Doesn't this dynamic seem... wrong? Why are you encouraged to buy an ARMOR item against a magic assassin? Why is the AP/MR item so bad against magic assassins?

because little mr isn't gonna save you early game. you need hp as well. but you will most liekly still die in a 1v1 unless your a tank.

It's not that it's bad it's just that zhonyas is always going to be stronger than resist. Outright negating damage is going to beat out reducing it every time.

I even prefer rushing zhonya (in a bad matchup) vs champs like lux and syndra.

Its just really funny when the lux snares you, tries to combo you with E R pop, but you're just like invulnerable.

Same with syndra R.

Abyssal isnt bad against him, it stops him from oneshotting you which is pretty much all he does. Its just that Zhonyas is even better against him. But before Zhonyas you still want a item 1057 because that item is broken lol.

Common mid lane knowledge. If you want to dodge an ability or nullify it, you get zhonya's or exhaust.

but no, this isn't a universal rule, some champs want zhonyas others want abyssal.

As a general rule of thumb, if you are moble or have some way to defend against fizz you probably want to just get abyssal. If you are a squishy helpless champ with nobody to protect you than tough shit, get that zhonyas.

BUT

don't be that idiot that gets abyssal and forgets to get hp to go with it.

in this particular case they can, but you should still get hp because if you get cc'd or are kited you aren't going to get much shield unless you go mostly glass thus defeating the purpose. Though if its against something like fizz abyssal would work fine but you'll want to just kill fizz instead of trying to evade him like you would with zhonyas

Abyssal is great against AP Assassins, but completely nullifying his ult with the press of a single button is equally, if not more, powerful.

Fizz is the only AP assassin who you'll want Zhonya's over an MR item while playing against, and it's because his ulti has such a strong presence but it's only very telegraphed so that even morons like myself can Zhonya's it.

Seriously though if you see a Fizz land an R on you, immediately throw out your debilitating CC at him, and then Zhonya's. I can guarantee you will bait his ulti as well as his trollpole and you'll juke 70% of his damage.
