Lp gains and losses

So, I'm kind of wondering.

Ever since I hit Platinum I, I've been receiving a little bit less LP gain and a LOT more LP loss. From around +25 per win and -18 per loss, I was getting +18 -21.

I thought it was the bottleneck of Platinum I, because that's how the system works - once you get high in a league, it bottlenecks you.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I hit diamond very recently, HAPPY AS HELL to be out of the bottleneck as it drived me crazy!

Only to find out it got worse.

Ever since I hit Diamond V, my LP gains have been 10-12 and my losses are -30. I have absolutely no idea what to do in order to fix this, as my win/loss ratio is positive in ranked, and it always has been. In diamond alone, I have a positive winrate, but am struggling to get above 20-30 LP because of the ridiculous LP loss I'm getting.

Can anyone give me a reason as to why I'm getting such horrible LP gains and losses, and a way to fix it?

I'll try to do anything in order to climb to the top.

Thanks in advance, Spinning Axes.

It gets harder and harder to climb the less lp I gain - and yeah, I have had a little trouble winning recently, 17/40 is still a decent ~47% winrate, which shouldn't warrant such negative lp gains.

From another thread:

Low Diamond is a mess atm. They're letting the top ~2% of the playerbase hit Diamond when only ~0.6% has a high enough MMR to actually climb. So you end up with ~75% of the Diamond population stuck in Division V with negative LP gains.

The gap between Diamond and Master is gigantic.

You are good enough to be Diamond, but not good enough to be higher than Diamond V.

The fact that I had such positive LP gains in Plat II and it suddenly took a nosedive is what confuses me. With the positive LP gains I was getting, I thought my MMR was mid diamond, but ever since Plat I it's just plummeted.

I would have thought that instead of me getting 8 LP for every win and loss until the point of where my mmr is, it should be me getting 8 LP if I was Gold II, and the LP gains would be less and less for each win / loss the closer I got to my mmr.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just feel as though that somehow, somewhere, my mmr got completely messed up.

To put it into numbers, using OP.GG's MMR estimation service:

Plat V is around 1750MMR. New Diamond V players are around 2000MMR. Diamond IV is over 2200MMR. Master is around 2500+ possibly even 2600+.

In short, you need to at the very least grind the equivalent of Plat to Diamond before seeing normal LP gains. Honestly, the actual MMR requirements are not well known.

Your situation is not uncommon, it happens to all Diamond players that were not at least Diamond II+ last season.

Thanks for the helpful information.

If I were to gain enough MMR to start climbing with normal LP gains, would it immediately become balanced again?

Let me rephrase that.

If I were to hit 2200 MMR, would I be getting normal LP gains immediately? Or will it gradually become more normal the closer I get to 2200?

Based on the quick deterioration of my LP gains in Plat II, I would expect that it would not improve gradually, just immediately.

Each division has its own MMR requirement. As you remain in the same division, you should see your LP gains improve as your MMR increases. But there's no guarantee that it'll be good enough to have neutral LP gains in the next division.

There's so few people in Diamond IV+ that if the MMR requirements are the average MMR of all players in a select division, the ratings are probably really inflated. But we don't have enough data to confirm that.

Discouraged yet?

I've been losing more than I've been gaining for the last 3 months, ever since ~mid lp Plat II. The fact that I'm still climbing with losing more than I'm gaining should be a signal that this is not the right solution.

The system sucks this season to say the least.. every1 just says your MMR is lower than your rank. =] so idk take it for wucha will

I always like to think that the ranking system is a completely fair way of determining the skill of a player in League of Legends. Those saying that "elo hell exists" or "rank system doesn't determine skill" are just people who aren't willing to put the time and effort into getting a high rank. While there might be a few outliers, most of which are just people who don't play ranked, for the most part the ranked system is quite a fair system, and I don't see a reason for Riot to purposely change it to something worse than it was previously.
