Preranked Matchmaking
I have been playing League of Legends for about a year and a half, almost two years now. For the longest time I really only cared to play it with my friends, and they typically only wanted to play bot games. Their reasoning is because PVP is really just too frustrating and players tend to be toxic. For the most part, I can absolutely see why they feel that way. Bot games are fun, easy, and can just be something to play around with. However, the difficulty is nowhere near where it really should be to prepare players for PVP. I think that is something Riot should really look into, but that is a different topic.
This post is about Preranked matches. I have recently decided that I want to finally get into PVP, and I have played the weekend rotating game modes, a few normals, and what-not. I don't know that I would consider it to be more fun, but it is much more of a challenge because of that huge skill gap I mentioned before. Finally, over the last month or so I decided to try my hand at a ranked match. So far I am 5 ranked matches in, and I was wondering how long it would take to attain an actual rank. That isn't the question, I looked it up and the answer is, I believe, 10 matches (woohoo half way).
My question is, during this time, how is matchmaking determined? Is it just the first 10 unranked players to cue up, or is there any sort of matchmaking criteria. My thought is that the game would at least look at something like account life, activity, level, games played (including bot games), .. and so on. That is actually what worries me. I have played A LOT of bot games. If someone has played even half as many PVP games as the amount of bot games I have played, they will most likely be way better than me.
To a point though, I am hoping that is the way it is determined. If I am now being matched up with players who are better than me, I won't feel so bad when I lose (although I have 3 wins and 2 losses because I have been getting carried) because then when I finally get ranked, I should be among players closer to my skill level.
