of my ranked games now, my MMR is tanked and I'm in teams with supports who don't buy sighstones until 17mins, and top laner Illaois with death fire touch mastery stones feeding 8 kills in 3 minutes and just won't stop fighting and dying to a Urgot who eventually became a 21/2 monster.

So yah... I'm done with ranked this season. I'm playing normals, I am wining games and having fun. I have not had any fun in this damn game in ranked for weeks now.

I guess as soon as rewards are announced the losers with no lives come out to destroy everyones games. That's the only thing I can think off, I honestly never had this many losses in my entire league experience.

I feel your pain. My suggestion is to quit playing ranked while your ahead and take a break.

This is good advice. The way the garbage matchmaking system works now is just too insufferable and frustrating.

I don't care what Riot says... if you are constantly winning lane against opponents 1-2 leagues higher than you, but cant rank up because Riot keeps matching you with feeders... that is a recipe for toxicity. Justified toxicity.

I honestly have no clue what Riot was thinking with this 5v5 ELO and MMR system. They expect players to grind though 300+ games to eventually get to their skill level... but I'll be damned if I sit through 10 games with how terrible the matchmaking is. I don't mind losing competitive games. My complaint is that the games ARENT EVEN CLOSE. I wouldn't mind grinding through losses if the games were winnable. These aren't winnable games though. Meaning it is just a waste of time.

What is that stat players/riot pulled out of their ass? 60% of all games are "winnable"? Essentially admitting that 40% of the games aren't even worth playing. In what other competitive event would participants willingly subject themselves to a system where 4/10 games were literally automatic losses?

This happened to me last month. Won 7 games in a row in Silver against Silvers and then lost 3 games in a row against Plats (I'm mid-Silver). All the wins were stomps and all the losses were stomps on the enemy's side.

If Riot insists on trying to keeping people at a 50% winrate then I'd rather win 50% of my games where the teams are even than win 50% stomps on my end and lose 50% as stomps from the enemy team.

  1. Win 10 low elo games in a row
  2. Elo goes up because you are winning so easily and need to be matched with more skilled players
  3. You start playing with people your skill level
  4. Turns out you are actually not that good as an individual and/or team player
  5. You go on a 10 loss streak as your elo corrects itself
  6. Your elo is back to normal because your previous 10 win streak was a fluke which you could not continue.
  7. Complain about life on a forum
  8. Realise that league is a team game and while you may do your part as an individual you are not good enough to carry a team at your skill level
  9. git gud

I myself am at step 4 right now. I went from Bronze 1 to Gold 2 (peaked at Plat V elo) this month after taking a 3-4 year break from league. Now that my Ardent Censer handicap got nerfed, I can't just run around and press W on Sona anymore. So I am finding that everyone I play with is better than me, and I expect to drop in rank and elo because I can't keep up. I am going to skip steps 5-7 and relearn all the supports in norms for next season.

plat 4 games are a LOT easier than plat 1 games, if you're going back down there regularly and still lose, you lack consistency.. Since season 4 started I've never dropped more than 1 rank before going back up, and I'm a terribly inconsistent player. I make a conscious effort to only play ranked when I know I'm in top shape, perhaps you should consider some introspection, and only play when you are at a plat 1 level and not plat 5

You're really salty about not being able to make it to gold 5, arent you ?

It just means you deserve your current rank

If you are really higher elo material then you can 1v9 at low elo on auto pilot. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Yeah, because is normal no ?! that the only way for example to climb to gold from silver is to be diamond level

This is not how it should be. If someone is to get to gold from silver, needs to be no more than gold level.

I just wish ranked felt like i was losing due to stronger opponets not due to shittier temates.

In all honesty ranked in its current state is a psycological shit hole version of a 50/50 coin flip. And all it will do is turn you into an asshole and make you hate this game.

I actually agree, and have been saying this. If I am in silver 2 (which I am) I should only be placed with players who are silver 2 (if at all possible) I should not be playing vs or with golds and plat players ever. (no its not often I see a plat in my ranked game but it does happen) you ranking should be the mesurement of your skill not the invisable mmr. that way if you get 20 LP for win and 20 for loss then when you hit a 50% win rate that is where you stay. Imho it would result in faster and more satifactory placements.

You're forgetting that matchmaking matches you based on your MMR, not on your rank. And that MMR is the main metric of skill, whereas rank is not.
