Questions About Support Main

I've been thinking that I need to choose a main so I can get better. Until now I've always just filled, so I have experience with all roles. However, I mostly played support during that time so I'm thinking I might go support main with mid as my second pick. But my question goes to support mains. During ranked or any competitive match, is it possible for a support to "carry" a game? My problem is I can't feed my carry when facing any decent bot lane. When playing normals I do really well, my carry was 21/1 last match and i was 2/2/26. But when I go to ranked or draft I face people who constantly avoid my thresh hook, who poke me and my carry down a lot, and who make my Alistar support useless. Also, for example, do you think a diamond support could go into a silver match and get his carry fed no matter what, or is avoiding supports in bot lane just easy? You have a lane consisting of two people, who's jobs are just to protect each other, I find it easy to survive in bot lane compared to other lanes.

I've been a bot lane main (playing both roles) since about s2, so in my opinion, yes, you can definitely carry as a support.

That said, it is 100% situational. Try and determine early on (you generally know in the first 5 minutes) if you can bully your adc into getting kills. I've had tons of games where I am just shouting at this random adc because I've hooked/grabbed/stunned/exhausted/dropped someone to less than 100 hp and the carry DOES NOTHING. If they are afk farmers, that will be what they do, end of story. Your best bet at that point is to just do your best to let them get their farm, so you can get the enemy tower and roam. Then, find the playmaker on your team (maybe a very vicious top laner/midlaner who has been giving their all to get kills) and go and be their support until your adc emerges from their farmfest, ready to begin killing things.

If you want to take matters into your own hands to get kills and eventually carry, try taking Annie/Brand/Zyra bot lane. They take relatively little to get going, and can function with a supports budget.

I've never thought of it like that. When I play thresh and my adc doesnt at least poke on my hooks I'm like dang they suck (I dont say it in chat, just think it lol) I just always try to play aggressive because I had never thought about trying to feed someone else rather than the adc

I'm a support main. It doesn't happen often, but yes a support can carry. It really depends on who though and your definition of carry.

If you are talking strictly getting kills and getting fed and winning that way, it doesn't happen often.

If you are talking about being really good at supporting then it happens more. I"m talking about really assisting your team, saving your team, securing kills and objectives, etc.

I've had games where I've completely melted people as Sona (after your supp stuff build Luden's + Lichbane hehe) and got fed. Other games as Nami I've gotten 40+ assists and an S rank for really helping my team and saving their butts while also getting them kills and winning teamfights with my cc and heals.

You can always to non traditional supports too, like taking a midlaner down bot, but this is a bit harder. You can get a kill or two but don't take them all from your adc. They really need some too.

Depends on what kind of things you are more comfortable with.

If you're a leader/engage/opportunistic playstyle kind of person, then tanky things like Thresh/Alistar/Blitz are for you. If you're more of a defender person, and fares better at turning fights around, then things like Janna/Raka/Taric are for you. If you're just too impatient and want instant, flashy results, go play mages like Annie/Zyra/Morgana.

I usually suggest to stay away from Jacks-of-all-trades (Lulu and Nami), things that require a specific matchup to excel (Sona), or things that require a very high skillfloor (Bard) especially if you have no idea on what you're doing.

Supports can't really carry on their own; that's pretty the point of supports: you HELP people carry. Some champs are more effective at "solo carrying" allies, some require heavy teammate participation to even perform her basic functions. Sometimes even the best and smartest support mains can't win lanes because their allies just couldn't cooperate.

Whoops, a brain dump, but I think I covered enough.

While a true support really won't carry. There are ways around it.

I would recommend a mage support. They have enough CC and Utility to fulfill the needs of a support, But allows you to take over lane if one of your party members screws up, and transitioning yourself into an APC.
